Undergraduate Accounting Programmes In Developing Countries: The Case Of Iran, Jamal Roudaki Jan 1996

Undergraduate Accounting Programmes In Developing Countries: The Case Of Iran, Jamal Roudaki

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

After the Islamic Revolution in Iran (1979), the entire education system in the country was drastically changed to make it more relevant to the Islamic philosophy. Accordingly, since the beginning of 1982 the undergraduate accounting programmes of all universities and other higher education institutions have been conducted on the basis of a centrally designed common curriculum. From the inception, however, there has been criticism that several features of this new accounting curriculum are not appropriate in terms of the educational objectives and the socio-economic conditions of the country.

This study examined the nature and content of the above accounting curriculum …

Asymmetric Synthesis Of Proline Derivatives, Abdollah Javidan Jan 1996

Asymmetric Synthesis Of Proline Derivatives, Abdollah Javidan

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This thesis describes three new approaches to the asymmetric synthesis of chiral proline derivatives from (R) and (S)-tert-butyl-3-benzoyl-4-methylene-2-oxazolidin-5-one. In the first Chapter, some important aspects of proline derivatives, specially the strategies used for the synthesis of these compounds was presented. It was found that for the preparation of proline derivatives in high enantiomeric purity, starting materials with a chiral auxiliary have generally been employed.

In Chapter Two, the Michael addition reactions of the pyrrolidine enamines (223- 225) to (S)-2-tert-butyl-3-benzoyl-4-methylene-oxazolidin-5-one (222) and its enantiomer, (R)-(222), to give Michael addition adducts of the type …

Catchment Rainfall-Runoff Computer Modelling, Forood Sharifi Jan 1996

Catchment Rainfall-Runoff Computer Modelling, Forood Sharifi

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Rapid population growth has caused an increasing demand for water in both agricultural and industrial sectors. With wastage of water, deterioration of water sources through pollution and the impact of humans on the water cycle, further water shortages are expected. An increasing demand for water dictates the necessity for on-going research into the assessment and modelling of surface and subsurface water resources. As water resources have become scarcer, the trend in water resources development has shifted from large to small catchments, many of which are ungauged.

In water resources design a long record of runoff is desirable, but this is …

Application Of Rock Mass Characterisation To Slope Stability Problems, Gholam Reza Khanlari Jan 1996

Application Of Rock Mass Characterisation To Slope Stability Problems, Gholam Reza Khanlari

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The stability of hard rock slopes is a critical problem in surface mining and is governed by the presence of geological structures such as, joints, fractures, faults, shear zones and bedding planes along which failure may occur. The accurate prediction of the behaviour of intact rock and rock masses is of the utmost importance for stability analysis of surface mining excavations and also for safer mining operations. The engineering judgment of the relationship between geological parameters and physical and mechanical properties of intact rock and also rock mass discontinuities in conjunction with the slope stability analysis, requires knowledge of engineering …

Access Control In Object-Oriented Databases, Ahmad Baraani-Dastjerdi Jan 1996

Access Control In Object-Oriented Databases, Ahmad Baraani-Dastjerdi

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

In a multi-user environment with a large shared database, it is necessary that the security of data in the database is considered. To enforce security of data in a database, we start with an access control model. The model defines which users have what privileges to which information. There are three different types of access control policies: discretionary access control (DAC), mandatory access control (MAC), and role-based access control (RBAC). A discretionary access control specifies users' privileges to different system resources, including their ability to transfer their privileges to other users. In a mandatory access control, the access of data …

Odysseus Unbound And Penelope Unstable: Contemporary Australian Expatriate Women Writers, Karen Ruth Brooks Jan 1996

Odysseus Unbound And Penelope Unstable: Contemporary Australian Expatriate Women Writers, Karen Ruth Brooks

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

By examining the selected fiction of three prominent expatriate Australian women writers: Shirley Hazzard, Charmian Clift, and Glenda Adams, I analyse the expatriate experience generally, and advance a particular pattern of representation common to these writers. Their work evokes the liminality and ambivalence of the expatriate and "rewrites" the Homeric legend by giving an active and mobile prominence to Penelope figures. In exploring the psychological and physical dilemmas expatriation entails, they all disrupt generic literary forms (quest, romance, travelogue) and call into question systems of meaning from cultural conventions to language itself.

Expatriate fiction juxtaposes dynamism and stasis. The expatriate …

Libraries In An Information Society: Online Databases And Access To Information, Carole Alcock Jan 1996

Libraries In An Information Society: Online Databases And Access To Information, Carole Alcock

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

During the past fifteen years, library technology has been transformed. Where paper based technologies once ruled, computers n o w provide the major form of access to information resources both within and without the library walls. Once bastions of print, libraries now actively promote electronic information tools, whether simply via online catalogues or through the more sophisticated CD-ROMs or international networks. Not only are the hardcopy indexing and abstracting services being displaced by electronic services, but, increasingly, librarians will be able to choose whether they subscribe to an expensive journal, or provide access to it via the equivalent fulltext database …

Organisational Values And Styles Of Decision-Making Process: A Comparative Study Of Chinese And Australian Managers, Yuan Wang

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This study explores the relationship between Styles of the Decision Making Process (SDMP) and organisational values. During the past decade the relationship between decision making and organisational values has attracted academic attention. However, most of this kind of research focuses on h o w values influence the decision making content. The impact of organisational values on S D M P has been largely ignored. Selecting and controlling SDMP is a key of management success. SDMP involves the roles of participation as well as cognitive style that play in the decision making process. Organisational process-oriented values (OPV) act as the major …

Integrable Nonlinear Evolution Equations Applied To Solidification And Surface Redistribution, Peter Tritscher Jan 1996

Integrable Nonlinear Evolution Equations Applied To Solidification And Surface Redistribution, Peter Tritscher

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Members of a hierarchy of integrable nonlinear evolution equations are applied problem in solidification and various problems in surface redistribution of crystalline materials.

The members of the hierarchy are related to the well known linearizable diffusion equation which has the diffusivity form as the reciprocal of the square of concentration. We find that any linear combination of members of the hierarchy linearizable and the evolution equations formed represent a rotation of the diffusion potential modelled by the linear equation.

The base member of the hierarchy is employed to obtain an analytic solution describing the temperature distribution and position of any …

Treatment Planning For Boron Neutron Capture Therapy For Cancer, Steven A. Wallace Jan 1996

Treatment Planning For Boron Neutron Capture Therapy For Cancer, Steven A. Wallace

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Over the past 40 years, tremendous advances in science and technology have been reflected in the techniques for diagnosis and therapy of cancer.

With such an enormous use of resources, we should realistically expect a reduction in incidence and mortality rates. While this is true for some types of cancers, the same cannot be said for the overall profile of mortality due to cancer. Indeed an increase in incidence and mortality from primary brain cancer in the elderly has been reported in the U S A and Europe. Clearly what must be recognised is that a significant shift in the …

Mastery Through Psychotherapy, Brin Grenyer Jan 1996

Mastery Through Psychotherapy, Brin Grenyer

Relationship Between Total Suspended Particulates And Particulate Matter Of 10 Microns, Partha Kumar Gupta

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The greatest challenge for the industries, now days, is to provide products and services that provide a very high standard of living without degrading the environment. The role of an engineer has changed drastically over the years, since, he/she has not only to provide the existing living standards but also has to upgrade the standards, without harming the quality of the environment. In the past, scientists and engineers were oriented towards the concepts of industrial growth and expansion, increased efficiency in production and exploitation of resources. This gave very littie room for concern about the long range effects of the …

Where required the CRM can insert intermediate QoS control and monitoring modules into the information flow to match application requirements, workstation capabilities, and media formats. …

The Development And Validation Of Conjugate Imaging Techniques In The Automated Reproduction Of Three Dimensional Coordinates From Multiple Camera Images, Allan B. Carman Jan 1996

The Development And Validation Of Conjugate Imaging Techniques In The Automated Reproduction Of Three Dimensional Coordinates From Multiple Camera Images, Allan B. Carman

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The dimensional quantitative analysis of human motion requires the reproduction of three dimensional coordinates from multiple camera images. In current photogrammetric systems the ability to identify and track individual camera image points imposes limitations on the accuracy and complexity of human motion analysis. Current photogrammetric systems are limited by the number of cameras, three dimensional segments, markers per segment, and the complexity of movement possible due to the increased difficulty and time required to reproduce three dimensional coordinates. The automated reconstruction and tracking of three dimensional coordinates may overcome these limitations by removing the necessity to track and identify two …

This study examined consumer perceptions of services for people with severe and profound intellectual disabilities in the Illawarra area. The nature and severity of the disability involved necessitated the use of family members, staff and advocates as sources of information. A total of 147 clients participated and a representative of each client (with one exception) was interviewed. They were asked to identify all services used by the client in the previous five years and to rate their level of satisfaction with these services on a 7-point Likert scale. They were then asked to identify factors important to them in rating …

Optical And Radio Observations Of Young Stellar Objects, Stacy L. Mader Jan 1996

Optical And Radio Observations Of Young Stellar Objects, Stacy L. Mader

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

An exciting area of research in star formation is tlie study of outflows driven by mass loss from Young Stellar Objects (YSOs). This mass loss can be as much as 10"^ MQ yr 1 with wind velocities of the order 300 km s'^. The nature of the wind that drives this Tnass loss is still uncertain. Evidence that a YSO is undergoing mass loss is provided through the effect the stellar wind has on the surrounding medium. Phenomena such as bipolar molecular outflows, masers and the Herbig-Haro (HH) objects are all indicators of a YSO undergoing mass loss. Visible observations …

War And Community: The Red Cross In Camden, 1939-1945, Ian Colin Willis Jan 1996

War And Community: The Red Cross In Camden, 1939-1945, Ian Colin Willis

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Voluntary organisations like the Red Cross were an integral part of the life of a small town like Camden during wartime. They played a very important role in the consciousness of the local community. They helped focus and galvanise the local population into support for the war effort. The Red Cross was the most successful example of an imperially-based, philanthropic, voluntary organisation that was active in Australia between 1914 and 1945. It had an international network that fitted the imperial profile, its aims were war-related and it was most active between 1914-18 and 1939-45. It had extensive kinship and interpersonal …

Investigations Into Single-Slug Dense-Phase Pneumatic Conveying, Gang Xie Jan 1996

Investigations Into Single-Slug Dense-Phase Pneumatic Conveying, Gang Xie

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

After reviewing existing theories in detail, the author has found a serious error in a popular model for the prediction of pressure drop in single-slug dense-phase pneumatic flow. The purpose of this study is to analyse the mechanism of slug flow and develop a new method for determining pressure drop accurately, so that commercially used densephase pneumatic conveying systems can be designed by theory. The present study lays the foundation for modem dense-phase pneumatic conveying design. Subsequent investigators and prospective users of the system will benefit from this work mainly in three aspects: (1) a better knowledge about the conveying …

Accounting Implications In Social Welfare Payments: A Foucauldian Analysis, Ratnam Alagiah Jan 1996

Accounting Implications In Social Welfare Payments: A Foucauldian Analysis, Ratnam Alagiah

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Here is a history of our times written on an unfamiliar theme. It is a study that uses Foucault's archaeology and genealogy, as method in history, to explain three central themes. It seeks to explicate, firstly, the relationship between accounting knowledge and power. Secondly, it seeks to show how human beings create an object in accounting knowledge and how they later become its subject. Finally this study seeks to demonstrate that a human science such as accounting is instrumental in social control. Income, the alpha and omega of accounting, is discoursed and constructed, making up accounting knowledge. The archaeology of …

Distribution Of Mechanical Energy Fractions During Maximal Ergometer Rowing, Richard M. Smith Jan 1996

Distribution Of Mechanical Energy Fractions During Maximal Ergometer Rowing, Richard M. Smith

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The assessment of mechanical energy expenditure (MEE) during human movement is an essential step in the determination of the proficiency of the movement. Dynamics methods of estimating MEE have their derivation in the sources of MEE , the joint forces and moments, and are less arbitrary about the rules governing energy compensation when compared with instantaneous segment energy methods. Further, dynamics methods enable the exercise scientist to attribute energy costs and savings to particular body segments, sources and mechanisms. This thesis describes the application of a dynamics method (Aleshinsky, 1986a-e) to the mechanical energy analysis of maximal ergometer rowing.

Nikolai Aleksandrovich Rozhkov (1868-1927) was a wellknown and Influential Russian historian and political activist. He was held in great respect by his teachers, colleagues and students and was regarded by some as the most gifted disciple of Kliuchevskii, the greatest of all Russian historians. Kliuchevskii held Rozhkov in higher esteem than he did Mikhail Nikolaevich Pokrovskii, who eventually became the leading historian of the early Soviet period. Despite such accolades, no major work has been written on Rozhkov either in the Soviet Union or in the West. An assessment of his historical writings and of his political activities is long …

The Effect Of Colour On Transient System Activity, As Indexed Four Different Psychophysical Measures, Kristen Pammer Jan 1996

The Effect Of Colour On Transient System Activity, As Indexed Four Different Psychophysical Measures, Kristen Pammer

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The strongest differentiation between the transient (magnocellular) and sustained (parvocellular) visual pathways, is in terms of colour processing, with the transient system generally considered to be colour insensitive. This distinction is obvious in both the anatomy and physiology of the visual system (e.g., Wiesel & Hubel 1966; Gouras 1968; De Valois, Abramov & Jacobs 1966; Schiller & Malpeli 1977). Both physiological (e.g., Wiesel & Hubel 1966; Derrington, Krauskopf & Lennie 1984) and psychophysical evidence (e.g., Williams, Breitmeyer, Lovegrove & Gutierrez 1991) has suggested that transient cells may be suppressed by diffuse red light. The possible effect of blue light is, …
