The Dark Is Not My Enemy: The Personal Essay As A Form To Explore Trauma And Memory, Raistlyn Camphuysen
Undergraduate Honors Theses
The Dark Is Not My Enemy is a collection of personal essays exploring the connection between trauma and memory, as well as how different forms of the personal essay respond to the challenges of memory in the meaning-making process. This thesis includes three essays—a scenic flash essay, a lyric essay, and a memoir essay—and a critical introduction that explores the theories that inform the formal choices made in the essays and explains how these choices help confront, understand, and heal from sexual trauma.

Effects Of The Ketogenic Diet On Spatial Memory And Long-Term Potentiation In The Ca1 Region Of The Hippocampus In Young Rodents, Jed Christensen
Undergraduate Honors Theses
The ketogenic diet (KD) originated as a treatment for epilepsy nearly a century ago, though its neurological effects are not completely understood. In recent years the diet has resurged as a weight loss aid, reinvigorating research investigating its effects on the nervous system. Notably, the KD alters the concentration of glucose and ketones in the brain, and recent research suggests that the elevated ketone concentration, in the form of beta-hydroxybutyrate, induced by the diet enhances recognition memory and mitochondrial efficiency in the hippocampus. To further explore the effects of the KD, we examined its cognitive effects on spatial memory and …
Film And The Culture Of Memory In Argentina, Theresa Jo Thomas
Film And The Culture Of Memory In Argentina, Theresa Jo Thomas
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This project examines the culture of memory in modern-day Argentina in the context of the last civic-military dictatorship that took place between 1976 and 1983. Argentina is a country with a long history of filmmaking, a tradition that was suddenly interrupted during the long and dark seven years of military rule. Since the arrival of democracy in 1983, however, filmmakers have explored the trauma created by this period and have created a significant record of films that deal with loss, memory, and trauma. This thesis analyzes several films produced between the return of democratic rule and present-day Argentina in order …
The Atomic Bomb And The Birth Of Manga: Collective Memory In Post-Wwii Japan, Bethany Harris
The Atomic Bomb And The Birth Of Manga: Collective Memory In Post-Wwii Japan, Bethany Harris
Undergraduate Honors Theses
In the ashes of post-World War II Japan and among the widespread poverty and devastation, cheap entertainment in the form of manga flourished on an unprecedented level. Manga was used not only to reenact and process war trauma, but also as a tool that helped usher in a new era of pro-American democracy and science. Manga in support of Japan’s new image quickly became popularized and embraced by the public, such as Osamu Tezuka’s Astro Boy, but this was only one lens that captured Japanese memory of WWII. Keiji Nakazawa published the first documentary form of manga in his …
Formation Of Implicit Memories From A Narrative Played During Sleep, Amanat Ludhar
Formation Of Implicit Memories From A Narrative Played During Sleep, Amanat Ludhar
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Though, it was previously thought that the sleeping brain was dormant, research suggests that participants can process salient stimuli and form implicit memories of simple stimuli (e.g. words) during sleep. Thus, the current study aimed to determine whether participants could form implicit memories of a narrative played during sleep, and what role different sleep stages played in this memory formation. Participants were played a story while taking a nap, and EEG was used to track time spent in different sleep stages. Later, participants completed an implicit memory task where they were asked to differentiate between animal and non-animal words through …
Forgetting The Mine Wars: Erasing Insurrection In West Virginia History, Samuel Heywood
Forgetting The Mine Wars: Erasing Insurrection In West Virginia History, Samuel Heywood
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This thesis examines the concerted effort in the West Virginia school system to forget a massive labor movement in the early 20th century. Business leaders and government leaders turned to the classroom to try and control the memory of future generations to ensure a positive perception of the coal industry and avoid any more violent confrontations. After a brief summary of the Mine Wars for context, this thesis uses textbooks to analyze how the authors omitted the conflict and instead used patriotic propaganda to create loyal citizens. Although the Mine Wars have since been included in state history textbooks, …
The Reality Of Combat!: An Analysis Of Historical Memory In Broadcast Television, Kaleb Q. Wentz
The Reality Of Combat!: An Analysis Of Historical Memory In Broadcast Television, Kaleb Q. Wentz
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This thesis is an analysis of the World War II television drama COMBAT!, which ran from 1962 to 1967, and how this program dealt with and addressed the national memory of the Second World War. The way in which the “Good War” is remembered has changed over time. In the years of the conflict and immediately following its conclusion, there was a sense of zealous patriotism surrounding the war, but as our culture changed, a more critical approach was taken.
This paper examines the way in which the show deals with its two main subjects – the American forces …

Effects Of Classroom Design And Atmosphere Towards Affective Reactions And Memory Of Content, Brittney Bonnick
Undergraduate Honors Theses
The purpose of the present study was to investigate how a classroom’s design can alter an
individual’s memory of content and affective reactions towards the experience. 123 University of
Western Ontario Undergraduate students who were part of a first year psychology participation
pool listened to a video lecture on schizophrenia and then completed two paper and pencil
questionnaires. The first was a multiple-choice assessment of participant memory for lecture
material, and the second was a Likert scale on the perceived learning experience. The
atmosphere of the classroom as well as the design of the desk arrangements was changed for
