The Effect Of Changes In The Federal Funds Rate On Stock Markets: A Sector-Wise Analysis, Kunaey Garg Jan 2008

The Effect Of Changes In The Federal Funds Rate On Stock Markets: A Sector-Wise Analysis, Kunaey Garg

Undergraduate Economic Review

The federal funds rate is an indicator of monetary policy that investors in the stock market scrutinize very closely. This paper determines the relationship between changes in the federal funds rate and sector stock indexes. The paper goes on to determine why particular sectors are more sensitive to interest rate changes than others. Weekly returns of the Dow Jones ICB classified financial, energy, utilities, materials, industrials, consumer goods, consumer services, information technology, healthcare and telecommunications sectors are analyzed using separate OLS regression models for each sector. The results show that the utilities, financials, telecom and basic materials sectors are the …

Nafta Toward A Common Currency: An Economic Feasibility Study, Kelly Hugger Jan 2008

Nafta Toward A Common Currency: An Economic Feasibility Study, Kelly Hugger

Undergraduate Economic Review

The recent emergence of the Euro, combined with the completion of a decade of North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) has sparked interest in adopting a common currency for North America. This study examines the likelihood that Canada, Mexico, and the United States will adopt a common currency under fixed exchange rate regimes. The benefits and costs of a common currency are explored using the theory of optimum currency areas (OCA). Empirical research focuses on several variables including intra-regional and intra-industry trade, trade openness, gross domestic product, inflation rates, interest rates, economic growth rates, business cycle synchronization, factor mobility, fiscal …

Linking Depressed Earnings To Adolescent Depression, Emily Sands Jan 2008

Linking Depressed Earnings To Adolescent Depression, Emily Sands

Undergraduate Economic Review

In this study, I analyze empirically the ways in which adolescent depression depresses earnings in young adulthood. I test the prominent assertions that adolescent depression is predictive of young adult depression and of lower educational attainment, both of which are, in turn, predictive of lower earnings. I then expand upon the current literature by testing the assumption that those depressed in adolescence would benefit from staying in school. To that end, I first estimate the relationship between adolescent depression and returns to education. Since one relevant alternative to educational attainment is work experience, I then estimate the relationship between adolescent …

Analysis Of The Relationship Between Research Grants And Medical Patents: Are The Number Of Medical Patents Dependent On Nih And Nsf Funding, Jay H. Shah Jan 2008

Analysis Of The Relationship Between Research Grants And Medical Patents: Are The Number Of Medical Patents Dependent On Nih And Nsf Funding, Jay H. Shah

Undergraduate Economic Review

The United States invests more into basic medical research than any other country. This research, mostly done at medical schools, leads to medical technology patented by private firms through a phenomenon known as knowledge spillover. In light of this relationship, this thesis will investigate the relationship between the public investments in the basic medical research sector and the resulting effect on medical patents, contingent on geographic localization with state-level data. It is hypothesized that the larger the investments awarded to basic medical research organizations, the greater the number of medical patents within the state. Quantifying this relationship has important implications …

Induced Innovation In Non-Hydro Renewable Technologies: The Effects Of Energy Prices And Federal Spending, R. E. Taylor Iv Jan 2008

Induced Innovation In Non-Hydro Renewable Technologies: The Effects Of Energy Prices And Federal Spending, R. E. Taylor Iv

Undergraduate Economic Review

Our society’s reliance on fossil fuels has many negative results, including compromised national security and foreign relations as well as environmental damage. Many see technology as the key to an improved energy future, and in particular the development of new, cleaner renewable energy sources. The question then remains how to stimulate such technological innovation. In this study, I use U.S. patent data from 1970 to 2001, along with historic energy prices and federal spending data to see the affect energy price and R&D spending have on innovation in the non-hydro renewable energy industries – solar, wind, geothermal, oceanic, and fuel …

The Role Of Identity In Intra- And Inter-Group Bargaining In The Ultimatum Game, John H. Kim Jan 2008

The Role Of Identity In Intra- And Inter-Group Bargaining In The Ultimatum Game, John H. Kim

Undergraduate Economic Review

This paper investigates the role of intra- and inter-group effects on the ultimatum game. The paper presents the identity theory as a framework for analyzing intra- and intergroup bargaining behavior on the ultimatum game. An experimental ultimatum game was conducted between participants from Washington and Lee University and Virginia Military Institute. The results presented shows evidence of ultimatum bargaining behavior being influenced by in-group favoritism, along with some evidence of out-group hostility. The results also provide possible implications of the effect of testosterone levels.

The Incentive Effects Of ‘Minor League’ Tournaments: An Empirical Analysis Of The Pga Tour Qualifying Tournament And The Nationwide Tour, Adam Hanna Jan 2008

The Incentive Effects Of ‘Minor League’ Tournaments: An Empirical Analysis Of The Pga Tour Qualifying Tournament And The Nationwide Tour, Adam Hanna

Undergraduate Economic Review

This paper uses two original data sets from the world of professional golf to test tournament theory’s basic prediction that increasing prize levels lead to increased effort among tournament participants. The realm of professional golf was chosen because the incentive structure (prizes) and player output levels (scores) are readily available. Specifically, this paper uses time series data to determine if the rising prize money on the PGA Tour influences competitors’ scores at the PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament, and it uses cross-sectional data to determine if prize levels influence Nationwide Tour competitors’ scores as they attempt to move to the PGA …

Persistence Of Gender Occupational Segregation And The Gender Income Gap In Early 21st Century Usa, Alex Goga

Undergraduate Economic Review

This study has found evidence that occupational segregation is still present, as some traditionally feminine occupations (primary school teaching and nursing) comprise significantly more women than men. Furthermore, this study has found evidence that the earnings gender gap persists even in these occupations that continue to be dominated by women.

Evaluating The Efficiency Of Thirty-Five Law Schools Using Data Envelopment Analysis, Wade S. Murff Jan 2008

Evaluating The Efficiency Of Thirty-Five Law Schools Using Data Envelopment Analysis, Wade S. Murff

Undergraduate Economic Review

If legal institutions endorse LSAT scores and UGPAs as accurate assessments of ability, to what extent does “ability” influence wages in the legal job market? Do average salaries of graduates of top schools justify these schools’ lofty admittance standards? Earning a law degree does not automatically grant its holder the right to practice law; in fact, it is essentially a prerequisite for consideration by the professional organization that regulates the law profession in any given jurisdiction. Upon earning a law degree, aspirants must slay yet another mighty dragon, the bar exam. Given that certain law schools require excellent LSAT scores …

Infosys: An Analysis Of The Degree Of Covariance Between The Firm’S Nationally Traded Stock And Its American Depository (Ads), Rohan Poojara Jan 2008

Infosys: An Analysis Of The Degree Of Covariance Between The Firm’S Nationally Traded Stock And Its American Depository (Ads), Rohan Poojara

Undergraduate Economic Review

Researchers have proved the influence of the American stock markets on their Indian counterparts during the IT boom. This paper tests these market-wide results on a stockspecific basis by analyzing the degree of covariance between the equity issued by the Indian firm Infosys on the Bombay Stock Exchange (Stock) and its American Depositary Shares (ADS) on the NASDAQ. The study finds that unlike the influence of the American bourses on the Indian markets, the Infosys ADS does not have an economically significant influence on the Stock. This supports the efficient market hypothesis. However, unlike current research which finds an absence …

Caste-Based Exclusion In Nepal’S Communal Micro-Hydro Plants, Bikul M. Tulachan Jan 2008

Caste-Based Exclusion In Nepal’S Communal Micro-Hydro Plants, Bikul M. Tulachan

Undergraduate Economic Review

Discriminatory practices rooted in an ethno-caste system have dominated Nepal for centuries. This paper investigates the existence of such practices in Nepal's communal micro-hydro plants. A field research on the role of caste in influencing access to electricity was carried out in Ghandruk, Nepal. The research indicates that although the costs of establishing the micro-hydro plant is shared equally between user-groups, benefit sharing is highly uneven. This analysis demonstrates the need for development projects to be more aligned with socio-economic ground realities.

What Affects Graduation Rates Of Illinois Public High Schools?, Jazmen Rose

Undergraduate Economic Review

This paper attempts to determine: What affects the graduation rates of Illinois public high schools? This question will be answered based on explanatory variables deemed important by previous research. The relationship between Illinois public high school graduation rates and the percentage of low income students in the high school, the percentage of parental involvement within the school, instructional expenditures per pupil, and the number of students enrolled in the school will be examined. The data was gathered from various sources including the Interactive Illinois Report Card and the Illinois State Board of Education. The results of the study show that …
