Impacts Of Different Types Of Volatile Fatty Acids On The Bacterial Selection In Enhanced Biological Phosphorus Removal Systems, Jose Christiano Machado Jan 2004

Impacts Of Different Types Of Volatile Fatty Acids On The Bacterial Selection In Enhanced Biological Phosphorus Removal Systems, Jose Christiano Machado

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The impacts of different carbon sources, particularly VFAs, on EBPR's microbial population were investigated using T-RFLP and FISH. System performance and both general and specific microbial changes were investigated in SBR systems fed with acetate, propionate, butyrate, valerate, and glucose. Acetate and a mixture of acetate and propionate promoted the best P-removal. Butyrate and valerate lead the systems to fail in the long run. Glucose and propionate promoted poor EBPR, but the performance of the system fed with propionate improved with time. T-RFLP results indicated that short carbon chain VFAs, long carbon chain VFAs, and non-VFA favored different microbial populations …

The Distribution Of Phosphorus In The Nature Preserve At The Clark County Wetlands Park In Las Vegas, Nevada, Rosangela Gomes Brazao Jan 2003

The Distribution Of Phosphorus In The Nature Preserve At The Clark County Wetlands Park In Las Vegas, Nevada, Rosangela Gomes Brazao

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The main objective of this thesis was to investigate the distribution of phosphorus among three different compartments of the Upper Pond at the Nature Preserve at the Clark County Wetlands Park in Las Vegas, NV: influent and effluent water, sediments, and plants. Samples were collected from September 2002 to January of 2003 and analyzed for phosphorus content. Results showed that the Upper Pond removed 55% of the ortho phosphate (OP) and 39% of the total phosphorus (TP) loadings during the study period. Sediment results showed that the East Outflow concentrated the most P (644.85 +/- 120.26 mg P Kg-1), followed …

The Influence Of Denitrification In Clarifiers On Biological Phosphorus Removal At Ccsd Plant, Prithviraj Vasantrao Chavan Jan 2002

The Influence Of Denitrification In Clarifiers On Biological Phosphorus Removal At Ccsd Plant, Prithviraj Vasantrao Chavan

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Denitrification in biological reactors has been widely studied, whereas, little is known about denitrification occurring in secondary clarifiers. In this study an attempt was made to study denitrification occurring within a secondary clarifier at the Clark County Sanitation District (CCSD) wastewater treatment plant, Las Vegas. The results obtained from this study showed that denitrification and phosphorus (P) release were occurring within the CCSD clarifiers. Dissolved oxygen (DO) and soluble COD concentrations were found to be the most influencing parameters on denitrification and P-release within the clarifiers. The results also showed that sludge blanket height (SBH), solid flux, and state point …

Evaluation Of Factors Affecting The Performance Of Biological Phosphorus Removal In A Full-Scale Wastewater Treatment Plant, Cesar Rossas Mota Filho Jan 2001

Evaluation Of Factors Affecting The Performance Of Biological Phosphorus Removal In A Full-Scale Wastewater Treatment Plant, Cesar Rossas Mota Filho

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Parameters bearing on the performance of a full-scale 88-MGD enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) system were examined. Samples were collected for a 10-month period in a basin and in a secondary clarifier of the plant. Samples were analyzed for nitrate, total and ortho-phosphorus, COD, acetic acid, polyhydroxybutyrate, glycogen, calcium, magnesium, potassium, ammonia, alkalinity, TSS, ORP, pH, and DO. Profiles of the aerobic and anaerobic zones, and secondary clarifier showed that the plant is operating as an actual EBPR system, with sporadic phosphorus excursions. Low BOD input to the system, high phosphorus from return streams of the sludge handling process, high …

The Biological Removal Of Phosphorus At The Clark County Sanitation District Wastewater Treatment Plant, Jon Robert Becker Jan 2000

The Biological Removal Of Phosphorus At The Clark County Sanitation District Wastewater Treatment Plant, Jon Robert Becker

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This research examines the influence of operating parameters on the enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) from the effluent of the Clark County Sanitation District (CCSD) wastewater treatment plant. Several parameters that influence EBPR were investigated, including wastewater composition: (e.g. BOD, nitrate, nitrite, ammonia, Total P, Ortho-P, alkalinity, pH), dissolved oxygen levels, oxidation reduction potential, microbiology, volatile fatty acid concentrations, fraction of P in wasted sludge, and nitrification levels. Analysis of nitrate and effluent phosphorus levels indicated a strong correlation between the two parameters. Very strong denitrification, evidenced by very low nitrate levels, produced nitrogen gas that lifted microbes into the …
