The Effects Of Students' Asynchronous Online Discussions Of Conceptual Errors On Intentionally Flawed Teacher-Constructed Concept Maps, Magdalena Sas Jan 2008

The Effects Of Students' Asynchronous Online Discussions Of Conceptual Errors On Intentionally Flawed Teacher-Constructed Concept Maps, Magdalena Sas

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Research shows that online discussions are often unfocused and without providing much benefit to students' learning outcomes. One of the reasons behind this phenomenon is the lack of or inadequate scaffolding or guidance provided to students when participating on asynchronous discussion boards. The collaborative misconception mapping strategy is a tool that was designed to mediate cognitive and metacognitive processes via feedback provided by peers and a teacher-created concept map that contains intentional conceptual errors; This study evaluated the effects of collaborative misconception mapping as compared with those of a traditional online discussion activity, where students post responses to discussion questions. …

Cayley Maps For Certain Cyclic Groups With Odd Generators, Daniel Griswold Jan 2003

Cayley Maps For Certain Cyclic Groups With Odd Generators, Daniel Griswold

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

For this thesis I plan on using the AMS format. My Thesis Advisor and I will meet regularly to discuss my thesis topic, prove conjectures, write results as we make progress, develop a program for calculation of genus values under certain constraints, and then organize the work for both oral and written presentation; A Cayley graph provides us with a discrete model for a finite group with specified generating set. It is desirable to represent such structures in their simplest form and also so that certain symmetries are emphasized. By simplest form, we mean to draw these graphs on surfaces …

Average Cayley Genus For Cayley Maps With Dihedral Groups, Jamie Keith Langille Jan 2000

Average Cayley Genus For Cayley Maps With Dihedral Groups, Jamie Keith Langille

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Let Gamma be a finite group and let Delta be a generating set for Gamma. A Cayley map associated with Gamma and Delta is an oriented 2-cell embedding of the Cayley graph GDelta (Gamma) such that the rotation of arcs emanating from each vertex is determined by a unique cyclic permutation of generators and their inverses. A formula for the average Cayley genus is known for the dihedral group with generating set consisting of all the reflections. However, the known formula involves sums of certain coefficients of a generating function and its format does not specifically indicate the Cayley genus …

Reduction And Analysis Of Vla Maps For 281 Radio-Loud Quasars Using The Cray Y-Mp Supercomputer, Ailian Ding Jan 1992

Reduction And Analysis Of Vla Maps For 281 Radio-Loud Quasars Using The Cray Y-Mp Supercomputer, Ailian Ding

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The thesis reports the reduction and analysis of Very Large Array snapshot observations at 6 cm with the A and C arrays of 192 and 192 + 89 radio sources associated with quasars. The sample includes all of the candidates for the complete samples of radio-loud quasars discussed by Wills and Lynds (1978). The routine reduction included two passes of phase self-calibration. Maps were made with image size of 512 x 512. The A (C) array maps have 0.1 (1.3) arcsec cell sizes, with 0.1 to 0.2 (0.2 to 0.4) mJy/Beam rms noise and dynamic ranges of a few thousand. …
