Life History And Population Dynamics Of Daphnia In Seven Ephemeral Pools In Red Rock Canyon, Nevada, Priscilla Kathleen Bowman Oct 2008

Life History And Population Dynamics Of Daphnia In Seven Ephemeral Pools In Red Rock Canyon, Nevada, Priscilla Kathleen Bowman

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Seven ephemeral rock pools in Red Rock Canyon, Nevada were visited bimonthly over twelve months and sampled for resident zooplankton species. Population dynamics and life history characteristics of two Daphnia species, D. pulex and D. obtusa were analyzed with incidental attention given to an additional cladoceran, Moina sp. Aspects of the physical, chemical and biological environment were measured and evaluated. The behavior of these daphnid populations appears to be driven by the extreme seasonality of rock pool ecosystems between episodic disturbances of drought and deluge. No causal relationships between Daphnia population size or patterns of temporal change and abiotic factors …

An Alternative Study Of Chinese History: Two Daoist Temples, Joan Lorraine Mann Jan 2008

An Alternative Study Of Chinese History: Two Daoist Temples, Joan Lorraine Mann

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The Daoist temple is a largely overlooked feature in the study of the history of China. The temple has been an important component of Chinese history since the Zhou dynasty, beginning in the Spring and Autumn period and continuing into the Warring States period.1 It is Daoism that made immortals of mortal Chinese war heroes, emperors, leaders, and ancestors. It is these celestials and immortals, found only in a Chinese Daoist temple that can so successfully relate the history of the common man in China. The Chinese have venerated these Daoist celestials and immortals to the status of "gods," and …

This History Of Small Things, Paul Sacksteder Jan 2008

This History Of Small Things, Paul Sacksteder

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The poems in this thesis seek to explore the notion of uncertainty in terms of its value as both an intellectual and political position. Uncertainty is echoed both in subject matter and form. It serves not as a tool of conservatism, but as an opportunity towards empathy and expansion in a narrowing world; Ecology also plays a prominent role in both the poetry as well as the development of uncertainty and sustainability. The poems seek to broaden conceptions of ecology by drawing often disparate objects and concepts in proximity. These poems then exist in the anxiety of trying to understand …

The Thermal Ecology Of The Red-Spotted Toad, Bufo Punctatus, Across Life History, Candice Marie Rausch Jan 2007

The Thermal Ecology Of The Red-Spotted Toad, Bufo Punctatus, Across Life History, Candice Marie Rausch

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Compared with other terrestrial vertebrates, amphibians are generally less tolerant of thermal extremes. The Mojave Desert has ambient temperatures outside the proposed thermal tolerance zone of its mort abundant amphibian, the Red-spotted toad (Bufo (Anaxyrus) punctatus). Few data have been presented regarding the thermal ecology of these animals, including their thermal histories and proposed strategies to avoid temperature extremes. Previous studies suggest B. punctatus avoids extreme thermal exposure and adult toads experience body temperature (Tb) below a proposed critical thermal maximum (CTmax) of 35°C, and can maintain Tb at 25°C during the winter. Further, previous studies indicate a CTmax for …

The Reconstitutive Power Of Wovoka's Prophetic Discourse: A Rhetorical History Of The 1890 Ghost Dance Prophet, Alexander David May Jan 2004

The Reconstitutive Power Of Wovoka's Prophetic Discourse: A Rhetorical History Of The 1890 Ghost Dance Prophet, Alexander David May

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The tremendous influence of Wovoka, or Jack Wilson as he was commonly known, was manifested through his message of peace and renewal. The Ghost Dance Prophet of 1890 outlined a new way of life for "his people" which included every native nation, not just the Paiute. Delegations that came to hear Wovoka speak and letters he sent to the faithful spread the tenets of the religion among the indigenous people. Wovoka's rhetorical history illustrates the interplay of first persona, substantive message, and second persona as a means of transforming an audience. In addition, the parallels between the Paiute Prophet's discourse …

A Quantitative Investigation Of American History Software On Middle School Student Achievement Scores, Karla V Kingsley Jan 2004

A Quantitative Investigation Of American History Software On Middle School Student Achievement Scores, Karla V Kingsley

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to examine whether student use of the Ignite! Early American History software significantly affected student outcome achievement scores on a standards-based assessment. Students in three urban middle schools were divided into experimental and control groups with both groups being taught by the same teacher. Experimental group students used the Ignite! history software as a supplement to their regular American history curriculum, and students in the control group did not use the program. The study also examined how students with limited English proficiency (LEP) and students with special needs scored on the standardized test …

Depositional History Of The Black Mountain Conglomerate, Mohave County, Arizona: Sedimentary Response To Miocene Extension, Michelle Marie Williams Jan 2003

Depositional History Of The Black Mountain Conglomerate, Mohave County, Arizona: Sedimentary Response To Miocene Extension, Michelle Marie Williams

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study documents the Miocene depositional and extensional history for the area west of Wilson Ridge in the Black Mountains, northwestern Arizona. The field area, part of the Basin and Range province, lies within an area that experienced northward migration of intense volcanism several million years prior to significant regional extension. Extension propagated northward through the northern Colorado River extensional corridor to the Lake Mead area. Clastic sedimentary rocks in the basin are linked to the extension of the region; Documentation of the basin fill was conducted with the aim of determining whether sedimentary clasts can be tied to lithologies …

Where Sin Abounds: A Religious History Of Las Vegas, Stanley Allen Steward Jan 2003

Where Sin Abounds: A Religious History Of Las Vegas, Stanley Allen Steward

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Las Vegas has long been stigmatized with the label of "Sin City." While it is not difficult to understand how this image of Las Vegas came about, the power of this stereotype has masked one of the most interesting aspects of the local culture. It is a common assumption of many outsiders that Las Vegas is a spiritual wasteland devoid of any significant religious community and bereft of meaningful values or culture. But this is not the case. Las Vegas has a large, healthy, and expanding religious community. Within the religious milieu, there is a strong and rapidly expanding pentecostal …

From Neglected Waste To Protected Space: An Administrative History Of Mojave National Preserve, Eric Charles Nystrom Jan 2002

From Neglected Waste To Protected Space: An Administrative History Of Mojave National Preserve, Eric Charles Nystrom

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The Mojave National Preserve, a unit of the National Park Service, was created in 1994 in southeastern California. Its 1.6 million acres were used historically for extractive industries such as mining and ranching, and its recent history was shaped by the land's proximity to urban Los Angeles. The preserve was the fruit of a long political battle between environmental activists and conservative opponents, and the park's final administrative form and subsequent management was indelibly altered by the compromises made during the legislative fight. The park's subsequent history, including innovative planning efforts, a 1995 attempt by opponents to eliminate the preserve's …

From Sin To Sickness: A Sociological History Of The Problem Gambler, Bo Jason Bernhard Jan 2002

From Sin To Sickness: A Sociological History Of The Problem Gambler, Bo Jason Bernhard

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Long before medical and psychological experts determined that problem gambling qualified as a mental illness, moral experts determined that this problem could be "diagnosed" as a sin. This research examines pre-1915 gambling literature to determine the ways in which people who gambled too much were identified, named, and "treated" socially. Interestingly, virtually all of our current diagnostic criteria were identified by moral thinkers hundreds of years ago. Implications for the sociological history of problem gambling, the sociology of mental illness, and the sociology of religion and morality are discussed.

Pre-Service Secondary Mathematics Teachers' Attitudes About The History Of Mathematics, Kelly Marie Sullivan Jan 2000

Pre-Service Secondary Mathematics Teachers' Attitudes About The History Of Mathematics, Kelly Marie Sullivan

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study was conducted to show that using historical material to teach mathematical content to pre-service secondary mathematics teachers could improve their attitudes about incorporating the history of mathematics into the mathematics classroom. A historical module from the Mathematical Association of America was taught to an undergraduate class of pre-service secondary mathematics teachers. Their attitudes regarding the use of the history of mathematics in the mathematics classroom were then compared to the attitudes of students in another undergraduate class, taught by the same researcher, whose instruction did not incorporate history. Results from t-tests indicate that there was a positive change …

Paragenesis, Fluid Origin, And Thermal History Of A Low-Sulfidation Epithermal Gold-Silver System, Joel William Rotert Jan 2000

Paragenesis, Fluid Origin, And Thermal History Of A Low-Sulfidation Epithermal Gold-Silver System, Joel William Rotert

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Samples of banded veins, microcrystalline quartz veins, and hydrothermal breccias +/- Au in the southern Castle Mountains, California were collected from four different zones within and up to 5 km outside the mine area in order to construct a paragenesis, interpret fluid origin, describe the thermal history, and examine fluid inclusion gas compositions as an exploration tool for low-sulfidation deposits. Two-thirds of the gold from the Lesley Ann deposit is associated with pyrite, found in zones of intense silicification, and precipitated due to sulfidation of rhyolitic host rock during the earliest stages of hydrothermal activity. The remaining gold occurs freely …

"Welcome, Fellow Toastmasters": The History And Membership Of A Public Speaking Phenomenon, Ellen Beth Levine Bremen Jan 1999

"Welcome, Fellow Toastmasters": The History And Membership Of A Public Speaking Phenomenon, Ellen Beth Levine Bremen

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Since 1905, Toastmasters International (TI) serves as the most recognized organization for voluntary oral communication practice in the world. Due to the dearth of scholarly communication research regarding TI, this thesis details the history, educational structure, and program dynamics of the organization. Literature review included the nature and extent of post-secondary communication education, as well as social affiliation and leisure theories. Finally, an Internet survey of 343 international TI members revealed the demographics of the "typical" TI member: a male or female college graduate between the ages of 36--50, who works in a wide range of professions. The study also …

Exercising Authority: A Critical History Of Exercise Messages In Popular Magazines, 1925-1968, Dahn Edward Shaulis Jan 1997

Exercising Authority: A Critical History Of Exercise Messages In Popular Magazines, 1925-1968, Dahn Edward Shaulis

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to analyze exercise messages in American popular magazines. A critical perspective and historical sociological methods were used to examine more than 500 magazine articles published from 1925 to 1968. A common factor in many articles was the use of ideology mixes. Magazines used biomedicalization, materialism, nationalism, and patriarchy in several combinations to authorize restrictive exercise norms. Exercise norms were stratified by age, class, gender, and race, but changing ideology mixes and exercise norms often reflected changes in society. Biomedicalization authorized doctors as gatekeepers. It prescribed moderate activity for affluent men, but discouraged vigorous exercise …

The Impact And Pattern Of Gene And Genome Duplication In The History Of Increasing Organismal Complexity, Matthew Rand Ronshaugen Jan 1997

The Impact And Pattern Of Gene And Genome Duplication In The History Of Increasing Organismal Complexity, Matthew Rand Ronshaugen

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The increase in phenotypic or morphological complexity in organisms may stem from a corresponding increase in the complexity of the underlying genetic architecture, driven by the process of gene duplication. Gene duplication is a mutational mechanism that can impact the genome through the gradual birth and death of individual genes or clusters of genes, and through infrequent episodic events of whole genome duplication. Functional and pleiotropic differences among genes may impact the probability of fixation of duplicated genes and the facility of gene families to record duplication events across deep history. Phylogenetic inference of the relationship among genes in multigene …

The Paper Tiger And Its Predecessors: An Ethnologic History Of The American Indian Religious Freedom Act, Daniel Spencer Wall Jan 1995

The Paper Tiger And Its Predecessors: An Ethnologic History Of The American Indian Religious Freedom Act, Daniel Spencer Wall

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The American Indian Religious Freedom Act has proven to be a terrible disappointment for the Indians all across the country. This act presupposed an analogy between Native American ceremonial practices and Euro-American religions, but Native American ceremonies involve a broader range social institutions than Euro-American "religion." Hence, the analogy between Indian ceremonies and Euro-American religions broke down after passage of the act, and Indians failed to receive the legal remedies sought under its provisions. The following is an attempt to address the problems associated with this act by examining the historical development of a Native American rhetoric of religious freedom …

Life History, Diversity And Patterns Of Bat Community Structure In The Spring Mountains Of Southern Nevada, Marikay Allene Ramsey Jan 1995

Life History, Diversity And Patterns Of Bat Community Structure In The Spring Mountains Of Southern Nevada, Marikay Allene Ramsey

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study investigated the bat community of the Spring Mountains of southern Nevada from June 1992 through September 1994. Distributions, life history and general ecological attributes of fourteen species of bats were summarized. Thirteen species were present in low to mid elevations, ten species in mid to high elevations, and three species at all elevations. Bats were most abundant in mid summer. Few differences were found among species in time of activity. The ranges of temperatures in which bats were active generally reflected their habitat use. Maximum and minimum temperatures, and weather were the abiotic factors best predicting bat activity; …

Life History Biology And Soil Characteristics Of Two Species Of Arctomecon (Papaveraceae), Shelia Kathleen Sheldon Jan 1994

Life History Biology And Soil Characteristics Of Two Species Of Arctomecon (Papaveraceae), Shelia Kathleen Sheldon

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Two rare plant species of the Mojave Desert were investigated in this study. Life history and reproductive data as well as vegetative associates and soil characteristics for Arctomecon californica Torr. and Frem. and Arctomecon merriamii Cov. were collected. Results for the life history and reproductive data show that the highest mortality in both species occurs at the seedling stage. Loss of potential seed, for both species, was highest at the bud and capsule stage. Arctomecon californica was found to be reproductively self-incompatible, while A. merriamii was able to self-pollinate. Results from the vegetative and soil data show that the vegetation …

A Review Of The History And Structure Of Public Speaking At Nevada Power Company: A Case Study, Julie Ann Foley Jan 1994

A Review Of The History And Structure Of Public Speaking At Nevada Power Company: A Case Study, Julie Ann Foley

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The author reviews the history and structure of public speaking at Nevada Power Company. It seeks to: (1) determine whether the principles of public speaking as described in college text books are applied in corporate training, and (2) determine the level of support given by Nevada Power to its speakers; Findings indicate that the corporations studied utilize most aspects of Neo-Aristotelian model. Much of the training deals with delivery, style, motivation and arrangement, with some attention to language. However, heavy emphasis is also placed on evidence and reasoning, with relatively little attention to speaker credibility development or emotional appeal; Corporate …

The History Of The Public Two Year Community College In The State Of Nevada From 1977 To 1993, D Gause-Snelson Jan 1994

The History Of The Public Two Year Community College In The State Of Nevada From 1977 To 1993, D Gause-Snelson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

On May 26, 1789 in his first lecture as a history professor, Friedrich von Schiller stated "The world's history is the world's judgment." An institution's history may well be the institution's judgment. Careful historical documentation of an institution provides data to determine the path of the institution, and to predict accurate trends. This information is vital to positively and accurately shape the future and growth of an institution; This study collected data pertaining to the four public two-year institutions in Nevada from 1977 to 1993. Five specific areas of concern were addressed. They were: governance, demographics, curriculum, finance, and facility …

History, Organization And Belief Among Cuban "Plantado" Political Prisoners, 1959-1993, William Raymond Yaworsky Jan 1993

History, Organization And Belief Among Cuban "Plantado" Political Prisoners, 1959-1993, William Raymond Yaworsky

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Anti-Castro activists began organizing guerrilla groups in the early 1960's to oppose the revolutionary government of Cuba. The perception that the new regime posed a threat to religion and pre-existing cultural values were among the motives for this activity. This thesis presents three case studies of individuals who due to their beliefs, became guerrillas, were imprisoned for that activity, and who subsequently refused to participate in the prison reeducation program. The findings of this study indicate that ideology and beliefs function to provide meaningful explanations to social life, and are not necessarily thin veils for self interest masquerading as principle. …

A History Of Literary Study Of The Bible, Joseph Patrick Wall Jan 1993

A History Of Literary Study Of The Bible, Joseph Patrick Wall

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Dogmatic biblical exegesis had a near monopoly until well into the modern era. Similarly, in academic circles, "biblical criticism" has invariably meant historical-critical study of the Bible. Both dogmatic and historical interpreters have read the Bible primarily for information--either about religion or history. The Bible's cognitive content has been primary. But now, in the latter part of the twentieth century, the intrinsic literary worth of the Bible is being widely noted; scholarly articles on the Bible regularly appear in standard literary journals; The current explosion of interest in this field may lead one to suspect 'faddism.' Nothing could be further …

The History Of Wilderness In Nevada And The United States, Jerry Lynn Reynoldson Jan 1992

The History Of Wilderness In Nevada And The United States, Jerry Lynn Reynoldson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The following thesis addresses the role that interest groups play in the formation of policy within the government of the United States. Furthermore, it concerns itself with one specific policy issue as a means of accomplishing that goal; wilderness policy. Clearly, it can be established that interest groups are an integral part of the public policy process in democratic models of government. By charting the course of a policy issue, such as wilderness, from its inception through the various stages to final resolution, it is possible to see how a federal policy is influenced by interest groups. As this policy …
