The Lost Promise Of Heaven: An Examination Of Gender In Children's Literature, 1790--1830, Ea Nicole Madrigal Jan 2008

The Lost Promise Of Heaven: An Examination Of Gender In Children's Literature, 1790--1830, Ea Nicole Madrigal

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The United States republic can be defined by its cultural, social, and political change. Historians like Linda Kerber contend that this moment magnified gender difference. This was in fact a time that gender expectations were further defined. However, representations of gender in children's literature indicate that although some stories illustrated different roles and expectations for male and female readers, there were other stories that emphasized similarities between all children; Analogous to Susan Juster's findings from this period that men and women described religious conversion experiences similarly, religious children's literature detailed the spiritual commonalities of boys and girls. Gender was insignificant …

Shock Attenuation And Impact Characteristics For Children Running At Different Stride Lengths, Kunal Bhanot Jan 2007

Shock Attenuation And Impact Characteristics For Children Running At Different Stride Lengths, Kunal Bhanot

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to quantify shock attenuation (SA) and impact characteristics for children (boys and girls) running with different stride lengths (SL). Ten physically active children (10.7+/-1.1 yrs; 40+10.3 kg; 145.2+/-7.3 cm) ran at a constant speed of 3m/s +/- 5% range to complete three stride length conditions: Preferred stride length (PSL), -15%PSL and +15%PSL. During PSL, participants were given no instructions regarding stride length. During -15%PSL and +15%PSL, participants were required to strike markers placed on the floor that resulted in stride length of -15% and +15% of PSL. Ground reaction forces were recorded (1008 Hz) …

Effects Of Traumatic Brain Injury On The Attention System Of Children, Brandon Steven Park Jan 2007

Effects Of Traumatic Brain Injury On The Attention System Of Children, Brandon Steven Park

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Mirsky et al. (1991) proposed a four factor structure of attention (Shift, Focus, Encode, and Sustain) that found strong support across various clinical and non-clinical samples (see Mirsky & Duncan, 2004). Using a differing theoretical model Spikman et al. (1999) found that traumatic brain injury (TBI) changed the measured structure of attention. The purpose of the study was to assess if the structure of attention maintained in children who had sustained a TBI using the Mirsky model of attention. For the study 151 children between the ages of 8.9 and 18.4 years (mean 12.9, sd 2.6) suffering from traumatic brain …

Residential Lead Hazards, Nutritional Deficiencies, And Socio-Cultural Factors Related To Hispanic Children With Blood Lead Levels Greater Than Or Equal To Five Micrograms Per Deciliter, Elena E Cabb

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

One of the most significant public health successes during the late 20th century was the reduction of blood lead levels among children in the United States. However, lead continues to be a public health issue because it often affects minority children of lower socioeconomic status, who live in older homes. Young children are especially susceptible to the harmful affects of lead due to their vulnerable developmental state. According to research, the most common sources of lead exposure for U.S. children are lead-based paint and lead-contaminated dust in the home; This study examined residential lead hazards, nutritional deficiencies, and socio-cultural factors …

Each group included …

The Development Of Children's Orthographic Knowledge: A Microgenetic Perspective, Ann C Sharp Jan 2006

The Development Of Children's Orthographic Knowledge: A Microgenetic Perspective, Ann C Sharp

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Literacy scholars traditionally described spelling development as a stage-like progression of increasing orthographic understanding measured by orthographic feature errors children used but confused (Henderson, 1980; Ehri, 1992). Overlapping Wave theorists defined spelling development as a series of adaptive choices between sophisticated and unsophisticated spelling strategies measured by the type and amount of strategies children used (Siegler, 1996). To disentangle discrepancies found between the alternative viewpoints, the current study: replicated and extended a previous investigation that described spelling development as overlapping waves (Riffle-Johnson & Sieger, 1999); investigated differential feedback conditions as a source of spelling growth; and examined correlates between orthographic …

Brief Therapy For Traumatized Children, Lisa Marie Linning Jan 2005

Brief Therapy For Traumatized Children, Lisa Marie Linning

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Traumatic child maltreatment can negatively impact every developmental domain of a child, when left untreated. Thus, child psychologists have recognized a critical need for treatment and prevention strategies to circumvent the negative trajectories that can develop after traumatic events. Brief Therapy for Traumatized Children (BTTC) was developed to treat traumatized youth in shelter care. Treatment components included psychoeducation, building effective coping strategies, boundary setting, anxiety management skills, challenging cognitive distortions, development of trauma narrative and journaling. One hundred-forty-seven participants from a children's shelter in Las Vegas, NV, aged 12--17 years, were voluntarily recruited and assessed for trauma symptoms. Data from …

Positively Identifying Children As Citizens: A Call For Parallel Due Process Rights, Margot Elizabeth Rudy Jan 2004

Positively Identifying Children As Citizens: A Call For Parallel Due Process Rights, Margot Elizabeth Rudy

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This work addresses the need for parallel due process rights for children by investigating the nature of juvenile welfare policies that affect abused and neglected children by focusing on the Adoption Safe Families Act. Upon the settlement of the U.S., common law from England, known as parens patriae, has governed the juvenile justice system. This common law has recognized children are indeed a State interest and that a child is a different type of citizen than an adult. Because children are dependant on their parents and not seen as full-fledged citizens, the State has assumed the responsibility of ensuring that …

Children With Disabilities In The Juvenile Justice System, Renetta M Stevens Jan 2004

Children With Disabilities In The Juvenile Justice System, Renetta M Stevens

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Children and youth with disabilities are over represented in the juvenile justice system. Studies show that a lack of compliance, monitoring and enforcement of the mandates of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) exists. The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship, if any, of the over representation of children and youth in the juvenile justice system and a deficiency in providing special education supports and services as mandated by the IDEA. The files of children and youth presently involved in the juvenile justice system were reviewed for this study and the available educational records, of those …

A Comparison Of Single And Combined Social Interaction Interventions To Increase The Social Interaction Of Preschool Children In Inclusive Settings, Judith Elizabeth Terpstra

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Many young children with disabilities are being educated in inclusive preschool settings. Social competence for these children is often less than that of their peers and the typical children in the inclusive setting usually are not aware of appropriate methods for interacting with children with disabilities. Research concerning effective methods to increase the social interactions between children with and without disabilities is needed to ensure successful educational experiences for children with and without disabilities in these settings; This study investigated the difference between the use of a single social interaction strategy and the use of a combined social interaction strategy …

Effects Of Classwide Peer Tutoring (Cwpt) On Social Interactions Of Children With And Without English Proficiency, Yaoying Xu Jan 2003

Effects Of Classwide Peer Tutoring (Cwpt) On Social Interactions Of Children With And Without English Proficiency, Yaoying Xu

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Learning and Education occur in social contexts. The quality of children's peer relationships is an important indication of children's current and later social adjustment. Children with peer problems tend to experience higher levels of loneliness and other undesirable affective consequences, including social dissatisfaction and worrying about peer relations. Because of the limited language proficiency and cultural and ethnic differences among children with LEP, some of their social behaviors are considered inappropriate by their non-LEP teachers and peers. On the other hand, children with LEP may feel that they do not fit in a group or class activity. As a result, …

Precipitating And Prophylactic Factors Contributing To Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptomatology In Maltreated Children, Lisa Marie Linning

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study examined mediating factors that lead to, or buffer against, development of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after child maltreatment. Fifty-five children aged 8--17 years voluntarily completed self-report questionnaires and a structured diagnostic interview. It was hypothesized that (1) chronicity and severity of abuse amplify PTSD risk when a child has limited support networks, ineffective coping, external locus of control, affect dysregulation, and a dysfunctional family; (2) key family and victim characteristics would help to ameliorate effects of traumatic abuse; (3) the combination of precipitating and prophylactic factors would determine the effectiveness of managing traumatic maltreatment. Results suggest that dysthymia, …
