Combating Transnational Organized Crime In Thailand, Kiattisak Chanjana Apr 2023

Combating Transnational Organized Crime In Thailand, Kiattisak Chanjana

Theses and Dissertations

Globalization is described as the removal of barriers to facilitate the movement of goods and funds across national borders. However, this phenomenon has also benefited transnational organized crime networks by providing them opportunities to create new markets for illicit goods and services or infiltrate businesses or governments. In addition, the nature of criminal activities has changed due to the actions of organized criminal groups that commit crimes in one state but carry out the majority of their preparation, planning, direction, and participation in another state. As a result, transnational organized crime activities have an effect on the criminalization and collection …

Corruption And Coordination In Russia’S Economy, Peter Kalev Elias Oct 2021

Corruption And Coordination In Russia’S Economy, Peter Kalev Elias

Theses and Dissertations

This project seeks to bring a deeper understanding of non-western, authoritarian economies to the Varieties of Capitalism (VoC) literature. Many of the most stunning practices of post-Soviet Russia, such as corporate takeovers, the virtual economy, and informal sector jobs find their roots in Soviet practices that were originally implemented to avoid an inefficient and overcontrolling centralized government. Culturally, some of these institutions have roots in historical institutions of patronage and self-interested giving. As such, Russia’s particular version of capitalism as it presents today makes sense historically when the evolution of its institutions are taken into account. Further, instead of characterizing …

Curse Or Cure? Remittances And Corruption In The Developing World, Michael D. Tyburski May 2014

Curse Or Cure? Remittances And Corruption In The Developing World, Michael D. Tyburski

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation examines the relationship between migrant remittances, money earned by migrant workers and sent back home, and corruption. Remittances total more $400 billion US a year, making them an important capital flow with understudied political consequences. Some scholarship argues that remittances increase corruption by allowing governments to reduce their provision of public goods and redistribute wealth to political supporters as private goods. In contrast, I argue that the relationship between remittances and corruption varies by regime type. Remittances will likely aggravate corruption in relatively authoritarian regimes where governments require smaller supporting coalitions and may be more likely to view …

The Effect Of Information And Communications Technology (Ict) Diffusion On Corruption And Transparency (A Global Study), Leebrian Ernest Gaskins Jun 2013

The Effect Of Information And Communications Technology (Ict) Diffusion On Corruption And Transparency (A Global Study), Leebrian Ernest Gaskins

Theses and Dissertations

Is the diffusion of information and communication technologies (ICTs) the “magic bullet” for effectively reducing corruption? Can government transparency be increased by ICT diffusion? Does ICT diffusion increase governmental transparency, thereby reducing corruption? A few previous studies have measured the relationship between ICTs, transparency, and corruption. Generally, such studies focus on the role of electronic governance (e-governance) in facilitating state-citizen interactions and how e-governance acts as a corruption deterrent. This study digresses from past literature by directly exploring the effects of the ICT environment, using the Networked Readiness Index (NRI), and diffusion of two specific ICTs (e.g. the number of …
