Associative And Non-Associative Learning In The Monodelphis Domestica, Ana C. Ramirez
Associative And Non-Associative Learning In The Monodelphis Domestica, Ana C. Ramirez
Theses and Dissertations
Learning encompasses multiple important processes that vary within organisms and that are affected by different factors. Two of the most important types of learning are associative and non-associative learning. Even though past research has studied animal learning in multiple species, there is limited research on learning in the Monodelphis domestica. It is imperative to further the knowledge on this species since multiple fields use it as an animal model for research. The current study examined both non-associative and associative learning in the Monodelphis. Non-associative learning was explored by using a habituation-dishabituation paradigm, while associative learning was examined using the …
Behavior Plasticity Mitigates The Effect Of Climate Warming In White-Tailed Deer, Carter L. Wolff
Behavior Plasticity Mitigates The Effect Of Climate Warming In White-Tailed Deer, Carter L. Wolff
Theses and Dissertations
Climate change can alter the ecology of natural systems through various mechanisms, such as direct thermal effects on a consumer. However, consumers may employ behavioral mechanisms in response to warming. Among these may be spatial or temporal shifts in activity, making use of thermal heterogeneity on the landscape. Despite this, few studies consider the role of behavioral plasticity and spatial or temporal heterogeneity in the context of climate change. I conducted experiments to evaluate the importance of behavior in mediating the net effects of warming at the population and the individual level using captive white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus). I created …
An Examination Of The Caught Being Good Game In A High School Special Education Setting, Reeva Christine Morton
An Examination Of The Caught Being Good Game In A High School Special Education Setting, Reeva Christine Morton
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the current study is to examine the effects of the Caught Being Good Game (CBGG) on students’ classroom behaviors. The CBGG is a positive variation of the Good Behavior Game, which has been identified as an evidenced-based intervention designed for managing classroom behavior across students, behaviors, and settings. In the current study, the effectiveness of the CBGG intervention was examined within 2 high school special education classrooms located at two school districts in rural southeastern United States. Using a multiple baseline design, the data were analyzed using visual inspection and calculation of non-overlapping data. Results revealed that …
An Analysis Of Innovate Training With Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops Truncatus), Raymond John Van Steyn
An Analysis Of Innovate Training With Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops Truncatus), Raymond John Van Steyn
Theses and Dissertations
The National Aquarium in Baltimore, Maryland conducted a training program in 2014 to develop a gestural command for their dolphins called “innovate”. This training paradigm was developed to resemble the seminal research by Pryor, Haag and O’Reilly (1969), as well as more recent efforts of Braslau-Schneck (1993) and Kuczaj and Eskelinen (2014) of training dolphins to offer “creative” behaviors not developed through conventional methods of behavioral modification, such as shaping. The goal of the present study was to observe records taken during the National Aquarium’s training procedure as well as data collected ~3 years after said training in order to …
The Effects Of Self-Monitoring Of Behavior On Academic Achievement, Meredith Keller
The Effects Of Self-Monitoring Of Behavior On Academic Achievement, Meredith Keller
Theses and Dissertations
This study examines whether implementing a self-monitoring behavior plan will improve student achievement. Four students from a third grade inclusion classroom were taught to self-monitor their behavior for a period of 10 weeks. Each student was also tested weekly on reading comprehension using a standards-based ten-question assessment. During the 10-week period, the classroom teacher noted the number of prompts given to each of the students. A prompt was documented when the student was demonstrating inappropriate behavior. After the intervention was implemented, each of the four students demonstrated an overall decrease in the number of prompts required. Additionally, all four students …
Prevalence And Determinants Of Self-Medication With Antibiotics In High And Low-Income Areas Within Cairo, Shaymaa Mohamed Hassan
Prevalence And Determinants Of Self-Medication With Antibiotics In High And Low-Income Areas Within Cairo, Shaymaa Mohamed Hassan
Theses and Dissertations
Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) is currently a global threat, and one of the reasons for increasing AMR rates is antibiotics overuse. Antibiotics overuse is not only due to physician prescriptions -although that is also high- but also because of self-medication with antibiotics (SMA). SMA varies across countries and populations depending on multiple factors and among them is the socioeconomic status. Socioeconomic disparities have been linked to SMA rates. In Egypt, namely Cairo, little data is available regarding SMA or surveillance of antibiotic consumption. The aims of this study were to a) estimate and compare the prevalence of SMA in two socioeconomically …
Patterns Of Interactive System Use By Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops Truncatus), Stephanie Bousseau
Patterns Of Interactive System Use By Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops Truncatus), Stephanie Bousseau
Theses and Dissertations
In the 1970s through the 1990s, artificial languages and codes were being used as a window into understanding different species’ cognitive abilities and to afford them choice and control in captive environments. In a study by Reiss and McCowan (1993), two young captive born male bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) and their mothers were given an underwater interactive system that afforded them some degree of choice and control in obtaining specific contingencies. The dolphins’ use of specific visual elements presented via on a 3 x 3 key matrix resulted in the production of computer generated whistles followed by the …
Learning And Behavior In Hatchling Trachemys Scripta Exposed To Bisphenol-A During Embryonic Development, Justin E. Dillard
Learning And Behavior In Hatchling Trachemys Scripta Exposed To Bisphenol-A During Embryonic Development, Justin E. Dillard
Theses and Dissertations
Steroids play an integral role in orchestrating embryonic development, and can affect a suite of phenotypic traits, including learning and memory. Endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) can mimic the effects of steroids and can affect the same suites of phenotypic traits during embryonic development. Bisphenol-A (BPA) is an EDC that mimics the action of estrogen, and recent work is beginning to implicate BPA in effects on learning and behavior similar to those caused by estrogen treatment studies. Red-eared slider turtles (Trachemys scripta) are a good system to investigate the effects of BPA on learning and behavior, both because the molecular underpinnings …
Neurochemistry, Physiology, And Behavior In A Model Of Gulf War Illness, Victoria A. Macht
Neurochemistry, Physiology, And Behavior In A Model Of Gulf War Illness, Victoria A. Macht
Theses and Dissertations
Upon returning from the first Gulf War, soldiers cited a plethora of unexplained physical and cognitive deficits which have since been termed Gulf War Illness (GWI). Presentation of GWI is positively correlated with pyridostigmine bromide (PB) use, which was prophylactically administered to soldiers in response to threats of chemical warfare. To test the overarching hypothesis that PB interacted with stress of deployment to alter neural, endocrine, and immune systems, the following studies used a 2×2 rodent model with 14 days of drug treatment (vehicle; PB) and 10 days of repeated restraint stress (stressed) or non-stressed-control conditions. Results indicate that PB …

Theses and Dissertations
At White Rose Middle School (WRMS), in the lower Piedmont of South Carolina, students with individualized education plans (IEPs), behavioral intervention plans (BIPs), and 504 Plans were placed in the inclusion classroom setting resulting in repeated negative behavior patterns that drew the attention of their peers. Students assigned to the inclusion classroom included regular education students, students identified with a “learning disability,” and students identified as English language learners (ELL). The negative behaviors expressed in the inclusion classroom were categorized as bullying behaviors that disrupted the classroom environment. The purpose of the present action research study was to determine if …
Social Influence On Consumers’ Online Review Behavior, Hengyun Li
Social Influence On Consumers’ Online Review Behavior, Hengyun Li
Theses and Dissertations
Online reviews constitute an important source of word-of-mouth, which can affect consumers’ product choices as well as company sales and profitability. Therefore, understanding the factors underlying consumers’ online posting behavior is essential for business success and relevant knowledge development. This dissertation consists of three independent but closely related studies focusing on hotel and restaurant contexts. The objectives of this dissertation are to investigate how prior reviews and disconfirmation (i.e., the deviance between post-consumption evaluations and other consumers’ prior average review rating) may affect subsequent consumers’ online review-posting behavior in terms of their willingness to post online reviews, the review ratings …
The Mechanical Properties And Deformation Behavior Of Heat Treated Versus As-Received Inconel X-750, Christopher Marsh
The Mechanical Properties And Deformation Behavior Of Heat Treated Versus As-Received Inconel X-750, Christopher Marsh
Theses and Dissertations
X-750 is a nickel-chromium based super alloy of usefulness in a wide variety of applications such as gas turbines, rocket engines, nuclear reactors, pressure vessels, tooling, and aircraft structures. Its good mechanical properties are due to the strengthening from precipitation of γ′ particles upon prior ageing heat treatment. In this work, the effect of such heat treatment on the mechanical properties, tensile behavior, and fracture mechanisms of X-750 was studied at various temperatures by comparing it with a non-aged, solution annealed X-750. Tensile tests were conducted from room temperatures up to 900 °C at three separate strain rates (10-3, 10-4, …

College Students And Corporate Social Responsibility: An Examination Of Corporate-Social Responsible Behavior In College Athletics From The Students’ Perspective, R. Jacob Gilbert
Theses and Dissertations
Much research has been done on corporate social responsibility in the business world. Additionally, while there are major gaps in research on the sports side of corporate social responsibility, there has been very little - if any - research done into corporate social responsibility in college athletics. With approximately 130 major Division I football programs with operating budgets rivaling major corporations, in addition to a plethora of other revenue sports, the actions of these institutions also need to be studied. Thus, in an effort to understand the socially responsible actions of these institutions, this paper dives into the student perspective …
