In my paintings and prints, I create to understand my experiences. I make layered, repetitive marks and gestures that consist of spherical masses, orbits, and cellular forms. The shapes represent aspects of reproduction and symbolize my thoughts and ideas about procreation. In making pieces, I employ a mathematical system that describes growth patterns found in nature. I use this system as a way of echoing natural structures, as well as a way of focusing my attention. I create multiple small pieces and present them in large, gridded formats. These pieces are abstracted narratives of my thoughts and feelings.

The following is an exploration of ideas and themes related to my studio work, past and present, concrete and aspirational. I approach painting as an experience of pleasure and as a mode of resistance and critique. I will discuss how my work is aligned with many of the themes found in the Pattern and Decoration movement of the 1970s. My work is a response to random happenings that provide me with opportunities for creativity. I intuitively handle my materials and media, and have developed a personally symbolic palette. I never know exactly how a piece of art will turn out. I begin my paintings by taking photographs of various places or by working on site. My imagery typically consists of landscapes from the mountains of Virginia to the coastlines of Italy. Just like nature and life, my work is made up of many smaller parts working synergeticly in order to function properly. The systems I use are increasingly more complex, involving layers of interacting information competing for attention, giving rise to emergent qualities that could not

Images of nature and family comprise the gestural and abstracted interpretations of my life events. I use my photographs as inspiration for my work. I fuse layers of color, light, and line into glass and onto wood to suspend a personal memory. I want to capture those moments that flit by in life and envelop them in the media.

In my fused glass work, I manipulate color, light, and line. In these pieces, I layer frits and sheets of glass onto an abstract sculpted relief of fiberglass and fuse them into one thick slab. The sculpted relief creates a textured …
