Evaluating Hydration And Artificial Aging Effects On The Paleointensity In Natural Glass, Sebastian Fearn Dec 2020

Evaluating Hydration And Artificial Aging Effects On The Paleointensity In Natural Glass, Sebastian Fearn

Theses and Dissertations

Young natural volcanic glasses have been successfully used to recover Earth’s geomagnetic field intensity (paleointensity). However, the magnetic stability and reliability of volcanic glass as a paleomagnetic recorder over geologic time is unclear. Paleointensity estimates may be influenced by natural processes that alter magnetic mineralogy. Previous results from paleointensity and rock magnetic experiments suggest that post-emplacement hydrothermal alteration can alter the magnetic remanence and can possibly cause paleointensity experiments to fail. Low-temperature hydration and natural relaxation of the glass structure over time may also adversely impact paleointensity results. In this study, rhyolitic and basaltic glass specimens underwent artificial aging and …

"Accountable To No One": Confronting Police Power In Black Milwaukee, William I. Tchakirides

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation uncovers the roots of discriminatory police power in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and traces Black-led efforts to make the city’s police bureaucracy more accountable to all citizens. It analyzes the politics of police reform in the century spanning the passage of two state laws that reconfigured Milwaukee’s law enforcement arrangements. The first (1885) removed City Hall’s managerial control over the Milwaukee Police Department (MPD). Corporate elites and social reformers fearful of rising working-class power and moral degeneration in the immigrant-industrial city lobbied for the statute’s enactment. The second (1984) reversed course, re-empowering non-police officials after decades of Black-led campaigns for …

Deep Learning-Based Reconstruction Of Volumetric Ct Images Of Vertebrae From A Single View X-Ray Image, Mingren Xiang

Theses and Dissertations

Computed tomography is often used in medical fields today because it creates more detailed information for doctors than regular X-ray images. However, one major side effect is that patients may be exposed to a large dose of radiation because it takes hundreds of X-ray images to compute a CT scan. Another shortcoming is that patients are required to lay down on the CT machine for the scan, which is usually not the ideal position when diagnosing spine related issues such as cervical spondylosis and lumbar disc herniation. The prime motivation for this study is to reconstruct CT images using only …
