The Effect Of Using Games In The Language Arts Classroom On The Achievement And Motivation Of Ninth Graders, Jan Dineen
The Effect Of Using Games In The Language Arts Classroom On The Achievement And Motivation Of Ninth Graders, Jan Dineen
Theses
The proposed study would be conducted with fifty to sixty rural, male and female students enrolled in ninth grade language arts classes to determine whether the use of games bas a greater effect on achievement and motivation, than the use of the traditional techniques of lecture and discussion. A modification of the nonequivalent control group design is intended for use which two intact classrooms to test the two hypotheses. The effects of the treatment would be measured by a twenty item achievement test adapted from two other standardized achievement tests and one criterion-referenced test. It would also be assessed by …

The Effect Of Screen Ruling On The Saturation Of Pastel Gamut Colors, John T. Chittick
The Effect Of Screen Ruling On The Saturation Of Pastel Gamut Colors, John T. Chittick
Theses
Reproduction of pastel colors by offset lithography produces images that have less color saturation than their continuous tone counterparts. This problem is primarily attributable to the halftone structure which approximates continuous tone pastels with large amounts of white paper and small amounts of chromatic ink. This thesis investigates the effect of screen frequency upon pastel color saturation. Single and two color overprint tints of nominal five, 10, and 15 percent printing dot areas were printed in 85, 100, 120, 133, 150, and 200 lines screen rulings. The reflectances of these colors were measured with a colorimeter and converted to CIEL*a*b* …

Granularity: Investigating Equations That Convert (T) To (D), Frederick Catt
Granularity: Investigating Equations That Convert (T) To (D), Frederick Catt
Theses
An investigation was done on three published expanded equations, that convert (T) to (D). T. Celio, J. Altman and M. Abouelata published equations of the same form, but with differing constants. Their equations were derived by using an assumed square-wave transmittance trace. The investigation was to find the best predictor of (D) from (T) . Both practical and simulation tests were run. The density range was extended, to check for failure at both high and low densities. Standard granularity measurement procedures were followed as close as possible. Results, from the practical tests, showed Altman 's equation the best predictor of …

Osmotic And Mean Activity Coefficients Of Libr And Lic In Methanol At 25, 35, And 45 Degrees C, Peggy Tomasula
Osmotic And Mean Activity Coefficients Of Libr And Lic In Methanol At 25, 35, And 45 Degrees C, Peggy Tomasula
Theses
Vapor pressure depression data of LiBr and LiCl in methanol at temperatures of 25,35, and 45°C were measured in the molality range 0.1-4.4m using a static method, where the difference in vapor pressure of the electrolytic solution is compared to that of pure methanol.
Osmotic coefficients were calculated from the vapor pressure data. This data was then correlated with both the one parameter Bromley equation and the three parameter Pitzer equation. For all systems at all temperatures, the data were better correlated by the Pitzer equation than with the Bromley equation. Mean activity coefficients of the two salts at the …

Kinetics Of Rehalogenation Bleaches, Kenneth A. Harrison
Kinetics Of Rehalogenation Bleaches, Kenneth A. Harrison
Theses
A study was made to determine if a correlation existed between the silver density at 318 nm and the actual amount of silver present in photographic film. Based on twenty (20) samples of bleached and unbleached film, a linear correlation was found, for specific film/ developer combinations, with a correlation coefficient in excess of 0.99. The above correlation was then used to evaluate the bleaching kinetics of several rehalogenation type bleaches. It was postulated that there is a charge barrier effect between the photographic gelatin and the positively charged oxidizing agent in the bleaches. This was caused by the pH …
An Investigation Of The Fog Problem In Autoradiographic Intensification Method, Lawrence Wheaton
An Investigation Of The Fog Problem In Autoradiographic Intensification Method, Lawrence Wheaton
Theses
Methods of decreasing the fog density level in an autoradiographically intensified image were investigated. The methods included a more proportional conversion of silver to silver sulfide, decreasing the amount of fog silver in the original image, and minimizing the formation of fog in the original image. Thirty percent exposures of an aluminum 11 step wedge and a lead resolution target were made using Kodak film type XG-1. The underexposed films were either developed in the Kodak RP X-Omat processor or manually developed. All the films were radioactivated in an alkaline solution of sulfur-35 thiourea for 30 minutes. The activated films …

An Investigation Of A Matching Lexical Cloze Procedure With Eighth Grade Students, Elaine S. Bewig
Theses
In order to systematize the item writing procedure for developing reading comprehension measures for the regular classroom, the major purpose of this study was to compare the reliability, validity, and difficulty of a matching lexical cloze test, two traditional or passage-question group informal reading tests, and a standardized measure of reading comprehension, the Stanford Achievement Test. One of the traditional group informals was composed of two reading sections, each followed by 20- 25 literal comprehension questions which were developed by Finn in his dissertation of 1973. The other traditional group informal was composed of two reading selections taken from a …
Spatial Frequency Processing In The Human Visual System: A Study Of Black Versus White, Robert Seyfert
Spatial Frequency Processing In The Human Visual System: A Study Of Black Versus White, Robert Seyfert
Theses
The human visual system responses to resolution targets whose small area spatial content has been altered from white to black has been investigated. Modified tri-bar targets were presented to observers on a rear projection screen at constant average luminance and varying levels of contrast. Each observer was asked to determine if he could see the target and if the target had been modified. Responses indicate that there is no difference in the visibility of targets in which small areas have been changed to white or black but whose spatial frequency content is the same.
Light Scattering In Unprocessed Photographic Emulsions, Jo S. Kirkenaer
Light Scattering In Unprocessed Photographic Emulsions, Jo S. Kirkenaer
Theses
A method is proposed to measure scattering characteristics of non-processed photographic emulsions without using expensive or complicated computer processing techniques. A photo goniometer was assembled from a standard spectrometer, a lightsource and a photodiode. Film samples were measured both in air and in an index matching liquid comparing samples of two main categories, continuous tone pictorial emulsions and graphic arts copyfilms. It was learned that the measurements separated the samples into the above mentioned categories based on response variables such as scattergram and its corresponding Fourier Transform. This method is proposed as a tool in emulsion design engineering or quality …

The Effect Of Development Temperature On Kodak Pr 10 Instant Print Product Using A Comparative System Modulation Transfer Function For Analysis, Jon E. Van Tassell
Theses
The effects of temperature of development upon the final image quality of Kodak PR lOr were investigated. Image quality was defined as a Modulation Transfer Function obtained using a Square Wave Log Periodic target for quantitative analysis. Analysis of Variance tables were used to separate experimental error from actual temperature related variability. With a confidence level of 99% the temperature of development was found to affect the Modulation Transfer Function of this product. With temperatures below 48 degrees the effect was greater than with temperatures above 78 degrees but not greater than 90 degrees. Also documented was a decrease in …
A Survey Of Radiographic Films To Determine Autoradiographic Image Intensification Capabilities, John Ross
A Survey Of Radiographic Films To Determine Autoradiographic Image Intensification Capabilities, John Ross
Theses
A survey of radiographic films to establish the best donor/receiver combination for use in the autoradiographic image intensification technique was studied. Underexposed images of a 16 step aluminum wedge and a resolution target were made with Kodak film types XG-1, XL-5, XV-2, NMC or DuPont Cronex film. The underexposed, developed and processed films were treated in a subtractive photographic reducer (mixture of potassium ferricyanide and sodium thiosulfate) prior to radioactivation with an alkaline solution of sulfur-35 thiourea. Autoradiographs of the radioactivated films were made. Both qualitative and quantitative evaluations of the intensified images and their corresponding characteristic D-Log Rel. H …
