Ethnic Identity, Acculturation Attitudes And Self-Esteem In Rural High School Students, Concetta Posella Dec 1998

Ethnic Identity, Acculturation Attitudes And Self-Esteem In Rural High School Students, Concetta Posella

Theses

The current study used questionnaires in order to survey a sample of rural high school students regarding their self-esteem, attitudes toward acculturation, and their sense of ethnic identity. Students' ratings of self-esteem were not related to their sense of ethnic or racial identity nor their generational status, or how far removed they are from their cultural background. However, when acculturation attitudes were examined, the results were somewhat unexpected. The students who endorsed integration, or the idea that immigrants should both maintain their cultural traditions and try to adapt to their new culture, reported higher levels of self-esteem and identified themselves …

Chinese Characters As Sources Of Design Of Furniture, Han-Lim Wee Dec 1998

Chinese Characters As Sources Of Design Of Furniture, Han-Lim Wee

Theses

This thesis is an exploration of possibilities of the translation of Chinese characters into furniture. It is not just the two dimensional image of the character that I wish to interpret into three dimensions, but I intend that the functions and uses of the furniture are to be the meaning of the word. The final pieces are intended to be recognized as to their meaning by anyone literate in Chinese character forms. Furniture that has both form and meaning will create new possibilities for furniture's role in the environment by having this extra dimension.

Studies On The Occurrence Of Fluoride In Some Food Samples, Taghreed Ali Abdullah Al-Habshi Dec 1998

Studies On The Occurrence Of Fluoride In Some Food Samples, Taghreed Ali Abdullah Al-Habshi

Theses

In recent years, the amount of fluoride in biological samples, drinking water and in fluoride containing food or feedstuffs has generated considerable interest. Hence the determination of fluoride is becoming increasingly important due to its implications for environmental health. Fluoride is considered to be amongst the most phytotoxic of the more common pollutants. In response to that extensive research has been made to improve the determination of trace amounts of fluoride through developing different analytical methods. The application of these various analytical methods for fluoride ion determination in water and food samples has gained an enormous interest.

Molecular & Physical Characterization Of Threonine Dehydrogenase From Serratia Marcescens, Michael Wetherell Dec 1998

Molecular & Physical Characterization Of Threonine Dehydrogenase From Serratia Marcescens, Michael Wetherell

Theses

Threonine dehydrogenase has been purified from Serretia marcescens 450 fold to obtain 1300 micrograms of enzyme from 15 grams of cells. The amino-terminus has been sequenced and places it in a class with medium chain alcohol dehydrogenases from both Z.mobilus and E.coli. The native enzyme is a dimer of 35.6 kD sub-units containing approximately 324 amino acids. The gene structure of the enzyme is dissimilar from that of the E.coli TDH and may represent a mutation of an alcohol dehydrogenase with possible preference to propanol.

Chromatographic Methods Development For The Charcterization Of Phytopharaceutical Materials, Melanie Levesque Dec 1998

Chromatographic Methods Development For The Charcterization Of Phytopharaceutical Materials, Melanie Levesque

Theses

The increased popularity of alternative medicine treatments has prompted resurgence in the use of traditional herbal remedies. Among this vast number of herbs, ginseng is purchased by a considerable number of consumers; especially three species: Panax ginseng, Panax quinquefolium, and Eleutherococcus senticosus. Many of the physiological effects claimed by ginseng manufacturers tend to mimic those of central nervous system stimulants. This led to the purpose of this research, which was to develop an HPLC chromatographic method in order to determine if any specific CNS stimulants are within ginseng supplements. Specifically we found a series of CNS stimulants, methylxanthines (caffeine, theophylline, …

Burnout Among Managed Care Clinicians, Dawn M. Waggoner Dec 1998

Burnout Among Managed Care Clinicians, Dawn M. Waggoner

Theses

Burnout is a pattern of emotional overload in which one feels overwhelmed by the demands imposed by others . Those individuals who do "people work" of some kind are the most vulnerable to burnout. The purpose of this study was to determine if there is a relationship between the level of burnout and the number of months case workers have worked at the same managed care company. Thirty-two case workers from one managed care company completed the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) to assess their current level of burnout. Data analysis run on all three subscales found that there was no …

A Homage To Beethoven Piano Concerto No.5 "Emperor", Young-Ji Shin

Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to explore my personal experience with the reciprocal relationships of the various fields of art. The media of art includes the fine arts, crafts, visual arts, theater, film, music, dance and literature - all genres commonly considered "the arts." These different fields are not isolated in and of themselves but rather have mutual connections amongst them. This thesis elucidates my concept of art as one. A vague fondness for the arts drew me to the Seoul Arts High School in 1987. I had a broad interest in art in general, and did not limit …

Characterization Of Kapton Polymer Containing An Inorganic Additive, Juan Betancourt Nov 1998

Characterization Of Kapton Polymer Containing An Inorganic Additive, Juan Betancourt

Theses

With a full space program in progress, new types of materials are needed for spacecraft construction. These materials need to be strong, have good thermal stability and be good insulators. One of the materials with these properties is Kapton, manufactured by Dupont. Being a polyimide, it provides these characteristics, and being quite stable to ultraviolet light makes it the best of its kind for space use. The only concern is that, at the altitudes where earth observing spacecrafts orbit the earth, high concentrations of monoatomic oxygen (AO) react with the organic material and produce CO and H20. In an attempt …

A Study Of Water Pick-Up Rates And Their Effects On Ink Rheology, Ink Strength, Ink Dryback And Ink Rub-Off, Richard Wright

Theses

It has been thought that the water pick-up rate and capacity of an ink may have a profound affect on the press performance of an ink. As the water content of ink changes so do the Theological characteristics of the ink and this effects ink performance attributes such as ink transfer, drying , rub resistance, set-off and strength. An emulsification curve can shed some light on how ink might perform on a press but this alone is not enough. The objective of this thesis research was to study the interaction of fountain solution and ink as used in the printing …

The Study Of Circumannular Orbital Interactions In The Imine Derivatives Of 2,2,4,4-Tetramethyl-1,3-Cyclobutanedione, Arati Naik Nov 1998

The Study Of Circumannular Orbital Interactions In The Imine Derivatives Of 2,2,4,4-Tetramethyl-1,3-Cyclobutanedione, Arati Naik

Theses

The title compounds possess unusual orbital interactions. A p-pi type interaction which incorporates both a transannular and circumannular component and a non-bonding circumannular interaction from the lone electron pairs on the opposite ends of the ring interacting via the ring carbon p-orbitals of proper symmetry. Variable temperature NMR was employed to examine the effect of the non-bonding interaction of inversion through nitrogen on the imine chromophore. A plot of In k vs 1/T allowed for the determination of Ea from the slope and the free energy of activation AG was calculated from the coalescence temperature. The magnitude of long range …

Study Of Microwave Annealing Effects On Polymer Crystallization, Junmei Ji Nov 1998

Study Of Microwave Annealing Effects On Polymer Crystallization, Junmei Ji

Theses

In this project, the effect of melt annealing on the crystallization of poly(ethylene oxide), (PEO), was studied by comparing thermal annealing to microwave annealing. After the subsequent controlled crystallization, the crystalline morphology of films was characterized by Polarizing Light Microscopy (PLM); the melting curves for both films and bulk samples were measured by Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). These measurements revealed significant differences between microwave and thermally annealed samples. We propose that microwave annealing has a "quantum on polymer crystallization. The difference in morphology cannot be explained by a change in the temperature profile of the two annealing methods. By investigating …

Formulating A Service Recovery Package For The Airline Industry In Taiwan, Yung-Shine Yang Nov 1998

Formulating A Service Recovery Package For The Airline Industry In Taiwan, Yung-Shine Yang

Theses

Stated simply, the service sector is an industry with respect to human being. Nearly each service transaction must be involved with people, including both consumers and frontline employees. This means that in a service firm, customers as well as frontline employees should be regarded as the most invaluable assets. Unfortunately, in Taiwan nowadays numerous service organizations such as certain airlines always lay special emphasis on stockholders' interests instead of clients' benefits. Maybe this can help explain why some service busine e has the inability to do th1ngs right the second time while they sometimes do things wrong the first time. …

The Effects Of The Architectural Design, Replacement Algorithm, And Size Parameters Of Cache Memory In Uniprocessor Computer Systems, Eric Berzofsky Nov 1998

The Effects Of The Architectural Design, Replacement Algorithm, And Size Parameters Of Cache Memory In Uniprocessor Computer Systems, Eric Berzofsky

Theses

To investigate the effects of cache coherency on multiprocessors, it is helpful to first explore coherency issues within uniprocessors, working with a small part of a big problem instead of attacking the big problem from the start. This thesis will investigate the design and implementation of three different cache designs, varying the mapping strategy, replacement algorithm, and size parameters to determine the effects each have on the cache miss ratio, coherency, and average memory access time. VHDL is used to create software models of each cache design investigated, so that parameter values can be easily changed, and so that no …

Design And Implementation Of A Dsp Based Mpeg-1 Audio Encoder, Eric Hoekstra Oct 1998

Design And Implementation Of A Dsp Based Mpeg-1 Audio Encoder, Eric Hoekstra

Theses

The speed of current PCs enables them to decode and play an MPEG bitstream in real time. The encoding process, however, cannot be done in real-time. The purpose of this thesis is to produce a low-cost real-time Digital Signal Processor (DSP) implementation of an MPEG encoder. The DSP will provide an MPEG bitstream to the PC that can be saved to disk. The input to the DSP will be an analog audio signal. A codec provides the DSP with 16-bit samples of the signal. The DSP compresses these 16-bit samples using MPEG-1 layer 1 compression. Then it formats the compressed …

Adaptive Detection Of Pn-Spread Psk Waveforms In Hf Atmospheric Noise, M. A. Wadsworth Oct 1998

Adaptive Detection Of Pn-Spread Psk Waveforms In Hf Atmospheric Noise, M. A. Wadsworth

Theses

The purpose of this work is to investigate optimal methods for the detection of short duration (burst) PN-spread PSK waveforms in HF atmospheric noise. As has been shown, the optimal detector for any waveform in Gaussian background noise is a matched filter. However, HF atmospheric noise is non-Gaussian, necessitating alternate detector designs. A theoretical approach to an alternate detector design is taken, based on radar clutter modeling techniques and concepts from detection theory. The industry standard model for HF atmospheric noise is contained in COR Report 322-3 (1986). The CCLR 322 noise model is a graphical, empirical model based on …

Fraction Of Grains Development Measured By Electrolytic Grain Size Analyzer, Zhenhuan Wen Oct 1998

Fraction Of Grains Development Measured By Electrolytic Grain Size Analyzer, Zhenhuan Wen

Theses

Quantum sensitivity is an important emulsion property for photographic image formation and is usually calculated from a fraction of grains developable vs. log exposure (F-log E) curve. In this thesis, a new method, the electrolytic grain-size analyzer (EGSA) technique has been developed that will allow one to obtain F-log E curves for each grain size class in polydisperse emulsions. The correctness of the F-log E curve obtained by this new method has been examined by comparing the F-log E curve with that calculated from the normalized D-log E curve in the case of monodisperse emulsions. The problems in EGSA measurement, …
