Michael V. Disalle In Ohio Politics: 1950-1962, Diana Draur

Student Work

Ohio, an agricultural and industrial state, is basically a conservative Republican state. Yet in 1958, Michael V. DiSalle, a liberal Democrat who had been closely associated with President Harry Truman's Fair Deal, was elected governor for the first four-year term legislated in the history of the state. Two years earlier the Ohio newspapermen at their gridiron show "buried" Mike DiSalle because he had lost three previous statewide elections, one for Governor and two for the United States Senate. These men had not studied the history of Ohio politics. This thesis plans to discuss the circumstances and actions that made DiSalle's …

American Policy Toward The Defense Of Formosa And The Offshore Islands, 1954-1955, Donald H. Chang

Student Work

The American attitude toward the defense of Formosa and the offshore islands during the Quemoy crisis that erupted in September 1954 was intertwined with American policy toward China in general and the Nationalist Government in Formosa in particular. The United States had tried to stay out of the civil conflict between the Nationalists and the Communists. Yet the sequence of events that developed in the Far East forced the United States to take a position in favor of the Nationalists on Formosa. The American policy toward Formosa, although it ran counter to the Communists, was not fully identified with the …

The Great Debate: Truman's Decision To Deploy American Ground Forces To Europe, 1950-1951, Gary L. Ruppert

Student Work

Following World War II the United States Government made world commitments which were no less than revolutionary. Sooner or later President Harry S. Truman had to come to a showdown with his critics, for the conservatives and pre-World War II isolationists never readily accepted America's new position in world affairs. As frustration mounted, right wing elements of the Republican Party combined with a few dissident Democrats to challenge the Administration in its handling of foreign affairs. The fall of China followed a short time later by aggression in Korea solidified the Truman critics and opened what amounted to a major …

The New Deal In Dawson County, Nebraska, Jerold L. Simmons Jun 1967

The New Deal In Dawson County, Nebraska, Jerold L. Simmons

Student Work

The election of Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1932 reflected a major change in the political thinking of the American people. Although this change was largely brought about by the economic difficulties of the 1930's, the success and popularity of the Roosevelt Administration solidified this change, forming among certain interest groups an almost permanent New Deal philosophy. The farmers of the Great Plains, particularly those of Nebraska, did not follow the pattern set by other economic groups. Even though they gave Roosevelt overwhelming support in 1932 and generally approved of the economic benefits of the New Deal farm program, by 1940 …
