Effective Use Of Microcomputers For Elementary Social Studies, Steven Richard Hanks Dec 1984

Effective Use Of Microcomputers For Elementary Social Studies, Steven Richard Hanks

Student Work

The use of computers in the classroom is still a very new development in education. In fact, computers themselves have been around only for about thirty-five years. The incredible growth in the technology of computers is almost impossible to fathom. Modern computers are not only a faster and "smarter," they are smaller and cheaper. Shane (1982) pointed out that if a Rolls Royce had become as cost effective as computers and had its price reduced accordingly, it would cost only three dollars.

The Fantastiks, Donna L. Cornelius Dec 1984

The Fantastiks, Donna L. Cornelius

Student Work

I feel that it is important to remain flexible in the casting of this show with regard to the desired sex of certain characters. Dr. Paterson will be casting Terra Nova, a predominately male show, from the same auditions as The Fantasticks and the rehearsal periods are somewhat concurrent. I feel that the roles of the two fathers are primarily that of parents and, therefore, can as easily be filled by women--mothers- and fulfill the same function in the script. Another option is to cast a father and a mother, although, I think that the romantic implications with the young …

The One And Only Jesse Starr, Barbee Kay Davis Dec 1984

The One And Only Jesse Starr, Barbee Kay Davis

Student Work

Jesse and the Bandit Queen is a funny, entertaining and touching look at the difference between the myth and the legend of desperado Jesse James in the infamous Belle Starr. Jesse was transformed into legend through his daring bank robberies, especially his unsuccessful attempt in Northfield, Minn. Belle, heroine of the lurid dime novels of the Old West, was often billed as the female Jesse James.

It was discovered by Brefeld in 1869. However, the cellular slime mold most widely used in developmental research today is Dictyostelium discoideum, discovered by Raper in 1935.

The Impact Of Assigned, Conflicting Goals On Task Performance, Daniel P. Whitenak Dec 1984

The Impact Of Assigned, Conflicting Goals On Task Performance, Daniel P. Whitenak

Student Work

Previous research has strongly supported Locke's theory of goal-setting: given specific, difficult, accepted goals with proper feedback, individual performance w ill improve relative to others not given a goal. A possible exception to this theory might be the setting of goals that conflict or require widely different strategies for task completion. The present study employed a 2 x 2 factorial design (presence/absence of a quantity and a quality goal) to investigate the impact of conflicting goals on task performance. Results showed that assigned, conflicting goals do not provide an exception to the goal-setting/performance relationship since significan t main effects were …

External Debt Position, Export Performance, And Economic Growth In Developing Countries: The Case Of Korea, O. Chang Kwon

Student Work

Most developing countries have been claiming that a massive inflow of resources from the North is needed to stimulate more rapid economic development and eradicate widespread poverty in the South. Some industrialized countries, however, have rejected this claim and instead emphasize the importance of self-help and well-functioning market mechanisms to promote development.

Student Work

In 1971 a study was conducted for the purpose of assessing the benefits of possible reorganization of the Carson-Macedonia, Oakland and Treynor Community School Districts. In this study the school enrollments were studied for the years 1964-1965 through the 1970-1971 school year and enrollment projections were made through the 1974-1975 school year. The enrollments were projected for each school district and were combined into one larger configuration for its implications for staffing, class offerings, busing, facilities and financial needs.

The Theory Of Transcendence A Movement In The Chain Of Being Toward The Good, Joanne L. Kolenda Aug 1984

The Theory Of Transcendence A Movement In The Chain Of Being Toward The Good, Joanne L. Kolenda

Student Work

The theory of transcendence is an examination of the nature of man, dual material/spiritual creature, and of his cosmic position on the Great Chain of Being, from which position he may move in the perfectibility of order toward an achievement of the good. Occupying a mid-point in the hierarchical spiral toward Omega, man may aspire to perfect himself according to his nature in the intrinsic orders of both virtue and rationality.

The Pollination Ecology Of Asclepius Incarnata L. Subsp. Incarnata., Thomas S. Brotherton

Student Work

The pollination ecology of Asclepias incarnata L. subsp. incarnata was studied at three sites in eastern Nebraska and one in western Iowa. A. incarnata was shown to be visited by many species of insects. A few Hymenoptera and Lepidoptera served as efficient pollinators, while the other visitors were primarily nectar thieves. On disturbed sites, Megabombus pennsylvanicus (DeGeer) was the prevalent pollinator, along with Apis mellifera L., Pyrobombus griseocollis (DeGeer), and two species of Sphecinae. On undisturbed sites, A. incarnata was found in much smaller populations and was pollinated by Papilio glaucus L., Danaus plexippus (L.), Epargyreus clarus (Cramer) and other …

The Analyses And Comparison Of Five Elementary Spelling Programs, Richard Hindalong Aug 1984

The Analyses And Comparison Of Five Elementary Spelling Programs, Richard Hindalong

Student Work

Spelling is one of the principal components of any elementary school program of language arts or English. Educationally, as well as socially, poor spelling is generally considered a sign of illiteracy. Whether this is justified or not, people do raise conclusions about a person's education and intelligence on the evidence of his/her spelling abilities. Therefore, strong spelling programs continue to be desired as an integral part of an elementary school curriculum.

A Comparative Study Of Elementary School Students With Respect To Their Creative And Technical Writing Skills, Karen Sweeney Aug 1984

A Comparative Study Of Elementary School Students With Respect To Their Creative And Technical Writing Skills, Karen Sweeney

Student Work

The Nation at Risk challenges educators in all areas of curriculum. We have heard of apparent deficiency in our reading and writing curriculum through such reports as "Why Johnny Can't Read" and "Why Johnny Can't Write". These items were brought to our attention in the book by Rudolph Flesh called Why Johnny Can't Read in 1955. (1) The concepts still get attention today. A further indictment was that of former Creighton University student and basketball player, Kevin Ross, who claimed that he went through four years of college without the ability to read and write at a level where he …

The Influence Of Supervisor Credibility, Sex Of Supervisor, And Sex Of Subject On Feedback Acceptance, Tracy Innaurato Aug 1984

The Influence Of Supervisor Credibility, Sex Of Supervisor, And Sex Of Subject On Feedback Acceptance, Tracy Innaurato

Student Work

Feedback has often been used as a means of improving employee performance. It is generally believed that feedback has a positive influence on performance, but little is known about the factos that influence acceptance of feedback (Ilgen, Fisher, & Tayler, 1979). The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of supervisor credibility, sex of supervisor, and sex of subject on feedback acceptance. Subjects read a description of either a male or female supervisor, and the credibility of the supervisor was manipulated in these descriptions. Subjects listened to a taped feedback session, and then responded to a questionnaire developed …

An Appraisal Of The Revised Procedure For Teacher Evaluation In The Woodbine Public High School, Patrick W. Morgan

Student Work

The public has long expressed a desire to improve education. In the past year there have been several reports such as A Nation at Risk and High School: An Agenda for Action, indicating various problem areas that need the attention of the public and educators nation wide. These reports have been submitted by federal and state commissions, education committees, and "knowledgable" individuals. The areas of concern and the recommendations include additional funding for salaries, supplies, materials, curriculum revision, higher standards of achievement, lengthening the school day and the school year, as well as other suggestions and ideas. Among the recommendations …

Bungalow Neighborhoods Of North Omaha., Patrick A. Peters Jul 1984

Bungalow Neighborhoods Of North Omaha., Patrick A. Peters

Student Work

Omaha, Nebraska, not unlike numerous other towns and cities throughout the United States, experienced a period of tremendous growth during the early decades of this century. Changes in industrial technology, an increasing work force, and innovative intra-urban transportation networks combined to bring a new look to the city. The bungalow-style house is one of many house styles which, in identifying its stylistic elements, location, and distribution within a city, offers insight into urban growth and elements of popular taste. Studying the single-family home generates information which may help guide geographers to the essence of the urban landscape, both past and …

Introduction: The state of Nebraska has an area of 76,612 square miles and is divided into thirteen distinct physiographic regions (Figure 1). In recent years, attention has been focused upon one particular portion of the Central Loess Plains—the “rainbasin area” or, as it is sometimes called, the “rainwater basin”.

Competency Based Training To Facilitate Improved Quality Interaction Between Parents And Their Handicapped Infants And Preschoolers, Jeanette A. Lengemann Jul 1984

Competency Based Training To Facilitate Improved Quality Interaction Between Parents And Their Handicapped Infants And Preschoolers, Jeanette A. Lengemann

Student Work

A widely accepted characteristic of early intervention programs for handicapped infants and young children is the active involvement of the child's parents. Although the actual extent of parental involvement varies with programs, typically parents are assuming the role of instructor or presenter of developmentally based activities seeking to improve the skill levels of their developmentally delayed children. Simeonsson, Cooper and Scheiner, (1932) reviewed 27 programs focusing on intervention with "biologically impaired" infants and young children. Seventy percent of those programs specified a role for parents within the intervention for their children. The value of parent involvement is thought to be …

An Analysis Of The Source Of Competencies Acquired By Principals In The Omaha Public Schools, Lennard N. Hansen

Student Work

Questions are often asked about the extent and nature of qualifications needed to become an effective school principal. Are there certain personal qualifications which help a principal operate effectively and implement change within his or her school? A person looking toward possible future administrative duties, or a current school administrator is likely concerned with effective decision making and problem solving within a framework of expectations from superiors, subordinates, the public and government funding sources.

Student Work

With the beginning of the 1983-84 school year, the Science Department Faculty at Central Junior High in Millard, Nebraska, initiated a new "Investigative Science" course. The Investigative Science course was designed to challenge students who possessed high interest in science, exhibited creativity, and demonstrated intellectual capacity. However, it was possible for a student with very high achievement scores not to be selected if he had little interest in science. During the selection process only a limited number of students .were chosen and although many students achieved the minimum requirements, only the brightest had the opportunity to take the new course.

The Relative Impact Of Environmental Factors On The Welfare Policies Of Some American States: A Causal Analysis, Ihemelam Joshua Uhiara Jul 1984

The Relative Impact Of Environmental Factors On The Welfare Policies Of Some American States: A Causal Analysis, Ihemelam Joshua Uhiara

Student Work

Public policy in the American states has attracted the attention of an increasing number of political scientists in recent times. Many and varied kinds of studies have been done to determine the relationships between factors in the political environments of American states and the content of the public policies of these states. The results of these studies vary as do the studies themselves. More often than not, the findings contradict each other. One such contradiction is observed in the findings of studies on the relationship between economic and political factors within the political environment and state public policy. Some studies …

An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Processing Rate And Memory Span In Learning Disabled Children, Jeffrey Wayne Gray Jul 1984

An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Processing Rate And Memory Span In Learning Disabled Children, Jeffrey Wayne Gray

Student Work

Slow rate of information processing has been offered as an explanation for the short-term memory problems of learning and/or reading disabled children (e.g., Spring & Capps, 1974). The present investigation used an item identification task and a memory span task to determine whether, when learning and/or reading disabled and non-disabled children are equated with regard to the speed with which they process information, their measured memory spans are also equal. It was hypothesized that the observed memory span differences would be eliminated by equating the two groups on a measure of processing rate.

A Remote-Sensing Analysis Of Selected Wetlands Within The Nebraska Sandhills Region., Jeffrey S. Linden May 1984

A Remote-Sensing Analysis Of Selected Wetlands Within The Nebraska Sandhills Region., Jeffrey S. Linden

Student Work

Remote-sensing techniques were utilized to investigate selected wetland environments in the Nebraska Sandhills. The intent was to determine which remote-sensing technique might prove most effective in delineating three general classes of wetlands, i.e., open water, marsh, and subirrigated meadow. Two specific techniques were utilized in the research, namely the computer classification of Landsat digital data derived from computer compatible tapes and the video-digitization and classification of color-infrared aerial photography. As a result of comparative analysis of both systems, it was felt that the use of Landsat digital data is the optimum mechanism for classifying and mapping for three general wetland …

In 1957 enrollment in the Papillion-LaVista School District was less than 400 students. BY 1960 it was 691, and by 1966 there were 2223 students enrolled. At that time there was one junior-senior high school for the district. With the state of the 1981-82 school year, over 5900 students were enrolled in the Papillion-LaVista District. There is one senior high school and two junior highs. Also, the population of the school district now exceeds 2500 people. The two communities of Papillion and LaVista have changed from small rural communities to suburban communities with a much wider range of public concerns …

Plasma Catecholamine And Ascorbic Acid Levels In Smokers And Nonsmokers As A Function Of Stress, Audrey A. Wickiser May 1984

Plasma Catecholamine And Ascorbic Acid Levels In Smokers And Nonsmokers As A Function Of Stress, Audrey A. Wickiser

Student Work

Research on the relationship between the role of stress and blood catecholamine levels began in the early 60's. Studies since that time have shown that both physical and psychological stressors can cause an increase in the circulating levels of catecholamines. Epinephrine and norepinephrine are the catecholamines most implicated as being affected by stress. The results have not been clear as to whether the two catecholamines respond differentially to physical and psychological stress. Epinephrine secretion appears to increase in response to anxiety while norepinephrine may be related to aggression.

Student Work

Political leaders have long been aware that their success or failure depends directly on the mood of the voting populace. Thus, it was natural for these political leaders to employ public relations practitioners to not only deter mine the mood of the citizenry, but in some cases to help improve it. But in 1913, because of the broad criticism of 19 propaganda" in government, "publicity agents" were prohibited from being employed anywhere in any of the executive agencies unless authorized by Congress. The result of this act was the evasive hiring of publicity experts under such titles as "Director of …

Some Relationships Between Student Curriculum Choices And Approximation Of School Goals, William F. Coker Apr 1984

Some Relationships Between Student Curriculum Choices And Approximation Of School Goals, William F. Coker

Student Work

In 1642, a Massachusetts law was passed which contained what was probably the first list of educational goals in colonial America. According to this list, the child was to learn to read, to understand and obey the laws of the country, and to understand and live by Christian principles. It is interesting to note that these goals were stated as duties of the parents, since public schools were not required by law (Johanningmeier, 1980). Since that time, many different lists of educational goals have been developed. In general, these goals have been based on tradition, politics, and religious beliefs rather …

A Model For Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Mainstreaming., Yvonne Crockett Apr 1984

A Model For Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Mainstreaming., Yvonne Crockett

Student Work

Years ago it was a common and accepted practice to segregate handicapped students from their nondisabled classmates. It was presumed that handicapped youngsters needed a sheltered segregated environment in order to make satisfactory progress in school. Handicapped students were given a special curriculum and social contact with their school peers was limited (Dunn, 1968). However, since the 1960's there has been a trend towards moving handicapped children from segregated classrooms into regular class settings. This trend gained momentum which led to the passage of the federal mandate Public Law 94 142 which stated that handicapped individuals should not be inappropriately …

A Model For The Development Of An Industrial Training Program, Jimmy D. Perry Apr 1984

A Model For The Development Of An Industrial Training Program, Jimmy D. Perry

Student Work

The planning and development of an industrail training program is a complex undertaking. The purpose of this paper is to simplify the complexity of the process into discrete procedures and to present a practical model for the training director to use to accomplish the task in an efficient and effective manner. The resulting model should be easily adapted to meet the requirements of any program. It is to be assumed that modification of any or all parts of the model may be made to meet individual program needs.
