Personality Correlates Of Reticent And Nonreticent High School Students, Nancy Adele Mohrlock Dec 1973

Personality Correlates Of Reticent And Nonreticent High School Students, Nancy Adele Mohrlock

Student Work

The development of communication skills is vital to socialization in the classroom and to personality development. Petty and Starkey (1966) suggest that language is the greatest force for socialization that exists and at the same time is the most potent single factor in the development of individuality. Rosenberg and Coopersmith (1965, 1967) showed that a person's verbal behavior will influence others ’ attitudes toward him, while Mead (1934) indicated that an individual’s behavior is affected by the kind of image that he has of himself. This image comes largely from the individual's perceptions of o thers’ attitudes toward himself until …

The Negro Landholder Of Georgia And His White Counterpart, 1860-1900, Richard L. Parks

Student Work

History, for any generation of historians, will be different from the history written by earlier generations of historians. Events, as well as obscure people who have been ignored by earlier historians, now are beginning to receive the attention they deserve. The history of the Negro in the United States is one of those previously obscure subjects. Individuals seeking information or understanding about the historical role of the Negro in the United States seek special courses or special information. General works in American history deal almost exclusively with white Americans. It has only been with the increasing interest about the Negro …

Common Carrier Catv: Technological, Regulatory, And Economic Aspects, Pauline E. Henderson

Student Work

Electronic communication remained captive of wire for more than a half century before a technique could be found to set it free. A major breakthrough in electronic communication occurred in 1873 when James Clerk-Maxwell published A Treatise on Electricity & Magnetism in which he established the theory of electromagnetic energy, supported by mathematical proofs and based on observation of visible light. Within a decade experiments conducted by Heinrich Hertz which confirmed Maxwell’s concepts served as the scientific basis for the first radio transmissions. Radio telephone instruments were perfected by the inventor Guglielmo Marconi which stimulated experiments in similar areas of …

A History And Development Of Omaha Parochial Schools, Charus Komutdang

Student Work

To understand any system of education, one must understand its history and development. Educational systems must be based on the culture and needs of the people as well as the economic and social conditions of their country. No educational institution can adopt the system of any other. Nevertheless, the struggles and successes of other school systems may be helpful in solving the problems of a given school system.

Trait Anxiety, Sensation Seeking, Internal-External Locus Of Control In Male And Female Delinquents And Non-Delinquents, Steve Sherrets

Student Work

Personality research with delinquents has largely produced inconclusive and inconsistent results. Peterson, Quay and Cameron (1959) have pointed out that:

Most investigations of personality factors in crime and delinquency have begun with a legally defined sample of offenders, proceeded with comparisons between that group and a more or less carefully matched group of non-offenders, and ended with less ambiguous results.

Student Work

The largest member of the tree dwelling North American squirrels is the Fox Squirrel (Sciurus niger Linnaeus). This species inhabits the eastern half of the contiguous United States. Its normal habitat is open woodland though the Fox Squirrel along with the Grey Squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis Linnaeus) may be found in some thickly wooded areas. The Fox Squirrel has extended its range farther west in response to the large number of trees that have been planted on the former prairie of the great plains (Yeager, 1959). The range of the Fox Squirrel is plotted in Appendix I, Figure 1 after Hal …

Cognitive Differentiation And Trait Anxiety As A Function Of Conceptual Level, George T. Brennan Aug 1973

Cognitive Differentiation And Trait Anxiety As A Function Of Conceptual Level, George T. Brennan

Student Work

In recent years, there has been an increasing interest among personality investigators in a cognitive orientation to personality. Several theorists and researchers have begun to relate the study of cognition and "cognitive structures" to personality dynamics (Suedfield, 1971) and to personality development (Bieri, 1966). Suedfield

Due to the feminist movement, male-female communication has become a topic of increased interest, especially in the area of nonverbal communication. Julius Fast (1970) made 51 body language” a household phrase, for better or for worse. But the study of nonverbal behavior has.only recently become a serious subject of research. As Randall Harrison (l97l) put it, We have important problems to solve. In short, I see us on the threshold of an exciting era of research in nonverbal communication (p. 2).”

The Effects Of Participation In Goal Setting And Methods Selection, James G. Jones

Student Work

Eighty undergraduate students who were enrolled in introductory psychology classes were used to determine the effects which participation in decision-making on a goal directed task has on performance and attitudes. The Ss were randomly assigned to one of four treatment groups, defined by type of participation in decision-making. The Ss were either permitted to select or were assigned performance goals and were either permitted to select or were assigned a sequence in which to perform an arithmetic task.

The results of the study suggest that type of participation in decision-making can under certain circumstances have significant effects on performance attitudes …

The Relation Of Visual Fixation And Pursuit To Posture In Four Month Infants, Nancy M. Fieber Aug 1973

The Relation Of Visual Fixation And Pursuit To Posture In Four Month Infants, Nancy M. Fieber

Student Work

The frozen posture of a young child as he visually attends to something of interest, or the very young infantTs wide open eyes and mouth as he fixes on a stimulus, illustrate dramatically the close relationship between the visual system and the total action system. The two appear to be inseparable and interdependent.

When vision is impaired, control of posture may be impaired as evidenced by the typical delay in head righting in prone and all-fours postures of the blind infant. (Gesell and Amatruda, 1941; Gesell et al, 1949) In other children with severe visual impairment a peculiar head posture …

The Agricultural Marketing Act Of 1929: A Study Of The Legislative Process, Donald L. Wilson

Student Work

On June 15, 1929, President Herbert Hoover signed the Agricultural Marketing Act into law bringing to a close eight years of intensive work by many people interested in the farm problem. Thus, the President had redeemed a campaign pledge to call a special session of Congress and secure a far-reaching piece of farm legislation. The course of agricultural relief, from its origin in the farm depression to the enaction of the new law, was influenced by practical politicians, professional farm representatives, and economic theorists. Each group had an impact on the final solution.

The present study took place during the spring and summer of 1971 at a thoroughbred horse racing track in a Midwestern city. The racing meet lasted for nine weeks, from late April to early July. Although I have drawn from other sources which are not directly connected to this particular racing meet, the bulk of the information included in this account comes direc tly from my experiences as a participant observer at this particular racing meet. For purposes of clarity I have named this track YA-WET-AG.

A Comparative Analysis Of Public Education And Its Objectives In Nigeria And In The United States, Bassey Idiong Aug 1973

A Comparative Analysis Of Public Education And Its Objectives In Nigeria And In The United States, Bassey Idiong

Student Work

The education of the young has been one of the most pertinent concerns of man and woman in Nigeria. For centuries, famous men and women have expressed opinions or philosophized copiously on the objective of public education in the country. The public education and its objectives in Nigeria is of much concern when it is compared to that of the United State. There are different problems in the areas noted by most educationists; too little money for education, outdated curricula, and not enough trained teachers. It is not that Nigerian schools fail to achieve their stated purposes, but they are …

The Present And Future Status Of Inservice Programs In The Omaha Area Secondary Schools, Phoebe Jane Herbster

Student Work

Of the multitude of terms used to categorize American society today, perhaps the least controversial is "change". The pace and extent of this change in recent decades has touched all institutions and facets of this society. Among the most important of these institutions are the educational systems since it is their responsibility to prepare new generations for their roles in this society. The response of the educational system to the need for change has manifested itself in many ways. New curriculum program, new instructional techniques, new administration organizations, new applications of technology are all part of the efforts of education …

A Rhetorical Analysis Of The Address Of Governor George C Wallace Delivered During The Third-Party State Convention Held In Omaha, Nebraska, On March 4, 1968, Jean Elkon

Student Work

When George Corley Wallace, twice governor of Alabama and militant advocate for states’ rights and segregation, collected enough signatures to put his American Independent Party on the 1968 ballot for the Presidential race, there emerged on the political scene what many people called a phenomenon, and extraordinary happening or circumstance. It appeared that for a time many observers had considered him only a faintly comical entry. But now George Wallace became a rival who threatened to jostle all political candidates. Nationwide polls certified him as a possible spoiler, and more was his “pull” that tripled his appeal outside the South. …

Directing Thesis: "Juno And The Paycock", Mary Beth Martin Aug 1973

Directing Thesis: "Juno And The Paycock", Mary Beth Martin

Student Work

The people are the theater. Nature sets the scene, and man plays his part through the challenging scenes of seed-time and harvest, in the cold days when the Frost comes and the keen windows blow. It is from the things manifested in people's life--their love, joy, hatred, malice, envy, generosity, passion, courage, and fear--that the trust playwrights weave their somber and gay patterns of action and dialogue. The above statement appears in an article by Sean O’Casey written more than 20 years after his first successful play, The Shadow of a Gunman, was produced at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin. …

An Experimental Study Of The Impact Of Clinical Psychodiagnosis, Diagnostic Concept And Dogmatism On The Perception Of Psychopathology., Jane Ellen Stilwell Smith

Student Work

The subject of psychiatric diagnosis and the ramifications of a person being labeled as "mentally ill" has attracted increased attention in the past decade. Personal testimony from psychiatric patients about the difficulty in securing employment, returning to familiar abodes, and re-entering a scholastic environment because of rejection by "normal" society, has been documented in confidential case files, witnessed by friends and relatives, and published for lay consumption (Rubin, 1960; Salinger, 1951; and Green, 1964). Other literature has been devoted to the apparently negative psychological aspects of being an in-patient in a mental institution (Caudwill, 1958; Goffman, 1961; and Gordon, 1971). …

Childrearing Correlates Of The Repression-Sensitization Dimension, Nancy W. Perry Jul 1973

Childrearing Correlates Of The Repression-Sensitization Dimension, Nancy W. Perry

Student Work

The repression-sensitization (R-S) dimension (Byrne, 1964) assumes that individuals may be placed along a continuum according to their characteristic responses to threatening stimuli. At the repression pole are individuals whose responses purportedly include repression, suppression, and denial (avoiding behaviors), while at the sensitizing pole are persons whose responses allegedly include intei lectualization, rationalization, and obsessive-compulsive ideation (approach behaviors).

Trait Anxiety, Leadership And Group-Induced Decision Change, Chester D. Gaston Jul 1973

Trait Anxiety, Leadership And Group-Induced Decision Change, Chester D. Gaston

Student Work

The twelve item Choice Dilemmas Questionnaire (CDQ) developed by Kogan and Wallach (1964) has been used extensively for investigating individual and group decision-making processes. Each item presents a hypothetical life situation in which the central character must choose between two courses of action, one of which is more risky than the other but also more rewarding if successful. For each situation the Sis must select the lowest probability of success they would accept before recommending that the potentially more rewarding (and risky) alternative be chosen. After Ss have made their private individual choices, a group is formed and each item …

Creativity And Its Relationship To The Origin-Pawn Variable: A Study Into The Increment And Decrement Of Creativity And Its Concomitant Relationship To 0 -P As A Function Of Classroom Climate, Dennis Wood Jul 1973

Creativity And Its Relationship To The Origin-Pawn Variable: A Study Into The Increment And Decrement Of Creativity And Its Concomitant Relationship To 0 -P As A Function Of Classroom Climate, Dennis Wood

Student Work

Creativity has been approached and studied from many different viewpoints. A number of the studies in this area are conflicting, while others are only speculative. Still, some of these discussions shed light on this very elusive variable. Collectively, these studies and discussions of creativity suggest:
1) that the creative individual has some personality characteristics, apart from intelligence per se, which allow him to make unusually good use of his native abilities in the solution of problems and in the living of every day life (Gardner, 196k, p. 22; c.f. also: Barron, 1963; Maslow, 1959; May 1959; Rogers, 1961);
2) that …

The Basuto Rebellion, Civil War And Reconstruction, 1880-1884, Douglas Gene Kagan Jul 1973

The Basuto Rebellion, Civil War And Reconstruction, 1880-1884, Douglas Gene Kagan

Student Work

The author embarked on this study because most accounts of this Basuto crisis do not uncover and properly interpret the events which transpired. Historical thought on the British Empire and Commonwealth in recent years has shifted from dissemination of the "civilize the despicable and barbarous native with a gun or a Bible for the glory of the glory of the Empire" line of thought to a circulation of the "destruction of the pure and innocent native tribes by the gluttonous and malignant spread of European civilization" line of reasoning. This work, it is hoped, will illustrate the faillacies in both …

Reservoir And Reservation: The Oahe Dam And The Cheyenne River Sioux, Michael L. Lawson Jul 1973

Reservoir And Reservation: The Oahe Dam And The Cheyenne River Sioux, Michael L. Lawson

Student Work

In order to control floods and provide irrigation, hydroelectric power, and other benefits, the federal government has in recent years built a large number of dams on the nation's major rivers. Because of the destruction of scenic values and natural resources caused by the construction of these dam projects and the necessary displacement of those people unfortunate enough to live within the reservoir areas, the neccity of these dams has often been questioned. With a view only toward the larger features and results of dam construction, those people who have supported these massive prjects have often failed to realize that …

Toward A New Dimension In The Study Of Political Behavior: An Analysis Of Biopolitical Theory And Quantitative Methodology As An Approach To The Study Of Politics, Douglas Martin Wiig Jul 1973

Toward A New Dimension In The Study Of Political Behavior: An Analysis Of Biopolitical Theory And Quantitative Methodology As An Approach To The Study Of Politics, Douglas Martin Wiig

Student Work

In recent years, a number of popular books have contributed to an awareness of apparent similarities between human behavior and the behavior of other animals. Writers such as Robert Ardery, Desmond Morris and Konrad Lorenz have seemingly taken a great leap of faith when drawing their comparisons between observed non-human behavior and the behavior of Homo Sapiens. As a result of the controversy generated by such writings, few have realized or considered the true utility of a bioevolutionary approach for the social sciences. In the past few years, however, Peter Corning, James Davies, Thomas Thorson, and others have speculated on …

Student Work

This study deals with the environmental condition of winter and the effect it has on pond life. Special emphasis is given to pond fish. Levi Carter Lagoon is located at 13th and Carter Lake Boulevard in Omaha, Nebraska. It is fed by a storm sewer and collects most of its water from street drainage so it is not a typical pond. It empties into Carter Lake via a culvert. Fifty years ago the pond was the northwest bank of Carter Lake and prior to 1877 held waters from the Missouri River. The pond is approximately 200 meters long and 40 …

The 1905 Bloody Sunday Massacre: American Reactions, Judy M. Westrate Jun 1973

The 1905 Bloody Sunday Massacre: American Reactions, Judy M. Westrate

Student Work

On January 22, 1905 in St. Petersburg, Russia a crowd of workingmen gathered at the Nevsky Prospect, in the Palace Square, and on the other avenues of St. Petersburg. This crowd, led by Father George Gapon, was on a mission to talk to the Czar — their "Little Father” — because their factory employers had refused to take any action respecting their grievances. They were greatly agitated because four workmen had been dismissed at the great Putiloff factory and because their requests for an eight hour day, higher pay, better sanitary conditions, and the right to elect arbitration committees, had …
