Romeo And Juliet As A Dramatized Sonnet, Maxine Elizabeth Crain
Romeo And Juliet As A Dramatized Sonnet, Maxine Elizabeth Crain
Student Work
In An Apology for Poetry, Sidney repeats the ancient dictum that poesy in an “art of imitation.” He continues by explaining that poesy is essentially “a speaking picture” with an end to teach and delight. This conception of literature was not confined to the study of poetry. The writers of emblem books, common from the medieval allegory writers to the metaphysical, suggest that painting is even dumb poetry. This is not necessarily a confusion of genres, but it says something about the basic premise of this paper. The sonnet tradition and what Shakespeare wrote in his sonnet sequence, particularly Sonnets …

Since man has lived in some semblance of organized society, whether banding together out of need for protection or for fellowship, he has felt a need for some form of government. Who rules? How is he selected? What powers does he have? What are his obligations to his subjects? In many primitive societies, such decisions were made on the basis of strength and brutality, which the victor becoming the ruler until someone stronger could grasp authority for himself, only to struggle consistently to remain in power. In many cases the oldest person ruled, judged to be the wisest by virtue …
Prophets Of Doom: The Views Of Jonathan Swift And George Orwell, Mardelle J. Susman
Prophets Of Doom: The Views Of Jonathan Swift And George Orwell, Mardelle J. Susman
Student Work
Although some two hundred years remove them from one another, English satirist Johnathan Swift and Eric Hugh Blair (George Orwell) share a close literary kinship. Swift, the eighteenth-century author of the world classic Gulliver’s Travels, is generally recognized as the superior of the two, since he possesses the distinguished reputation of the Enlightenment man who rubbed elbows with other recognized greats, such as Alexander Pope, John Gray, Addison and Steele. Orwell, a twentieth-century man, and the son of an English soldier perhaps has not yet arrived at the same height of greatness. The author of seven novels and an essayist …

Many standards of our society are in a state of flux at the present time. So must be many of the traditions and standards of our secondary schools, as education is the foundation stone of a democratic society. Educational programs must have as an end result the production of a preponderance of individuals who feel that others think of him or her as an individual with dignity and worth. In addition, the graduates of this elusive program must eagerly hold a commitment to their fellow man and to the proposition that alternatives for orderly change do exist within our society. …
A Hierarachy Of Residential Neighborhoods Determined By Blight Conditions: The Case Of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Joseph W. Preusser
A Hierarachy Of Residential Neighborhoods Determined By Blight Conditions: The Case Of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Joseph W. Preusser
Student Work
The purpose of this study is twofold. In the first place, there is a relative lack of geographical research devoted to the residential sections of cities. This is regretable since residential land-use is predominant in most urban areas. Secondly, there has been very little study of blighted areas by geographers. The majority of the work carried out on this subject has been mainly the product of sociologists and land economists.

Perhaps at no time has a society been so concerned with communication and the development of communication skills at all levels as we are today in the United States. Many famous people has attributed much of their success in leadership positions to communication skills developed in a college forensics program. For example, V. I. Cheadle, the Chancellor of the University of California at Santa Barbara, wrote, “If I were to choose any single activity in school which contributed to my career, I would certainly choose debating.”

A Study Of Nineteenth And Early Twentieth-Century British History As Reflected In The Writings Of Francis Brett Young, Mary Miller Anzulovic
Student Work
This paper deals with social, economic, and political conditions of nineteenth and early twentieth-century Britain as they were presented in the writings of Francis Brett Young. Since his works provide the primary source of information for the study, they will have been listed in the first two major divisions of the Bibliography. All other Bibliography entries were selected because they were significant enough to the study to merit mention and footnote citations.
The Manifest Anxiety-Defensiveness Scale, Induction Of Threat To Self-Esteem, And The Resolution Of Dissonance, Dennis F. Gardner
The Manifest Anxiety-Defensiveness Scale, Induction Of Threat To Self-Esteem, And The Resolution Of Dissonance, Dennis F. Gardner
Student Work
It has been suggested that self-esteem is a significant contributing variable in determining defensive behavior (Asch, 1948; Janis & Field, 1959; Lazarus & Longo, 1953; Rosenzweig, 1938; Sears, 1940). Several studies suggest that individuals of high and low self-ssteem (SE) manifest different patterns of response to the experience of success and failure (Altrochi, Parsons, & Dickoff, 1960; Stotland & Hillmer, 1962; Stotland, Thorley, Thomas, Cohen, & Zander, 1957). Further, Slock and Thomas (1955) and Altrochi, Parsons, and Dickoff (1960) have shown that persons with high SE tend to avoid threatening materials, while persons with low SE tend to approach and …

A Study Of Business Education Teacher Load In Five Omaha Public High Schools, 1953-1969, Merle Gier
Student Work
One belief rather widely accepted by educators today is that the effectiveness of teacher-pupil relationships and the quality of teaching are determined by the diligence and competence of the teachers themselves and also largely by the working conditions and the weight of teaching assignments which help to govern the teaching load.

Appearance And Mode Of Perception In A Simulated Interview, Stephen Edward Markowitz
Student Work
This study dealt with the effects of appearance and mode of perception upon the interviewing process. Research to date has stressed the predictive validity of the interview and ignored the dynamics of the on-going process. The present study was a microanalytic investigation of some of the factors influencing the interviewer.
A Comparative Study Of The Educational Systems Of India And The United States, Jarugula Subba Rao
A Comparative Study Of The Educational Systems Of India And The United States, Jarugula Subba Rao
Student Work
To understand any system of education one must understand the people who created it: their land, history and culture. Each system of education is a reflection of its own culture. It is dangerous to generalize concerning any system of education without an exhaustive understanding of its culture. While problems appear much the same in other countries, the answers that are worked out in response to them often differ widely.
The Development Of School Board Policies For The Alta Community School District, Paul L. Bjorkgren
The Development Of School Board Policies For The Alta Community School District, Paul L. Bjorkgren
Student Work
Public education in the United States is a function of the states. In discharging this responsibility each state has recognized that a considerable degree of local control of education is essential. The establishment of local school districts and the creation of local boards of education to administer school district affairs reflect this point of view. This decentralized control of education places heavy responsibilities on local boards of education. Although state mandatory laws and regulations governing education must be followed, numerous decisions on educational matters have been left to the discretion of local boards. It is not surprising that educational policy …
A Survey To Determine The Acceptability Of A Merit Pay System In The Bellevue Public Schools, James Edward Marsicek
A Survey To Determine The Acceptability Of A Merit Pay System In The Bellevue Public Schools, James Edward Marsicek
Student Work
In September, 1968, the Board of Education of the Bellevue Public School System approved a new salary schedule for their teachers which represented a substantial increase (about 10-12%) for all staff positions. This generous increment made the schedule, in the opinion of the Board, much more competitive with other school systems in the sub-urban area and in the state.

The community of Florence, since 1917 a part of the city of Omaha, had rather ususual history of settlement in that it was founded not once, but twice. In 1846 the area was occupied by members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Winter Quarters, as it was then called, had a population of approximately 3500 inhabitants and was the scene of much activity. Abandoned in 1848, it lay prey to plundering Indians and prairie fires until 1854 when James Mitchell and the Nebraska Winter Quarters Company laid claim to the area and established another settlement which they …

The Workload Of The Faculty In Five Independent Secondary Schools Conducted By The Ursuline Order, M. Ursula Baumann
Student Work
Dialog and contact with teachers in Ursuline secondary schools disclosed the teachers' dissatisfaction, even resentment with existing conditions in their teaching days. In short, their dissatisfactions, as mirrored in personal interviews both with them and with the administrative personnel to whom they have expressed themselves, bear out the thought and convictions of educators in recent years on the subject of the teacher's work load.
Eros And Miss Austen: A Selective Mythologycal Explication Of Jane Austen's Major Novels, Robert L. Corey
Eros And Miss Austen: A Selective Mythologycal Explication Of Jane Austen's Major Novels, Robert L. Corey
Student Work
A few words about method are in order before approaching Jane Austen’s six major novels with a critical method which, although frequently misunderstood or too hastily dismissed as just another tangential pseudo-science, proffers rather to the discriminating reader a critical tool of immense value moving centripetally toward deeper levels of meaning and archaic significance not only in the creative and individual powers of the artist but with the central collective myth-making and ritual of the human community as well.

Survey Of The Millard Elementary Summer School Program, Gene L. Bentley
Student Work
For hundreds of thousands of youngsters across the country, the "good ole summertime" is better than ever. However, there are some children who must attend summer school to make up work that they have failed during the school year. The parents of the Millard School District elementary students are making for the reasons that their child has been referred for the remedial work during the summer school. Perhaps the parents had valid reasons for questioning the summer school program offered in the Millard Public School System. Why was Millard's summer school program making slow progress in the areas of curriculum …

In a recent article in The Saturday Review. Edward Albee said, “Art is not escape; it is engagement.” Although he was speaking about modern theatre, it applies to the drama of all times. It is difficult to divorce a play from its environment and still expect to receive the total impact it once produced. On the other hand, it is not enough for a play to have relevance to its own time; if our age is not read, it must also speak to our sensibilities.

The Utopian Tradition: A Comparison Of "The Republic" And "Utopia" With James Hilton's 'Lost Horizon", Laurence J. Sokol
Student Work
Utopia -- the concept more than the word -- has captured the imagination and fostered the hopes of men through thousands of years of recorded history. Behind the concept, one which various ages have redefined for their own particular situations, lies the nascent belief that humankind, working in harmony and unison, can create a better world and achieve maximum progress towards happiness.

James Agee died in 1955; he was forty-five years old. While riding in a New York taxi cab, the author was stricken with a fatal heart attack which was not completely unexpected. Agee, a tall, gangling individual, had little regard for physical fitness and he often subsisted on heavy smoking, drinking, and all-night bull sessions. His personal appearance was his least worry as a close friend relates: his clothes were dark and shiny. I can't imagine him in a new suit. Black shoes scuffed Gray, wrinkled collar, a button off his shirt and a ravelled tie -- He wore clothes …
The Psychological And Spiritual Quest For Personal Identity In The Poetry Of Theodore Roethke, Patrick J. Stricklett
The Psychological And Spiritual Quest For Personal Identity In The Poetry Of Theodore Roethke, Patrick J. Stricklett
Student Work
In a panel discussion on “Identity” at Northwestern University in February of 1963, Theodore Roethke listed the major themes of his poetry; (1) the multiplicity, the chaos of modern life; (2) the way, the means of establishing a personal identity, a self, in the face of that chaos; (3) the nature of creation, that faculty for producing order out of disorder in the arts, particularly in poetry; and (4) the nature of God himself. The two major experimental sequences of poetry in Roethke’s career, included in The Lost Some and Other Poems (1948) and Praise to the End! (1951) are …
Effects Of Proportion Of Positive Instances And Degree Of Restriction On The Induction Of A Principle, Dennis C. Dervin
Effects Of Proportion Of Positive Instances And Degree Of Restriction On The Induction Of A Principle, Dennis C. Dervin
Student Work
An experiment is reported in which student subjects attempted to discover a principle by pairing number and letters. Seven groups of subjects varied on two dimensions, proportion of positive instances sampled and degree of restriction in choosing number-letter pairs. It was found that subjects who sampled a higher proportion of positive instances were more successful that those sampling a lower proportion. Furthermore, subjects who were unrestricted in their choice of number-letter pairs, because they sampled a higher proportion of positive instances, performed more efficiently than subjects who were restricted and sampled a lower proportion of positive instances. Finally, when both …

This is a report of an ecological study of delinquency in a Chicago neighborhood having the fifth highest rate of delinquency compared with the 75 other neighborhood communities in the city. Ecology, broadly defined, is the study of the interrelationships between organism and the immediate environment in which it lives. In sociology, some ecological studies have been concerned with total urban areas. Others have investigated smaller areas such as neighborhoods or census tracts. The unit areas are compared with one another in terms of certain characteristics considered to be the independent variables such as housing, income, and mobility and certain …

Populism And Industrialism: The Ideology Of The Official Organ Of The Nebraska Populist Movement, Samuel Emlen Walker
Student Work
After nearly forty years, John D. Hicks' The Populist Revolt remains the standard work on Populism. Despite the shortcomings of ignoring the international economic context and a tendency to accept at face value the Populists' complaints, it is the best one volume of political history of the movement. In addition, it established the interpretive framework in which the subject has been viewed. This framework consists of two components, the agrarian and the retrogressive contexts. Populism was a political reform movement led by economically distressed farmers in the south and midwest, joined by the western silver states, that sprung from the …

The decade of the 1960's directed the attention of many historians to the problems of the Black American; discrimination, political and social inequality, ghetto concentration, and so on, and so on. Their story is not unique, yet it must be told if justice is to be served. Perhaps this study of success of another minority group -- the American Jew -- will give additional purpose and hope to the cause of the Black. For it can be done! This study is limited to the activities of a minority group in international affairs, and how that group influences the relationship between …

An Analysis Of A Pre-Student Teaching Experience In The Preparation Of A Social Studies Teacher, Franklin Wayne Ellis
Student Work
In recent years the growing realization of the importance of education has brought about much criticism of teacher education institutions and their practices and procedures in pre-service training from those within the profession as well as from those without. The particular need appears to be for a kind of pre-service program which will provide for the development of skills, understandings, and attitudes in order to make it possible for beginning teachers to realistically and successfully cope with the teaching situations they will face.
