Many academic libraries have found opportunities to showcase unique content through conference-hosting services, such as website-hosting and conference proceeding publishing. This poster describes two libraries’ successful efforts to archive conference materials from an undergraduate research conference and a professional conference for scholars. Through the lens of these two case studies, the repository coordinators will discuss engaging with presenters on topics of author rights, ethical use of others’ work in their presentations, creating a sustainable infrastructure for continued growth of the conference, and collaborating with faculty.

We draw upon our own experience to discuss the use of undergraduate student journals to promote active learning by comparing and contrasting institution-focused (Park Place Economist) and externally-focused (Undergraduate Economic Review) publications, suggesting ways of integrating these journals into upper-division coursework, and describing ways in which economics departments can partner with libraries to facilitate the editorial process and increase the accessibility of the journal.

Since the publication of Reinventing Undergraduate Education: A Blueprint for America's Research Universities (Boyer Commission 1998), many colleges and universities have committed to systematic programs of undergraduate research. Librarians are increasingly proactive in providing the tools and research support services necessary to build long-term relationships with undergraduate student researchers through a variety of services and outreach including instruction services, space for individual and group research, and targeted collection development. The area of human rights has had significant attention both nationally and internationally in the press and in the political arena. While there is a renewed commitment to human rights advocacy, there is also an upward trend in popular culture of depictions of torture. This article provides critical annotations of English-language reference sources, published since 1990, and available both in print and online, in an effort to aid librarians collecting and weeding materials for human rights research.

In 2004, Ames Library staff and librarians collaborated to create a Strategic Plan that would guide efforts to improve existing services and develop new ones. Part of the plan called for re-visioning media services to be more collaborative with faculty and information technology staff. This presentation will discuss how the transition from media center to digital center began and how it has impacted services, staffing, technology and relationships in and outside the library.

The purpose of this article is to prove that chick lit is a legitimate and important area of collection for academic libraries. This article presents a definition of chick lit with an overview of the origin and significance of the term itself, discusses chick lit’s impact on publishing, and its relationship to academia and women’s writing. The article concludes with guidelines on building a chick lit collection.

The Compton Teacher Information Literacy Institute (CTILI) is a teacher professional development program funded by the Compton (CA) Unified School District and delivered by the University of California at Irvine Libraries’ Department of Education and Outreach. Teacher professional development, university and library outreach activities and influences are discussed to give background on CTILI curriculum development. Institute goals and objectives are outlined, as is our curriculum remodeling effort after a mid-year assessment. Plans for future institutes are included.
