Edna St. Vincent Millay: Artisan Of Violent Feminine Agency, Carolina Galdiz Apr 2014

Edna St. Vincent Millay: Artisan Of Violent Feminine Agency, Carolina Galdiz

Senior Theses and Projects

For decades, scholars have understood Edna St Vincent Millay in two fairly distinctive patterns as either a classical romanticist or ephemeral rebel. This dual reputation has been crafted from the obvious presence of natural imagery, sexual dynamism, feminine voice, and romantic yearning in her work. What critics have failed to see in her poetry are the potent sinister undertones that claim violence as a means to power. I will argue that Millay narrates the gendered struggle that takes place in this violence, in order to ultimately assert feminine agency in the process of forming a cultural identity. Thus, rather than …

The Effect Of Gender On Aggressive And Prosocial Behavior With Gaming Technology, Nikita Singhal Apr 2014

The Effect Of Gender On Aggressive And Prosocial Behavior With Gaming Technology, Nikita Singhal

Senior Theses and Projects

The relationship between different types of video games and male and female adolescent behavior has been widely speculated in the recent past. Research has suggested that violent video games may increase aggressive behavior, and prosocial video games may enhance altruistic behavior (Willoughby, Adachi & Good, 2012; Greitemeyer, Osswald, & Brauer, 2010). Bartholow and Anderson (2002) suggested that men may be more influenced by violent video games than women. Interestingly, past research on prosocial video games has not found any gender differences (Gentile et al, 2009). The current study examined the effect of gender on aggressive and prosocial behavior in relation …

The Project Of The Physician: An Inquiry Into The Nature Of Medicine, Alexander X. Shea Apr 2014

The Project Of The Physician: An Inquiry Into The Nature Of Medicine, Alexander X. Shea

Senior Theses and Projects

The telos of this project is twofold – in Part I, I will attempt to solidify the goal of the physician in medical practice, and in Part II, I will examine the specific ways by which the doctor can actualize that goal. In other words, the central questions are: 1) What is the goal of the physician? and 2) How is the physician to accomplish or actualize that goal?

Online Or Traditional University: A Comparison Of The Labor Market Returns To College Type, Leslie Schotz Apr 2014

Online Or Traditional University: A Comparison Of The Labor Market Returns To College Type, Leslie Schotz

Senior Theses and Projects

In a time when the rising costs of education have deterred students from seeking a college degree, finding a cost-effective alternative to a traditional university has become an increasingly important issue. This study seeks to evaluate the labor market returns to earning a degree online versus a traditional university through an econometric regression based on survey data of recent graduates from online and traditional universities. Regression analysis compares average income for graduates of online and traditional institutions while controlling for measures of school type, characteristics, selectivity, and region at the institutional level. The effect of college type on average income …

Fragmented Communities: Addressing War And Injury-Related Trauma Through Community Building Among Iraqi Women Refugees In Connecticut, Stephanie B. Clemente Apr 2014

Fragmented Communities: Addressing War And Injury-Related Trauma Through Community Building Among Iraqi Women Refugees In Connecticut, Stephanie B. Clemente

Senior Theses and Projects

For Iraqi refugee women in Connecticut, trauma is a pervasive and debilitating force that affects their everyday lives. Although these women escaped the persecution and ongoing violence in Iraq, they suffer from feelings of loneliness and anxiety and are haunted by flashbacks, nightmares and memories of their traumatic experiences. Coupled with fears for their relatives who still have to endure the worsening situation in Iraq, Iraqi refugee women are caught between dealing with a trauma of the past and a trauma that permeates their lives in America. Aside from medical institutions, social capital networks including ethnic communities, mosques, refugee resettlement …

Mindfulness And Its Ability To Alleviate State And Trait Anxiety In College Students, Kaitlyn Mascioli Apr 2014

Mindfulness And Its Ability To Alleviate State And Trait Anxiety In College Students, Kaitlyn Mascioli

Senior Theses and Projects

Society today puts extreme pressure on individuals to take on a magnitude of daily responsibilities in order to be successful. We are pushed beyond our limits both mentally and physically, which results in heightened state and trait anxiety. Adopting the theory of mindfulness teaches us to live in the present moment and not criticize our thoughts (Bormann et. al, 2013). The current study tests the effects of daily mindfulness meditation on state and trait anxiety as measured by the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory. Participants were Trinity College students that engaged in formal meditation sessions twice a week, but maintained the practice …

Measuring Student Gains On The Connecticut Mastery Test, Taylor K. Godfrey Apr 2014

Measuring Student Gains On The Connecticut Mastery Test, Taylor K. Godfrey

Senior Theses and Projects

The implementation of No Child Left Behind (NCLB) in 2002 led to an accountability system in schools based on high-stakes standardized tests (Orlich, 2004). NCLB measures schools’ performance on tests based on the percentage of students performing at proficiency level. Due to the need to reach proficiency, Connecticut has placed an emphasis on reporting static yearly test scores on the Connecticut Mastery Test (CMT), without indicating gains made by students as they transition from one grade level to the next. This research study used independent student-level data to calculate gains on the CMT across three continuous school years for students …

College Students’ Perceived Risks Of Ecstasy Use And The State Of Ecstasy Prevention, Maria Young Apr 2014

College Students’ Perceived Risks Of Ecstasy Use And The State Of Ecstasy Prevention, Maria Young

Senior Theses and Projects

National statistics reveal a startling trend concerning ecstasy use among high school students, with over 5% of 10th graders and 8% of 12th graders reporting lifetime use (Dennis & Ballard, 2002). Ecstasy use among college students is even higher, with some studies reporting rates up to 10% (Boyd et al., 2003). Although previous research has documented the prevalence and predictors of ecstasy use, there is a limited understanding of how college students’ perceptions of risk related to ecstasy use are formed. A focus group was conducted using a sample of Trinity College students. In addition, a brief online …

Gender Differences Among College Students With Respect To Work-Parenting Balance, Sara J. Bess Apr 2014

Gender Differences Among College Students With Respect To Work-Parenting Balance, Sara J. Bess

Senior Theses and Projects

Do gender differences exist among Trinity students with respect to career and parenting expectations? Do gender differences also exist with respect to hostile versus benevolent sexism (Glick & Fiske, 1996)? Is sexism associated with career and parenting expectations for oneself? From these questions, I hypothesized that women would be more likely to hold career and parenting expectations that are mutually dependent; men would be more likely to hold career expectations that are independent of parenting expectations. More sexist women would hold more dependent expectations; more sexist men would hold more independent expectations. An online survey was fielded to a stratified …

The Effect Of Aggressive And Prosocial Video Games On Aggressive And Prosocial Behavior, Valerie L. Scelsa Apr 2014

The Effect Of Aggressive And Prosocial Video Games On Aggressive And Prosocial Behavior, Valerie L. Scelsa

Senior Theses and Projects

The relationship between video games and aggressive and prosocial behavior has been a topic of special interest for psychologists, as it may have important implications for society. Research has suggested that violent video games increase aggressive behavior, and prosocial video games increase prosocial behavior (Adachi, Good and Willoughby, 2012; Brauer, Greitemeyer and Osswald, 2010). However, the literature on aggressive behavior is somewhat conflicting and the research on prosocial behavior is relatively recent. Therefore, the current study aimed to fill in some of the gaps in the current literature by examining the effect of prosocial and aggressive video games on prosocial …

An Exploratory Study Of College Students’ Attitudes About Ecstasy, Rachel Reingold Apr 2014

An Exploratory Study Of College Students’ Attitudes About Ecstasy, Rachel Reingold

Senior Theses and Projects

In a recent survey of 18-35 year olds, 15% reported using ecstasy (Businelle et al., 2009) and many emerging adults viewed it as “safer” than other illicit drugs, with limited negative consequences (Bahora et al., 2009). Although numerous quantitative studies have explored the topic of ecstasy use in college students, there is limited qualitative research, most of which is limited to users. Thus, in the current study, we used a focus group methodology to better understand users’ and nonusers’ knowledge, expectations, and perceived risks of ecstasy use, for the purpose of informing prevention efforts on college campuses. Twenty-four college students …

The Worth Of Water: A Look At The Water Scarcity Crisis And The Perceptions Of The Basic Need Of Water In South Africa, Megan O'Brien Apr 2014

The Worth Of Water: A Look At The Water Scarcity Crisis And The Perceptions Of The Basic Need Of Water In South Africa, Megan O'Brien

Senior Theses and Projects

Not every South African has access to the same amount of water, quality of water, or infrastructure for water. A core question for me during this research was if and how attitudes towards water and daily water consumption vary along with different levels of water accessibility. Considering both the emerging global water scarcity crisis and the legacy of Apartheid, evident by the institutional inequalities in South Africa, I unravel the current system of water allocation. First, I discuss the definition of water scarcity, the politics surrounding water allocation, and South Africa’s Constitutional right to water as well as the Free …
