Deux Histoires De Meurtres Et D’Intrigues : L’Étude Et L’Application Pratique Des Techniques Courantes De La Traduction Française, Joseph Kalmar

Senior Independent Study Theses

Understanding Behavioral And Emotional Responses To Frames Used By Animal Rights Organizations In The United States And France, Alysa Tarrant Jan 2020

Understanding Behavioral And Emotional Responses To Frames Used By Animal Rights Organizations In The United States And France, Alysa Tarrant

Senior Independent Study Theses

The purpose of this study was to examine how varying demographics among French and American populations responded to three types of frames used by animal rights organizations: ethical, environmental, and health related. A two by three experimental design in which participants saw two images corresponding to one of the three frames was distributed. The survey measured each respondent’s political opinions, emotional response, and behavioral response through self-designed scales. The study finds that culture and political ideologies play a significant role in influencing frame response, such that the French respondents were more emotionally and behaviorally influenced than Americans, and that liberals …

Six Of One, Une Demi-Douzaine De L’Autre: Detecting Cross-Language Code-Switching In A Continuous Narrative, Melissa Kadish Jan 2019

Six Of One, Une Demi-Douzaine De L’Autre: Detecting Cross-Language Code-Switching In A Continuous Narrative, Melissa Kadish

Senior Independent Study Theses

This Independent Study examined how cross-language code-switching is processed and perceived. The following experiment compared how long English-French bilinguals, English monolinguals, and English-speaking French-language-learners took to detect instances of French/English code-switching in a semantically-rich narrative. Bilinguals displayed shorter change-detection response latencies than language learners and monolinguals, but the latter two groups did not significantly differ. These results provide insight into how the observed cognitive differences between bilinguals and monolinguals may develop, and offer support for the multi-language lexical processing theory of language interference. This study also addresses potential sociocultural origins of the observed language-level differences in code-switching perception by examining …

La Trahison Et La Honte : Le Rôle Du Gouvernement De Vichy Dans La Rafle Du Vel’ D’Hiv’ Et Sa Mémoire Aux Yeux De La Société Française, Olivia Bolek Jan 2016

La Trahison Et La Honte : Le Rôle Du Gouvernement De Vichy Dans La Rafle Du Vel’ D’Hiv’ Et Sa Mémoire Aux Yeux De La Société Française, Olivia Bolek

Senior Independent Study Theses

While many people know that World War II France was occupied by the Germans, retaining little sovereignty in the de facto Vichy government, many may not realize the extent to which the French collaborated with their Nazi occupiers and how many anti-Semitic measures were in fact created by the Vichy government. After the war, the crimes committed by the French against the Jews became a taboo which slowly transformed over the years into what is today considered to be an obsession with the topic. These events are best demonstrated through the 1942 Vel’ d’Hiv’ roundup in which Parisian authorities gathered …

La France Et Le Plurilinguisme: Deux Opposés Qui S'Attirent? Une Étude De L'Enseignement Et De L'Apprentissage Des Langues Étrangères En France., Rachel L. Lorch

Senior Independent Study Theses

The Role Of Political Culture In Understanding Inconsistencies Between International And Domestic Privacy Law In France And The United States, Mallory Kruper Jan 2015

The Role Of Political Culture In Understanding Inconsistencies Between International And Domestic Privacy Law In France And The United States, Mallory Kruper

Senior Independent Study Theses

In evaluating the role of international law, most scholarship focuses on how international laws, treaties and courts function and are enforced. However, to best understand how international laws are created, as well as how they are internalized within individual countries’ judicial systems, it is also necessary to look at the normative side of international law. This project applies the theory of transnational legal process to examine how recognized international norms are uniquely recognized by different legal systems. More specifically, I analyze how political culture affects the level of consistency between international privacy norms and domestic law through the study of …

Tuteo O Ustedeo: Un Estudio De Las Formas De Tratamiento En Las Publicidades De Escaparates / Tutoiement Ou Vouvoiement: Une Etude Des Formes D'Adresse Dans Les Publicités Des Vitrines, Charlotte M. Klein Jan 2015

Tuteo O Ustedeo: Un Estudio De Las Formas De Tratamiento En Las Publicidades De Escaparates / Tutoiement Ou Vouvoiement: Une Etude Des Formes D'Adresse Dans Les Publicités Des Vitrines, Charlotte M. Klein

Senior Independent Study Theses

In both French and Spanish, there exist two pronouns of the second person singular form of address: tu/vous and /usted, respectively. While the first of each pair is typically considered the ‘informal’ pronoun of address, the second is more ‘formal’, creating a complicated distinction that every person must resolve when speaking. This project analyzes the difficulty of choosing between the two forms of address through the lens of politeness theory, emphasizing the concepts of solidarity and power as well as other important factors that contribute to this complex decision. To show how the pronouns are …

La Démocratisation De L'Enseignement Secondaire En France : L'Égalité Pour Tous?, Eowyn Groves Jan 2013

La Démocratisation De L'Enseignement Secondaire En France : L'Égalité Pour Tous?, Eowyn Groves

Senior Independent Study Theses

France is a county who takes pride in her principles of equality. In this project, I analyze how current secondary education in France is stuck in a rut of scholarly and social inequalities. Despite the egalitarian values and discourses held to strongly by the French, the inequalities in their system of education remain significant and worrisome. It is clear that all of the inequalities in this system revolve around one central issue: that of social class. It is because of these problems of class that we dispute the success of the scholarly democratization that we see in France today. This …

Ville Du Flaneur: La Transformation De Paris Selon Ses Propres Temoignages, Christopher J. Hanson Jan 2012

Ville Du Flaneur: La Transformation De Paris Selon Ses Propres Temoignages, Christopher J. Hanson

Senior Independent Study Theses

In my Independent Study, I analyze the flâneur, a nineteenth century literary figure known for wandering the streets of Paris. Born as a result of modernity, the flâneur sought refuge in the majestic arcades of Paris, absorbing every detail of this new modern life. By using Walter Benjamin's unfinished work, "Arcades Project," I attempt to define the flâneur in more precise terms. From here, I build a case to disprove Benjamin's assumption that the flâneur disappeared along with the advent of materialism. By discussing poetry, paintings, literature, and film from three distinct periods, I construct a more concrete image of …

Je Voulais Être Homme, Rien Qu’Homme: An Analysis Of The Intersection Of Communism And Masculinity Inthe Negritude Movement, 1930-1939, Kristen Weischedel Jan 2012

Je Voulais Être Homme, Rien Qu’Homme: An Analysis Of The Intersection Of Communism And Masculinity Inthe Negritude Movement, 1930-1939, Kristen Weischedel

Senior Independent Study Theses

The negritude movement of the 1930s was a political and social movement that sought to reclaim African identity and culture whilst rejecting the French expectation of assimilation. This presentation examines recruitment methods of political and social activism, such as the use of propaganda. These forms of activism used both masculine and communist ideologies to advance their goals which ultimately reveal their concerns collectively and as individuals.
