Anencephaly: Concepts Of Personhood, Ethical Questions, And Nursing Care, Jessica L. Ryskamp Dec 2010

Anencephaly: Concepts Of Personhood, Ethical Questions, And Nursing Care, Jessica L. Ryskamp

Senior Honors Theses

Anencephaly is a neural tube defect that severely limits the lifespan of affected infants. While these infants have no higher brain function, they are still persons, and should be given the same moral and ethical considerations as healthy infants. With this in mind, organ donation procedures should follow the same guidelines that apply to other donors. Because a large part of nursing care for anencephalic infants is palliative care, nurses need appropriate training to care effectively for both the infant and the family, providing for physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual needs.

Talking To Strangers: The Use Of A Cameraman In The Office And What It Reveals About Communication, Sarah C. Stockslager

Senior Honors Theses

In the television mock-documentary The Office, co-workers Jim and Pam tell the cameraman they are dating before they tell their fellow co-workers in the office. The cameraman sees them getting engaged before anyone in the office has a clue. Even the news of their pregnancy is witnessed first by the camera crew. Jim and Pam’s boss, Michael, and other employees, such as Dwight, Angela and others, also share this trend of self-disclosure to the cameraman. They reveal secrets and embarrassing stories to the cameraman, showing a private side of themselves that most of their co-workers never see. First the term …

Infant Pain Management, Breanne Ziraldo Nov 2010

Infant Pain Management, Breanne Ziraldo

Senior Honors Theses

Emphasis on infant pain management has recently become prominent in the medical field. Though it was once thought that infants do not feel pain or remember pain, this thinking has changed due to recent research on the subject. This research has found that infants’ underdeveloped nervous systems actually leads to increased pain rather than decreased pain as previously thought. Research has also found that there are long-term developmental risks associated with prolonged or unmanaged pain in infancy. However, this has not been applied to clinical practice. Studies show that infants are still being under-medicated, if medicated at all, for painful …

Making A Place For Gifted Education: Learning From States That Maintain Gifted Education Programs Despite Academic And Economic Pressure, Amanda Vander Klay

Senior Honors Theses

As the passage of the No Child Left Behind Act (2001), which includes expectations for Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP), is constantly on the minds of state and local leaders, gifted programming has seen a decrease in the United States. In the difficult economy, limited resources are being funneled towards those students who need to increase their test scores to make AYP. This thesis will examine the model states of Kansas, Iowa, Oklahoma, and Arkansas that have managed to provide mandated and funded gifted programming while excelling in their AYP and managing the strains of tight state budgets.

Nursing is a profession that involves caring for people from all different backgrounds, cultures, ethnicities, races, and religions. The world is full of unique individuals. One unifying factor for all people is that everyone has needs. In nursing, most of the care needs are physical and psychosocial needs. However, each person has spiritual needs. Nurses are expected to provide holistic care to their patients; thus the spiritual matters cannot be divorced from the physical and psychosocial ones. Since patients do need spiritual care, nurses have a unique opportunity to minister to these individuals. Nurses are also placed in a position …

Instructing All Students As Language Learners, Emily Hassebeck Oct 2010

Instructing All Students As Language Learners, Emily Hassebeck

Senior Honors Theses

Students who come into a school setting speaking a foreign language are often viewed as a challenge for teachers. These children have many difficulties with learning a new language and need to be properly assessed to determine their knowledge of English and their native language, which in this case is Spanish. According to these results, they need to be placed into an appropriate environment to use the skills which they have to the fullest extent possible. Instead of simply trying to create fluent English speakers, English Language Learners (ELLs) should be taught the grammatical and syntactic aspects of their native …

The Consumers’ Dilemma, Christine N. Poje Oct 2010

The Consumers’ Dilemma, Christine N. Poje

Senior Honors Theses

The green-building movement that originated in the late 1900s has grown significantly in recognition amongst consumers and the building community over the last decade. Each day, professionals throughout the world are conducting research, performing experiments, and creating products that conserve the world’s natural resources more efficiently. Consumers are being provided the opportunity to conserve the world’s natural resources, improve their physical health, and reduce their monthly and annual financial expenses. Why do consumers refrain from investing in these products then? Consumers question whether or not the benefits from implementing green-certified products within their home and work environments will outweigh the …

The Life Of Evariste Galois And His Theory Of Field Extension, Felicia N. Adams May 2010

The Life Of Evariste Galois And His Theory Of Field Extension, Felicia N. Adams

Senior Honors Theses

Evariste Galois made many important mathematical discoveries in his short lifetime, yet perhaps the most important are his studies in the realm of field extensions. Through his discoveries in field extensions, Galois determined the solvability of polynomials. Namely, given a polynomial P with coefficients is in the field F and such that the equation P(x) = 0 has no solution, one can extend F into a field L with α in L, such that P(α) = 0. Whereas Galois Theory has numerous practical applications, this thesis will conclude with the examination and proof of the fact that it is impossible …

Educational Backgrounds And Their Effects On Students’ Transition To College, Christen E. Walker Apr 2010

Educational Backgrounds And Their Effects On Students’ Transition To College, Christen E. Walker

Senior Honors Theses

Home-school has become a common alternative to public- and private-school in America, but it is also highly controversial among researchers and society regarding educational rights and freedoms. Research indicated that these three methods of education do not differ significantly from one another, and there is little indication as to which educational background will best prepare a high school student for his or her adjustment to college. Academic preparation is found to be the most effective factor for a high school students’ transition to college, but little research has been done concerning which education affiliation is most effective in achieving this …

Being a parent means taking on both the joys and struggles that come with it. When a parent discovers that his or her child has been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), the level of stress changes. It could be helpful to discover the severity of change that the stresses involved in parenting a child with ASD brings to the parent/child relationship and what effect this has on a child’s physical, cognitive, emotional, and spiritual development. To attempt to answer these questions, six parents were interviewed. Findings suggested that structure in daily living improves the quality of the child/parent relationship …

Deserts Of Development: How God Shapes Leaders In The Wilderness, Jeffrey R. Dickson Apr 2010

Deserts Of Development: How God Shapes Leaders In The Wilderness, Jeffrey R. Dickson

Senior Honors Theses

A wilderness experience in the life of a believer is often a tool used by God to shape him for some leadership position or specific calling. While the desert one is thrust into may be physical in nature or purely psychological, wilderness experiences share common characteristics and yet yield an array of differentiating results for those who travel through them. In order to examine how God shapes leaders in the wilderness, three case studies reveal how the individuals in each case grew in the leadership skills necessary for them to carry out their calling.

Women In The Aviation Industry, Maureen N. Mutisya Apr 2010

Women In The Aviation Industry, Maureen N. Mutisya

Senior Honors Theses

The Aviation industry has developed extensively since its establishment by the Wright Brothers in 1903. Over time, the highly male-dominated industry experienced significant changes to incorporate female aviators. Determined women initiated this process through participating in the aircraft engineering sector and pursuing careers as pilots. However, these women faced various challenges, which resulted in setbacks to their effective growth in the industry. In fact, vital issues encountered in the past are still present and often overlooked in today’s aviation industry. Therefore, identifying these problems and proposing solutions with effective corrective measures is necessary to increase and motivate female pilots globally.

The Construction Of An Elementary Music Curriculum Utilizing Backward Design And Bloom’S Taxonomy, Jessica P. Warner Apr 2010

The Construction Of An Elementary Music Curriculum Utilizing Backward Design And Bloom’S Taxonomy, Jessica P. Warner

Senior Honors Theses

Based on the philosophy that the development of curriculum should provide a framework for the assessment of student learning, backward design was utilized to develop a curriculum review for an elementary music program. This design worked directly with three levels of Bloom’s taxonomy (knowledge, application, and synthesis) in order to demonstrate the level of learning for three grades in a small, private mid-Atlantic elementary school. Fifteen students were assessed using the rubrics both before and after curriculum implementation, and analyses were conducted to determine what changes resulted from the focused, short-term curriculum. A plan of improvement was then developed for …

Color Psychology And Graphic Design Applications, Rose M. Rider Apr 2010

Color Psychology And Graphic Design Applications, Rose M. Rider

Senior Honors Theses

Color filters humanity’s perception of the world and alters people’s relationship with their surroundings. It influences human perception, preference, and psychology throughout the lifespan. Color preferences appear in infants as young as three months old, and typically change with age. Some responses to color may be innate, and some may be learned from nature or culture. Cool hues are relaxants, and are generally preferred over their more arousing warm counterparts. Color is a subtle but pervasively influential element in graphic design. It permeates graphic representations in packaging, advertising, and branding. Slight variations in color can advance or devastate design effectiveness …

The Lord's Anointed: Covenantal Kingship In Psalm 2 And Acts 4, Alexander C. Stewart Apr 2010

The Lord's Anointed: Covenantal Kingship In Psalm 2 And Acts 4, Alexander C. Stewart

Senior Honors Theses

This study examines the title “Christ” as applied to Jesus in Acts 4:25-27. “Christ” or “Anointed One” here is directly connected to Psalm 2:1-2, and ultimately derives from the royal anointing ceremony of Israel. That ceremony symbolizes a commitment by God to the monarch which is made most specific in the Davidic covenant. The Gospel of Luke uses the title “Christ” to connect these Davidic themes to Jesus. In Acts 4:25-27, “Christ” continues to signify Israel’s king backed by the Davidic covenant. The apostles’ reading of Psalm 2 provides a foundation for understanding their own recent persecution and for their …

Not only is mostly everyone exposed to media, but also the typical American spends at least several hours a day in exposure to some kind of media. All this time Americans spend watching or listening to media raises the question: “If someone spends hours each day watching television or watching some other sort of media, is this going to have some sort of effect?” This study begins with a literature review of research which investigates the …

Strategies For Holistic Care In Neonatal Male Clients Undergoing Circumcision, Lindsey Scott Apr 2010

Strategies For Holistic Care In Neonatal Male Clients Undergoing Circumcision, Lindsey Scott

Senior Honors Theses

Male circumcision is a controversial medical procedure routinely practiced in the United States. Once performed only as a religious act, this minor surgery became fashionable in the late nineteenth century. In modern society, circumcision remains popular, but the medical community continues to debate its necessity. Perhaps a larger debate concerns the use of anesthetics and analgesics in circumcision. Infants do feel pain, and pain relief measures are imperative during this procedure. Several effective methods have been established, and practice must accommodate the updated evidence. If pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic measures are employed appropriately, neonatal circumcision can be performed with minimal trauma …

The Development Of Student Care Office Assessment Procedures, Matthew Stephen Swain Apr 2010

The Development Of Student Care Office Assessment Procedures, Matthew Stephen Swain

Senior Honors Theses

Most universities offer counseling services for their residential students. To answer accrediting bodies, such non-academic departments are now asked to assess the effectiveness of their services. Often, this requires skill sets and time that counseling centers do not possess. A collaborative effort was established with a student services office at a private university in the Southeast and the undergraduate Psychology Department to assist them in the development of new assessment procedures. An intake procedure was created to fulfill this goal. The assembly of appropriate psychometric tests as well as the designing of a computer administered version of the intake process …

Two Becoming One An Examination Of Early American Courtship And Marriage Practices, Brandi Hatfield Marchant

Senior Honors Theses

One may understand the significance of courtship and marriage practices in seventeenth and eighteenth-century America by examining the religious motivations drawn from Anglican and Puritan spirituality. Firsthand accounts, period literature, and scholarly works on early American culture work together to render images of religious experiences in Virginia and New England. The spiritual and material significance of marriage to an individual, that person’s family, and the community made the attainment of marriage the fulfillment of duty. The need to preserve society, the skills acquired through education, the family context of courtship, and conduct of wedding ceremonies reflected the conviction that entering …

Martin Luther The Worship Leader: Processes And Methods Of Liturgical Reform Through The Reformation, Emily A. Dieter Apr 2010

Martin Luther The Worship Leader: Processes And Methods Of Liturgical Reform Through The Reformation, Emily A. Dieter

Senior Honors Theses

During the Reformation, Martin Luther led the movement to bring a new, biblical focus into congregational worship. The means by which Luther ushered this new focus into the church service was the introduction of his own liturgies and with reforms of liturgies that were currently being used by the Roman Catholic Church. In this liturgical reform, there are several observable principles by which Luther operated. First, Luther operated with caution, attempting to keep the changes respectful and gradual. Second, the changes were based primarily on what he believed the teachings of Scripture dictated, and he was purposeful in making sure …
