Review Of Coastal Processes And Evaluation Of The Impact Of The Constructed Groynes Along Lady Robinsons Beach, Botany Bay, New South Wales, Australia, Gregory Frost Jan 2011

Review Of Coastal Processes And Evaluation Of The Impact Of The Constructed Groynes Along Lady Robinsons Beach, Botany Bay, New South Wales, Australia, Gregory Frost

Science, Medicine & Health - Honours Theses

Changes in the morphology of Lady Robinsons Beach, Botany Bay, were determined using historical aerial photographs provided by the Rockdale City Council. Human induced changes to the bay, resulting from the construction of the Sydney Airport Parallel Runways and Port Botany, as well as dredging within the bay have altered the wave regime interacting with the beach. These changes cause refracted wave patterns and subsequent longshore sediment transport. Eleven rock rubble groynes were constructed in two separate stages (1997 and 2005) in an attempt to widen and stabilise the beach. The effectiveness of these groynes at maintaining a wide beachfront …

Characterisation Of Erosion And Nutrient Export Risk In The Lake Illawarra Catchment, Tony Andresen Jan 2011

Characterisation Of Erosion And Nutrient Export Risk In The Lake Illawarra Catchment, Tony Andresen

Science, Medicine & Health - Honours Theses

Lake Illawarra, located on the south east coast of New South Wales, Australia, plays an important role in the lives of many people living in the region. It has economic value through the support of commercial fisheries and the tourism trade as well as providing an area that is aesthetically appealing and supports a range of recreational activities. Maintaining the ecological health of Lake Illawarra is imperative if the Lake is to continue providing these resources. The primary reason for the degradation of Lake Illawarra’s ecological health is an increase in the human population living in the catchment area, especially …

It’S Not Easy Being Orange: Exploring Nsw State Emergency Service Volunteer Attitudes And Practices Towards Nature, Jacqueline L. Mckinnon Jan 2011

It’S Not Easy Being Orange: Exploring Nsw State Emergency Service Volunteer Attitudes And Practices Towards Nature, Jacqueline L. Mckinnon

Science, Medicine & Health - Honours Theses

The State Emergency Service prides itself on the motto “The worst in nature, the best in us” but does the worst in nature bring out the best, in the organisation’s environmental management. This thesis asks what are the practices and attitudes of SES members towards nature. The research draws on discourse analysis of SES documents, survey and interviews with SES volunteers, and ethnographic fieldwork.

The literatures of natural hazards and contemporary nature including more-than-human geographies and the social construction of nature have been drawn upon. The fieldwork undertaken suggests most volunteers’ associate nature with pristine flora and fauna, an idea …

An Integrated Approach To Assess The Vulnerability Of Mangrove And Saltmarsh To Sea-Level Rise At Minnamurra Nsw, Thomas Oliver Jan 2011

An Integrated Approach To Assess The Vulnerability Of Mangrove And Saltmarsh To Sea-Level Rise At Minnamurra Nsw, Thomas Oliver

Science, Medicine & Health - Honours Theses

Mangrove and saltmarsh communities are essential components of estuarine ecosystems on the NSW south coast. Globally, projected sea level rise under IPCC climate scenarios pose a significant threat to the survival of mangrove and saltmarsh ecosystems. The resilience of mangrove and saltmarsh to the impacts of sea-level rise is dependent upon the maintenance of their elevation with respect to rising water levels and their ability to migrate landwards and requires further analysis. An integrated vulnerability assessment of the mangrove and saltmarsh at Minnamurra River, NSW, was undertaken to assess the resilience of mangrove and saltmarsh to the impacts of sea-level …

Petrology, Geochemistry, U-Pb Zircon Ages And Structure Of The Yiddah Porphyry Cu-(Au-Mo) Prospect Of The Late Macquarie Arc, Nsw, Eva Goesch

Science, Medicine & Health - Honours Theses

The Yiddah porphyry Cu-(Au-Mo) system of central-southern New South Wales is contained within the Ordovician-Silurian Goonumbla-Trangie Volcanic Belt of the Macquarie Arc, 12km north of the village of Barmedman and 2 km east of the Gilmore Fault Zone. It is one of several small and poorly understood porphyry-related systems contained within a ~ 40 km north-northwest striking region known as the Rain Hill district. Petrography (microscopy, XRD, ion microprobe), whole rock geochemistry (XRF, ICP-MS), geophysical imagery and geochronology (U-Pb SHRIMP zircon dating) have been used to describe the geology and produce a petrogenetic model of the Yiddah system. This study …

Cultures Of Coal And Climate Change In Helensburgh, New South Wales, Kiri Yapp Jan 2011

Cultures Of Coal And Climate Change In Helensburgh, New South Wales, Kiri Yapp

Science, Medicine & Health - Honours Theses

A Digital Elevation Model (DEM) was constructed using LiDAR and high precision GPS data collected from the site. This was used as the basis for the creation of statistical and spatial models exploring the relationship between surface elevation dynamics, water level changes and mangrove encroachment of saltmarsh. These models projected wetland surface elevation and vegetation distributions in accordance with IPCC projections of sealevel rise. The models indicated that coastal wetlands at Minnamurra are highly vulnerable to future sea-level rise. Using the highest IPCC sea-level rise scenario, the models showed a significant loss of saltmarsh in the next 40 years and …

Climatic Influences On Modern Coral Isotopic Records From The Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Jacqueline Fenwick Jan 2011

Climatic Influences On Modern Coral Isotopic Records From The Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Jacqueline Fenwick

Science, Medicine & Health - Honours Theses

In comparison to the Pacific Ocean climate, there has been relatively little research into the climate of the Indian Ocean. Recently, however, studies have examined the variability of tropical Indian Ocean climate and the influence of oscillations such as the El Niño Southern Oscillation and the proposed Indian Ocean Dipole. Existing palaeoclimate records from this region, primarily derived from coral geochemistry, are limited and are largely from the western Indian Ocean with few sites in the eastern Indian Ocean tropics.

A Porites microatoll from the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, eastern Indian Ocean, was sampled in 1992 and has been analysed to …

Macrochannel Coastal Plain Transition In The Lake Illawarra Catchment, New South Wales, Kele Maher Jan 2011

Macrochannel Coastal Plain Transition In The Lake Illawarra Catchment, New South Wales, Kele Maher

Science, Medicine & Health - Honours Theses

Mullet creek, located on the south coast of New South Wales terminates in a shallow, wave dominated barrier estuary that developed during the Holocene. Sea level fluctuations have affected the current morphology of Mullet Creek not only in its delta, but also for a distance of approximately 8 km from the coast. During this investigation LiDAR data and subsurface sampling techniques have been used to investigate the alluvial terraces and macro‐channel morphology, and transitional sedimentary sequences in the upstream floodplain and downstream channel reaches.

LiDAR revealed that an alluvial terrace is present in the mid to upper reaches in the …

Caring For Place: Negotiating World Heritage On Lord Howe Island, Lucy Farrier Jan 2011

Caring For Place: Negotiating World Heritage On Lord Howe Island, Lucy Farrier

Science, Medicine & Health - Honours Theses

Lord Howe Island, located 700 kilometres north east of Sydney, New South Wales, is part of the World Heritage listed Lord Howe Island Group. In 1982 the Lord Howe Island Group was listed under the World Heritage Convention for its outstanding ‘natural’ heritage values. Since the listing, the World Heritage Convention has revisited the concept of ‘nature’ as the sole criterion for the designation of World Heritage, by embracing the concept of ‘cultural landscape’. However, this has no retrospective effect and therefore has not affected the listing of the Lord Howe Island Group. Consequently, despite a cultural heritage of over …

Geographies Of Inter‐Ethnic Intimacy In Nsw, Alexander Tindale Jan 2011

Geographies Of Inter‐Ethnic Intimacy In Nsw, Alexander Tindale

Science, Medicine & Health - Honours Theses

In Australia, and other immigrant societies, inter-ethnic couples constitute a sizeable and growing sub‐population with unique experiences of, and exposure to, racism. However, inter‐ethnic intimacy has received scant attention in Australian scholarship, particularly within geography. This thesis uses 2006 Census data to investigate the residential geographies of a socially significant subset of inter‐ethnic couples (known as ‘in‐group/out‐group’ couples) across New South Wales (NSW). Some racism literature has used the terms ‘in‐group’ and ‘out‐group’ to distinguish between those (white) Australian or Anglo‐European ethnicities that form the dominant ‘host’ group in Australian society, and those perceived as incompatible with these dominant imaginaries …

Geology Of The Hera (Pb-Zn-Au) And Nymagee (Cu) Deposits, New South Wales, Daniel Graham Page Jan 2011

Geology Of The Hera (Pb-Zn-Au) And Nymagee (Cu) Deposits, New South Wales, Daniel Graham Page

Science, Medicine & Health - Honours Theses

The Nymagee and Hera deposits in western New South Wales are located on the eastern margin of the Cobar Basin. The Cobar Basin is host to several sediment-hosted polymetallic precious and base-metal orebodies, and forms part of the highly metallogenic Lachlan Orogen. Unlike the well described mineralisation around the Cobar region, the Nymagee and Hera deposits are less well known. The documentation of the geological nature, as well as a description of the ore associations, the temperature of formation, and the source of mineralising fluids, will help constrain the physical and chemical conditions at the time of mineralisation, as well …

Transport Choices - To And From Primary Schools In The Sutherland Shire, Stephanie Toole Jan 2011

Transport Choices - To And From Primary Schools In The Sutherland Shire, Stephanie Toole

Science, Medicine & Health - Honours Theses

Private motor vehicle use dominates transport behaviours in Australia, even over traditionally short journeys such as the ‘school run’ - the journey travelled to or from school. Such trends toward motor vehicle use in preference to active or public transport are widely recognised for their significant environmental, social and economic consequences. Transport trends within the Sutherland Shire, New South Wales, exhibit high and increasing rates of motor vehicle use. However, little is known about the transport behaviours of Sutherland Shire residents for the school run. This thesis explores the transport behaviours of children and their parents/guardians as they undertake the …

An Investigation Of The Factors Influencing The Abundance And Species Richness Of Introduced Species On Roadsides In The Illawarra, Melissa J. Huntsman Jan 2011

An Investigation Of The Factors Influencing The Abundance And Species Richness Of Introduced Species On Roadsides In The Illawarra, Melissa J. Huntsman

Science, Medicine & Health - Honours Theses

Negative impacts associated with the invasion of introduced species necessitates that their establishment and spread into new areas is minimised. Road verges facilitate the spread of introduced species along this disturbed corridor and into adjacent habitats. Revegetation of road verges by the Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) aims to inhibit the germination of introduced species by the planting and/or seeding of native species and use of herbicide. The presence and spread of introduced species on verges has been widely studied; however there are still gaps in our knowledge of the success of particular treatments (i.e. seeding and planting) in their …

The Effect Of Differrent Kinds Of Stormwater Quality Improvement Devices On Stormwater Quality Within The Sutherland Shire, Thomas H. Cook Jan 2011

The Effect Of Differrent Kinds Of Stormwater Quality Improvement Devices On Stormwater Quality Within The Sutherland Shire, Thomas H. Cook

Science, Medicine & Health - Honours Theses

Waterways represent an important part of the urban landscape due to the potential human and ecological health impacts associated with them. As a result of this, considerable effort is invested in the improvement and protection of urban stream water quality. This study examined the treatment efficiency of six stormwater quality improvement devices (SQIDs) located across the Sutherland Shire. A range of water quality indicators were assessed and the concentrations of these constituents were measured at both the inflow and the outflow, to determine the relative differences between these two points. These data were compared with established guidelines for stormwater quality, …

Testing The Efficacy Of Heated Seawater For Managing Biofouling In Ship’S Sea Chests, Andrew Leach Jan 2011

Testing The Efficacy Of Heated Seawater For Managing Biofouling In Ship’S Sea Chests, Andrew Leach

Science, Medicine & Health - Honours Theses

Biofouling within sea chests may be more important than ballast water and hull fouling for dispersing certain non-indigenous marine species (NIMS). Despite this current Australian guidelines remain costly, ineffective or may increase the biosecuirty risk of sea chests. This thesis tested the efficacy of a new heated seawater biofouling treatment technique on managing the biosecurity risks posed by sea chests. Chapter 2 provides a baseline assessment of time and temperature regimes required to achieve 100% mortality of secondary biofouling assemblages on Perspex settling plates placed in Port Kembla Harbour. Perspex plates were used because of relative ease to which fouling …

Map-Making Methods: Young People And The Shoalhaven River, Annalee Moes Jan 2011

Map-Making Methods: Young People And The Shoalhaven River, Annalee Moes

Science, Medicine & Health - Honours Theses

Map-making has changed substantially over the past few decades with the creation of new technologies and a literary critique of the cartographic process. This has lead to maps being used in different ways, one of which - participatory map-making in a focus group setting - is explored in this thesis. Young people are continually learning about and exploring natural environments to gain an understanding of and form a relationship with them. These natural environments, and especially natural water bodies, are found to be important places for young people to have access to. In a case study of the Shoalhaven River, …
