A Simulation Model To Evaluate The Impact Of Provisioning On The Operational Availibility Of Navy Training Devices, Dale H. Pierce Oct 1981

A Simulation Model To Evaluate The Impact Of Provisioning On The Operational Availibility Of Navy Training Devices, Dale H. Pierce

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This paper presents the considerations that must be taken into account when formalizing a simulation model to determine the operational availability of a Navy training device. Consideration is given to those design and logistic support parameters that impact the general simulation model before it is formulated. These parameters, are then used as guidelines to collect and screen the data available for use in the general model. The general model is then translated into a computer simulation model. A specific training site is then chosen and data gathered to be used in the computer model. Design and logistic support parameters given …

Quantitative And Qualitative Responses Of Lake Eola To Urban Runoff, Timothy B. Walsh Oct 1981

Quantitative And Qualitative Responses Of Lake Eola To Urban Runoff, Timothy B. Walsh

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

For temperate lakes which receive a variable nutrient loading with seasonal variance in their hydrology, it is necessary to consider the dynamic response of the lake to these variable nutrient loadings. An approach to evaluate Lake Eola water quality responses to dynamic discharge of nutrients is presented. The major source of nutrients for this lake is stormwater runoff containing nitrogen and phosphorus. A mass balance of nutrient sources and sinks for the period of one year (April 1980 - March 1981) was performed. To accomplish this, a field determination for various parameters of the hydrologic budget was performed on a …

An Optimal Algorithm For Detecting Pattern Sensitive Faults In Semiconductor Random Access Memories, Richard I. Subrin Oct 1981

An Optimal Algorithm For Detecting Pattern Sensitive Faults In Semiconductor Random Access Memories, Richard I. Subrin

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Random-access memory (RAM) testing to detect unrestricted pattern-sensitive faults (PSFs) is impractical due to the size of the memory checking sequence required. A formal model for restricted PSFs in RAMs called adjacent-pattern interference faults (APIFs) is presented. A test algorithm capable of detecting APIFs in RAMs requiring a minimum number of memory operations is then developed.

The Transgenerational Effects Of Father-Daughter Incest, Kevin M. Conlee Oct 1981

The Transgenerational Effects Of Father-Daughter Incest, Kevin M. Conlee

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The notion of "Transgenerationality" as it pertains to father-daughter incest, has been the source of speculation in research on incest. This study examines the relationship between the manifestation of family system factors often found in father-daughter incest families and the incidence of childhood sexual experience reported by parents actively or passively participating in this dysfunctional system. Fathers sexually abused or witnesses to incestuous relationships in childhood appear to most extensively violate the incest taboo. Mothers in incestuous family's who were victims of sexual assault as children tend to function in more stereotypic incest family systems as described routinely in the …

The Gradient Effect Of Homoeotic Transformations In The Tumorous-Head Mutant Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Julia L. Cook Oct 1981

The Gradient Effect Of Homoeotic Transformations In The Tumorous-Head Mutant Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Julia L. Cook

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Abnormalities in the eye of tumorous-head Drosophila melanogaster were compositely mapped to their respective positions in an archetypal eye. A dorso-ventrally oriented restriction line in the posterior eye, similar to that observed by Campos-Ortega and Waitz (1978) and Baker (1978) through clonal analysis, was observed. Restrictive areas that parallel and probably coincide with hose previously disclosed by Campos-Ortega (1978) were also demonstrated in both the dorsal and ventral eye. Transformation of tumorous-head Drosophila melanogaster were examined in order to investigate region specific correlations between head structure and their homoeotic replacements. Five different tumorous-head strains were analyzed and compared for maximum …

Synthesis And Evaluation Of Polymer Supported Homogenous Oxidation Catalysts, Raymond J. Riley Oct 1981

Synthesis And Evaluation Of Polymer Supported Homogenous Oxidation Catalysts, Raymond J. Riley

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Polystyrene bis(salicylaldehyde)-propylene-1,3-diiminato Cobalt (II) [salen] and Polystyrene bis(2,4-pentanedione)-propylene-1,3-diiminato Cobalt (II) [BAE] were prepared stepwise from chloromethylated polystyrene. In addition, a new preparation of a Schiff base was attempted resulting in Polystyrene bis(salicylaldehyde)-isobutylene-1,3-diiminoato Cobalt (II) being produced. Optimum reaction conditions were determined with regard tot ime, temperature, reaction ratios and solvent for each step for the reaction. The ability of the above named Cobalt (II) Schiff bases to oxidize 3-methyl indole to give the corresponding o-formylaminoacetophenone was also studied. One polymer-bound Schiff base cobalt catalyst (co-salen) demonstrated a very small amount of catalytic activity resulting in a minimum amount of o-formylaminoacetophenone …

Movements And Feeding Ecology Of Immature Green Turtles (Chelonia Mydas) In Mosquito Lagoon, Florida, Mary T. Mendonca Oct 1981

Movements And Feeding Ecology Of Immature Green Turtles (Chelonia Mydas) In Mosquito Lagoon, Florida, Mary T. Mendonca

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The seasonal and diel movements of fourteen immature green turtles (Chelonia mydas) in Mosquito, Lagoon, Florida were monitored using sonic telemetry. The feeding ecology of this turtle population was also studied using dissection and stomach flushing techniques. An attempt was made to relate the movement patterns of the turtles to their feeding habits. The immature green turtles were found to make seemingly random, long distance movements (X╠äkm moved/day=7.79) and to remain in deeper waters (X╠ädepth=1.63m), apparently not feeding, when water temperatures fell below 19┬░C. When average water temperatures ranged between 19-25┬░C, the turtles were found primarily in shallow waters (X╠ädepth=1.1m) …

Heat Transfer Analysis Of A Lamphouse From A Typical Color Photographic Printer, William A. Toy Oct 1981

Heat Transfer Analysis Of A Lamphouse From A Typical Color Photographic Printer, William A. Toy

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

High-speed operatorless photographic printers require high illumination levels at the negative print gate from lamps with stable color temperatures. The lamps using in these applications give off a large amount of heat radiation that is harmful to photographic emulsions as well as printer components and must be removed. This report describes how a typical photographic printer lamphouse separates the visible energy from the infrared, delivers the visible energy to the negative to be printed, and removes the infrared energy from the housing. This report also develops a set of empirically derived equations, which analytically describe the cooling mechanisms. These equations …

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

One of the major programs to abate the deterioration of water quality in the Lake Okeechobee watershed was the addition of detention-retention facilities. The microbial biochemical potential of two different detention-retention marshes in the Kissimmee River Valley were examined to determine their effectiveness to improve water quality. The kinetics of decomposition and nutrient mineralization and assimilation, as mediated by microorganisms, and the enumeration of microorganisms capable of utilizing various substrates were studied. Various communities within each marsh were studied during a 2-year period. The decomposition rates of 3 plant substrates were determined. Chitin was used as a standard for organic …

Crying And Child Abuse: A Survey Of Response To Infant Cry-Signals, Robert E. Wright Oct 1981

Crying And Child Abuse: A Survey Of Response To Infant Cry-Signals, Robert E. Wright

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

We compared the ability of several groups of women to distinguish infant cry-signals. The cry-signals were taped reproductions of the Wasz-Hockert et al., (1964) study. Subjects were mothers and non-mother practical nursing students and mothers known to have battered their children. The results supported previous findings on ability to recognize cry-signals by mothers and non-mothers. The findings were not supportive of our primary hypothesis to determine if abusive mothers were less likely to correctly identify infant cry-signals than non-abusive mothers.

Assessing The Economic Feasibility Of Synthetic Natural Gas Under Conditions Of Uncertainty, Mohammad M. Iranmanesh Oct 1981

Assessing The Economic Feasibility Of Synthetic Natural Gas Under Conditions Of Uncertainty, Mohammad M. Iranmanesh

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The science of synthetic fuel production began in the seventeenth century. However, large-scale production of synthetic fuels started in the early 1900's and, for several decades, gas manufactured from coal significantly contributed to the U.S. economy. The production of synthetic fuels declined due to increases in the price of coal and discoveries of predominantly methane natural gas. Today, an extensive network of pipelines is used to transmit and distribute natural gas for industrial and residential applications. The decline of natural gas reserves in the United States, in conjunction with the availability of very large coal reserves, has provided the incentive …

A Synchronous Phase Detection System For An Optical Interferometric Sensor, Ira J. Bush Oct 1981

A Synchronous Phase Detection System For An Optical Interferometric Sensor, Ira J. Bush

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A system has been developed to accurately detect phase produced in optical interferometric sensors. The system employs optical heterodyning and synchronously detects optical phase by feeding back an error signal to a phase modulator in the reference leg of the interferometer. This system is seen to have properties similar to a phase-locked loop used for the demodulation of FM signals. The system is modeled and found to be of second order and nonlinear. A linear approximation to the original model serves to accurately describe the system in synchronous operation and is corroborated with well matched empirical data. The nonlinear model …

An Energy Resource Allocation Model For The University Of Central Florida Central Energy Plant, Mohammed A. Chamma Oct 1981

An Energy Resource Allocation Model For The University Of Central Florida Central Energy Plant, Mohammed A. Chamma

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The demand for energy increases every year, and it is important that we ensure that the energy consumed is used efficiently. This study examines a system which provides energy in multiple forms from multiple energy sources using multiple energy conversion equipment. Such a system is termed a Central Energy Plan (CEP). A linear programming model was formulated to provide a close approximation of a CEP operation. It was used to determine the optimal operating configuration, that is, which equipment should be on or off at a particular time of the day to minimize the operating cost of the plant while …

Land Grants, Land Use, Land Alienation, Mary K. Garner Oct 1981

Land Grants, Land Use, Land Alienation, Mary K. Garner

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Governments often used the promise of land as a means to implement policy. Whether the land was in the form of a large grant to a successful explorer, or in the offer of a homestead on the frontier, the motive for such grants was seldom entirely altruistic. Most grants contained stipulations for settlement and cultivation because a growing population was necessary for economic development. Rulers of Florida also offered land grants to encourage a particular religion, to protect shipping, or to establish protection against Indian attacks. When Florida became part of the United States, large sections of the territory were …

Selective Removal Of Color, Toc, And Thm Precursors From A Highly Colored Recycled Magnesium Sludge Using Granular Activated Carbon, Kathleen O. Gill Oct 1981

Selective Removal Of Color, Toc, And Thm Precursors From A Highly Colored Recycled Magnesium Sludge Using Granular Activated Carbon, Kathleen O. Gill

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The study investigated the ability of granular activated carbon (F-400) to remove organic color, TOCk and THM precursors from a highly organic-laden recycled magnesium sludge without reducing the magnesium concentration. This treatment was attempted in order to render the sludge a more effective coagulant for surface water purification. Adsorption effectiveness was assessed through Freundlich isotherms and continuous-flow GAC columns, with both procedures conducted at three pH values. Color and TOC were adsorbed more effectively at lower pH values, while adsorption of THM precursors was inhibited at low pH. Magnesium was not significantly adsorbed by the carbon. The carbon treatment of …

Trihalomethane Precursor Reduction Using Magnesium Coagulation, Christianne C. Ferraro Oct 1981

Trihalomethane Precursor Reduction Using Magnesium Coagulation, Christianne C. Ferraro

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the effectiveness of the magnesium coagulation process in reduction of trihalomethane (THM) precursors. The water was obtained from Lake Washington, a highly colored potable water supply which is used by the City of Melbourne, Florida. The THM concentrations in the finished water at Melbourne currently exceed the THM standard of 0.1 mg/l. For Lake Washington water, treatment varies according to seasonal changes in water quality. During the dry period, the recycle magnesium does not perform effectively as a coagulant for THM precursor removal. This is because of the high levels of magnesium in the late water at …
