A Multidimensional Analysis Of Stress Among Law Enforcement Officers And Insurance Underwriters, Susan K. Daniel

This study compared stress levels between law enforcement officers and the civilian population as measured by systolic blood pressure, the State-Trait Personality Inventory, and the Anger Reaction Scale. The relationship between systolic blood pressure and the self report instruments was also investigated. Thirty Deputy Sheriffs from the street patrol division of the Sheriff's Department served as the law enforcement group and 20 underwriters for the Hartford Insurance Company were the civilian or control group. the Deputy Sheriffs had significantly higher average systolic blood pressure than the Hartford employees with the effects of covariates removed. Corporate Burnout And Its Nonwork-Related Correlates, Kimberly J. Redmond

Seventy-two employees working in an engineering firm completed a series of surveys assessing their level of job burnout, number of recent stressful life and work events experienced, level or aerobic fitness, and the degree to which each was overweight. A significant and positive relationship was found between the number of stressful work events experienced and job burnout. Multiple regression analysis showed that the number of stressful work events experienced, level of aerobic fitness, and percentage of pounds overweight jointly and significantly contributed to the relationship with job burnout. The Effects Of Physical Fitness On Physiological Arousal And Self-Reports Of Stress, Barbara Rene Staggs

Fitness level and trait anxiety were used as "independent" variables in a multiple regression study with physiological arousal and self-reported anxiety to a stressor as the "dependent" variables. Fitness level was determined by an established rating system of frequency, type, and duration of aerobic activity in which the subject reportedly engaged. Trait anxiety level was assessed by the trait portion of the State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). Sixty undergraduate subjects were exposed to a situational stressor of reciting a memorized paragraph while viewing themselves being videotaped. Stress in organizations is a critical phenomenon of our times. Research to date has focused on specific job-related stressors such as role conflict, ambiguity and supervisory relationships utilizing satisfaction and performance as outcome variables. Results have often been ambiguous and non-conclusive. However, a variety of common physiological responses have been found to play a major role in stress reaction and management. Furthermore, numerous studies have demonstrated a moderating effect of exercise on physiological stress responses. An assessment was made of the relationship between physical fitness level, anxiety level and Type A behavior in a non-clinical sample of healthy middle-age adults. Forty nine mid-level managers from Westinghouse Steam Generator and Turbine Division, world Headquarters participated by filling out a battery of tests, including the Jenkins Activity Survey, the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, and a fitness questionnaire. No significant relationship was found between physical fitness level and Type A behavior. A significant negative relationship was found between physical fitness level and trait-anxiety. Trend analysis revealed a significant linear decrease in mean anxiety scores for groups of increasing levels …

The purpose of this study is to investigate the moderating effects of personality variables on the relationship of role stress to performance. The sample consisted of 45 males and 57 females from undergraduate psychology classes at the University of Central Florida. Subjects completed the Adjective Check List (Gough & Heilbrun, 1965), a written decision-making exercise, and a derivative of the role conflict and role ambiguity scales developed by Rizzo, House, and Lirtzman (1970). these yielded personality, performance, and stress scores for each subject. The purpose of this study was to obtain data on the impact of machine-paced industrial inspection tasks upon workers. Psychological and physiological stress reaction measures were gathered from subjects under simulated work conditions. Typical stress indicators such as heart rate, electromyograph readings, temperature, and psychological stress scales comprised the raw data. After being subjected to statistical analysis, results and conclusions will be discussed in order to gain knowledge and insight as to the stress reactions of the machine-paced inspection worker, and to provide implications for further research.

The main purpose of the present study was to determine empirically whether differences in perceived role conflict, role ambiguity, and Type A proclivities are associated with differences in perceived psychosomatic dysfunction. Moreover, an ancillary purpose of the present study was to determine whether differences in perceived job performance were associated with Type A-B tendencies and perceived role conflict and ambiguity. Data for 72 workers from all levels of two types of organizations (i.e., citizen protection and health) were obtained.
