Epsilon Precedence Grammars And Languages, Masoud T. Milani Jan 1986

Epsilon Precedence Grammars And Languages, Masoud T. Milani

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The classes of simple and weak precedence grammars are generalized to include ε-rules (productions with the empty right parts). The descriptive power of epsilon simple precedence (ESP) grammars increases directly with the number of ε-rules permitted; the class of ESP grammars with no ε-rules, ESP0, is identical to the class of simple precedence grammars; ESP grammars with at most one ε-rule, ESP1, define a class of languages which properly includes the class of ESP0 languages, but is itself properly included in the class of deterministic, context-free languages. In general, ESP grammars having at most i …

Postpartum Job Involvement, Rosemary D. Garris Jan 1986

Postpartum Job Involvement, Rosemary D. Garris

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The effect of mothers' employment on their children has been investigated repeatedly; however, there is little research on how motherhood affects womens' employment attitudes. The research being reported here addresses this question. Subjects consisted of 126 working pregnant women and a comparable group of 45 working non-pregnant women who completed four questionnaires soliciting measures of the following attitudes: job involvement, home role attitude, employment role attitude, and interaction strain. Modest support was found for the prediction that giving birth would affect mothers' attitudes. Job involvement was found to decline, and home role attitude was found to be less favorable after …

The Effect Of Food On Reproduction In The Sailfin Molly, Poecilia Iatipinna (Poeciliidae, Rebecca B. Smith Jan 1986

The Effect Of Food On Reproduction In The Sailfin Molly, Poecilia Iatipinna (Poeciliidae, Rebecca B. Smith

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Sailfin molly populations often experience a midsummer slump in reproduction, and it has been suggested that this slump is caused by food shortage. A food supplementation experiment on a natural population of mollies was done in 1983. Excess food did not directly affect the fecundity of females in the field. A laboratory experiment was designed to determine the food level on reproduction in females. Ration had the greatest effect on somatic condition and growth, indirectly influencing fecundity. Two explanations for this strategy are suggested. A significant difference in brood size and size of young was observed between the field and …

Individual Differences In Training Performance: The Derivation Of A Prediction Model, Brenda J. Hoskin Jan 1986

Individual Differences In Training Performance: The Derivation Of A Prediction Model, Brenda J. Hoskin

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This research examines the use of non-cognitive personality measures as supplements to traditional cognitive ability measures for predicting training performance. The Hogan Personality Inventory (HPI) significantly predicted an overall performance measure (R2 = .17) for Navy BE&E Students (N = 155). However, when applied as a supplemental predictor composite to the military cognitive measure (ASVAB), the resulting increase in R2 (.04) failed to attain significance, F(6, 144) = 2.17, p > .05). In further analyses, several HPI and ASVAB scales combined to significantly predict selected performance criteria. The ASVAB remained as the primary source of information. It is quite …

Separation Plane Priority In Computer Image Generation, Keith A. Stump Jan 1986

Separation Plane Priority In Computer Image Generation, Keith A. Stump

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Flight simulators are devices in which air crews can be trained without the use of actual aircraft. Potentially dangerous maneuvers, such as air-to-air refueling, and destructive exercises, such as evasive action from weaponry or aerial dogfights, can be practiced repeatedly with no risk to pilot or crew. Flight simulators are cost effective since the fuel costs associated with training pilots in actual aircraft can be excessive. Flight simulators offer an alternate training method with reduced cost. The task of a visual flight simulator is to present the trainee with scenes representative of those that would be seen if the actual …

Florida Macrolichens As Potential Bioindicators Of Environmental Quality: A Baseline Study, Harry V. Neal Jan 1986

Florida Macrolichens As Potential Bioindicators Of Environmental Quality: A Baseline Study, Harry V. Neal

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Lichens have been used extensively and with considerable success as bioindicators of atmospheric pollution in North America and Europe for more than thirty years. Little research has followed in tropical and subtropical regions where population growth is rapid and environmental pressures unprecedented. However, taxa used as bioindicators in other studies and/or taxa having this potential, occur naturally in Central Florida. A new potential major source of pollution, the coal-fired Curtis H. Stanton Energy Center, is about to begin operation providing the opportunity to determine the extent of impact. Therefore, lichen monitoring sites have been established and the collection of baseline …

Comparable Worth: Gender Bias In Salary Administration, Delora Mcdaniel

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Comparable worth, an idea that is playing an increasingly important role in the wage and compensation issues of the 1980s, is examined in a controlled classroom setting. Salary as a function of rater gender and job stereotyping (as measured on a ranked order) was examined using undergraduate student subjects. Seven position descriptions from a savings and loan association were subjectively evaluated. The subjects assigned salaries, rank ordered the positions on a male to female (male=l, female=?) continuum and completed an Attitude toward Women Scale (AWS). Modest support was found for the hypothesis that salary would be a function of rater …

Superior-Subordinate Perceptional Congruence Of Promotion Criteria Importance And Its Relationship To Job Satisfaction, Stacie L. Clark Jan 1986

Superior-Subordinate Perceptional Congruence Of Promotion Criteria Importance And Its Relationship To Job Satisfaction, Stacie L. Clark

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The degree of perceptual congruence of the importance of promotion criteria to superiors and subordinates was investigated. The relationship of congruence to job satisfaction was also evaluated. Fifty-two student workers and their superiors participated in the study. Perception of promotion criteria importance was measured through the rating of a list of promotion criteria using a seven point scale. An average discrepancy score of 7.925 was obtained between superiors' and subordinates' ratings indicating a significant degree of discrepancy, t(50) = 25.04, p< .001. Job satisfaction was measured using the Job Descriptive Index (JDI) and was correlated with the discrepancy scores. Perceptual congruence of promotion criteria was found to be significantly related to subordinates' satisfaction with supervision on the job, r = -.276, p < .05, and satisfaction with present pay, r = -.299, p < .05.

A One Step Collision Detection Method For Computer Graphics Programs, Gregory T. Eichner Jan 1986

A One Step Collision Detection Method For Computer Graphics Programs, Gregory T. Eichner

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The topic of this thesis is a collection detection algorithm for use in computer programs dealing in three dimensional graphics. Collision detection is usually accomplished by breaking the movement into small steps and checking if a collision has occurred at each of these discrete steps. This method is a very time-intensive way to detect for collisions and therefore, inefficient for a system which typically moves in large increments. For this kind of system, a method could be developed which checks once for collisions without dividing the move into multiple small increments. The subject of this paper is an algorithm, developed …

Cost Effective Design Of The Activated Sludge Wastewater Treatment System, Robert P. Huguenard Jan 1986

Cost Effective Design Of The Activated Sludge Wastewater Treatment System, Robert P. Huguenard
