Theoretical Predictions Of Flow Profiles In Capillary Blood Vessels, Eileen Hallman Jan 1972

Theoretical Predictions Of Flow Profiles In Capillary Blood Vessels, Eileen Hallman

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to illustrate the nature of blood flow within capillaries by using familiar mathematical techniques. Because the circulatory system is so complex, the fluid dynamics of the system is prefaced by a discussion of the circulatory physiology in terms of geometry and physics. The understanding of the basic structures and functions of the circulatory components necessarily precedes the justification of assumptions. Several mathematical models which attempt to describe the fluid dynamics of blood flow phenomena are presented and discussed. The results of these models are correlated with existing experimental data in order to determine which …

Optimization Analysis Of A Simple Position Control System, Arthur G. Cannon Jan 1972

Optimization Analysis Of A Simple Position Control System, Arthur G. Cannon

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

One of the problem areas of modern optimal control theory is the definition of suitable performance indices. This thesis demonstrates a rational method of establishing a quadratic performance index derived from a desired system model. Specifically, a first order model is used to provide a quadratic performance index for which a second order system is optimized. Extension of the method to higher order systems, while requiring more computations, involves no additional theoretical complexities.

An Investigation Of Methods For Reuse Of Rubber Tires, Charles Edward Armbruster

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Methods of reusing/recycling the more than 250 million automobile and truck tires which are worn out each year were investigated. The existing methods of reusing tires account for about 30 percent of the volume of scrap tires generated each year. These methods are, Retreading, Reclaiming (by reducing to ground up rubber and fiber), and Tire Splitting (stamp items out of sidewall and tread areas). Several possibilities for reusing/recycling the unused 70 percent were discovered. These methods are as follows: Destructive Distillation -- a method of recovering chemicals from tires by pyrolitic action. It is anticipated that eventually as much as …

The Restoration Of Lake Waters, Charles James Boyter Jan 1972

The Restoration Of Lake Waters, Charles James Boyter

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Lake restoration procedures are reviewed with the objective of making recommendations toward future lake restorations for central Florida lakes. The progress of drawdown for restoration is examined. A total phosphorus model is developed for Lake Eola to predict the success of the drawdown. No one restoration procedure should be applied to every lake in central Florida. Each situation must be studied separately. It appears that lake drawdown was the best technique to use for Lake Eola. However, the stormwater inputs and free-flowing drains must be purified to insure the success of the drawdown or the Lake will return within the …

Localized Wastewater Treatment Facilities, Robert Russell Garrett Jan 1972

Localized Wastewater Treatment Facilities, Robert Russell Garrett

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The report describes an alternative to the use of septic tanks for invidual dwellings. The major problems confronting the larger wastewater treatment plants (0.012 to 10 million gallons per day) in central Florida are also discussed. Solutions in this report are for individual and multi-unit dwelling treatment systems (to 0.06 MGD). these units can provide 90% biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and suspended solids (SS) removal in accord with new state and county regulations. A comparison of the large versus the small plants reveals that small innovative plants, though more expensive, are more environmentally sound than the poorly operated large facilities. …

A Mathematical Model For Determining The Thermal Distribution Resulting From Discharge Of A Heated Effluent, Alan H. Epstein Jan 1972

A Mathematical Model For Determining The Thermal Distribution Resulting From Discharge Of A Heated Effluent, Alan H. Epstein

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A mathematical model is presented for the problem of determining the two-dimensional temperature distribution resulting from the discharge of a heated effluent into a shallow, quiescent receptacle. The physical model of the problem is the two-dimensional jet augmented by an imposed condition of viscous drag due to bottom friction effects. By virtue of the assumption that the physical properties of the effluent are independent of temperature over the operational temperature range of the plume, the analysis separates the total problem into a flow problem and a temperature problem. Solution of the temperature distribution is accomplished both analytically and numerically. Analytically, …

Minimum Weight Design Of Stiffened Cylindrical Shells Using Structural Synthesis, Joseph Eugene Heckelbeck Jan 1972

Minimum Weight Design Of Stiffened Cylindrical Shells Using Structural Synthesis, Joseph Eugene Heckelbeck

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Several search methods for unconstrained minimization in the minimum weight design of a stiffened cylindrical shell are investigated. The cylindrical shell, under study, is stiffened with bar shaped stiffeners in the longitudinal and circumferential directions, and capable of being loaded both axially and radially with up to ten separate load conditions. For this investigation, it was necessary to alter an unconstrained minimization program for use on the IBM 360 computer by employing double precision techniques. The computer runs obtained on this system are compared with those provided by the prior work of William Morrow and Lucien Schmit. The results show, …

Suppression Of Turbofan And Turbojet Engine Generated Noise, Harry David Master Jan 1972

Suppression Of Turbofan And Turbojet Engine Generated Noise, Harry David Master

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Every advance in the transformation of heat energy into mechanical energy has involved a noise problem, and in general it increases with the power production. The jet airplane is a good example: the large-scale turbulence of the exhaust gases in the jet forms an unusually intense source of sound the control of which is quite difficult. The additionally generated fan noises add characteristic fan tones which are particularly noticeable on landing approaches. the human ear is the vulnerable receiver of these noises, and the problem becomes one of deciding how much jet engine noise reduction is required for the comfort …

Automation In Banking, Donald P. Matteson Jan 1972

Automation In Banking, Donald P. Matteson

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

It has been estimated that the Apollo Program, which placed a man on the moon, each year produced enough paper work, that if put on one stack, would reach to the moon. The forthcoming Space Shuttle Program will require even more documentation; however, present plans call for very little paperwork. The necessary documentation will instead be created, updated and retained in a large computer data base with access throughout the country. Present technology will support this system. The banking industry has been faced with a similar problem in the processing of demand deposit records (checks) and other repetitive tasks. Banks …

The Operations Research Approach For An Effective Management Information System, Joel L. Mutzman Jan 1972

The Operations Research Approach For An Effective Management Information System, Joel L. Mutzman

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This report serves as an overview to the design of an effective Management Information System (MIS) by incorporating the modeling techniques of an Operations Research (OR) approach. It will be shown that the consideration of OR input requirements mixed with the information requirements for a data base existing at the everyday accounting and operational level creates a responsible management control and decision-making tool. This mix of OR and everyday information approach varies as a function of the managerial activities and the organizational level of effort. In lieu of designing a "total" MIS system, MIS designers should structure a loosely connected …
