Employment, Income, And Poverty In Kalamazoo City Core Neighborhoods, Val Klomparens Dec 2023

Employment, Income, And Poverty In Kalamazoo City Core Neighborhoods, Val Klomparens

Reports

This report employs a traditional methodology using American Community Survey data to examine employment, income, and poverty in three neighborhoods in Kalamazoo, Michigan: Eastside, Northside, and Edison. These neighborhoods are studied with an emphasis on eligibility status for the Distressed Area Recompete Pilot Program, administered through the U.S. Economic Development Administration. Eastside residents are unique in that a larger share earn income through wages or employment than do Michigan residents, yet their median income falls below those at the county and state levels in a statistically significant way. The Edison neighborhood is characterized by greater income inequality than the other …

Reports

The Initial Phase of the project (Phase 1), used remote sensing and other data collection to develop a method for determining which waterbodies on the Northern Neck of Virginia need dredging. The analysis included most of the waterbodies in the counties of Lancaster, Northumberland, Richmond, and Westmoreland. From this analysis, 19 waterbodies emerged as potentially needing dredged based on physical parameters and residential and economic usage (Milligan et al., 2023).

In this Feasibility Phase (Phase 2), more detailed site data were collected to provide data to the localities for consideration. These tasks were included in the analysis:

1. Historic shore …

Reports

The purpose of this project is to develop a regional dredging program for the localities of the Northern Neck. This report encompasses Phase 1 of the project, which included creating a database of waterbodies in Lancaster, Northumberland, Richmond, and Westmoreland Counties and the Town of Colonial Beach along the Potomac and Rappahannock Rivers and Chesapeake Bay. Generally, these waterbodies can be categorized into three basic types of shallow draft channels: federally-authorized to include aids to navigation (ATONS), non-federal with ATONS, and non-federal without ATONs. Along the Northern Neck, presently identified, are 13 federal channels, 37 non-federal channels in creeks with …

The Development Of Strategies For Coastal Wetland Conservation Prioritization In Virginia Under Climate Change, Molly Mitchell, Z. Lv, Bryan Watts, Chance Hines, Kory Angstadt, David Stanhope, Kirk J. Havens, Donna Marie Bilkovic, Karinna Nunez Dec 2023

The Development Of Strategies For Coastal Wetland Conservation Prioritization In Virginia Under Climate Change, Molly Mitchell, Z. Lv, Bryan Watts, Chance Hines, Kory Angstadt, David Stanhope, Kirk J. Havens, Donna Marie Bilkovic, Karinna Nunez

Reports

This project focuses on developing strategies to improve our understanding and strengthen the sustainability of Virginia’s coastal wetlands to climate change impacts. Marsh migration under sea level rise is a primary pathway for marsh persistence. However, the resulting extent and habitat function of the newly migrated marsh is still being explored. In addition, accelerating sea level rise suggests that coastal wetlands need frequent monitoring to assess change. This project addresses Virginia regional priority 1, to develop a framework to overcome barriers to use existing wetland assessment methodologies and studies for restoration/compensatory mitigation projects to improve functional performance of aquatic resources …

Water Main Break Rates In The Usa And Canada: A Comprehensive Study, Steven L. Barfuss Dec 2023

Water Main Break Rates In The Usa And Canada: A Comprehensive Study, Steven L. Barfuss

Reports

Deteriorating Infrastructure

Municipalities and the people they serve depend on pipe networks that provide safe drinking water. This piping is underground, out of sight, and often neglected.

Overall assessment of water infrastructure condition is not good. Using the US as an example:

  • In 2009, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) issued a US report card and gave a D- to drinking water infrastructure.
  • In 2017, the grade improved to a D.
  • In 2021, the grade was raised to a C-, better but still not good.
  • Utilities are currently losing 11% of their water to leakage.
  • Pipe life estimates of …

Les Taux De Rupture De Conduites D’Eau Principales Aux États-Unis Et Au Canada : Une Étude Complète, Steven L. Barfuss

Reports

Confirmation Report: Modelling Interlocutor Confusion In Situated Human Robot Interaction, Na Li Oct 2023

Confirmation Report: Modelling Interlocutor Confusion In Situated Human Robot Interaction, Na Li

Reports

Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) is an important but challenging field focused on improving the interaction between humans and robots such to make the interaction more intelligent and effective. However, building a natural conversational HRI is an interdisciplinary challenge for scholars, engineers, and designers. It is generally assumed that the pinnacle of human- robot interaction will be having fluid naturalistic conversational interaction that in important ways mimics that of how humans interact with each other. This of course is challenging at a number of levels, and in particular there are considerable difficulties when it comes to naturally monitoring and responding to the …

Sea Water Temperature And Cod Spawning, Garrett Bellin, Roger L. Mann Oct 2023

Sea Water Temperature And Cod Spawning, Garrett Bellin, Roger L. Mann

Reports

As the ocean temperature rises following recent global warming trends, Atlantic cod populations have begun to disappear from their normal habitats on the east coast. This trend has been affecting aquatic life and in turn, access to the region’s fish resources. GIS analysis of this issue has enabled the creation of time sliders showing the change in temperature over time in relation to the change in cod distribution and the creation of habitat suitability indexes to show the sharp decline in suitable area for cod to spawn and live, since the onset of ocean and global warming trends. Marine biologists …

South Central Regional Cog 2023 Equity Profile, Camille Seaberry, Kelly Davila, Mark Abraham, Datahaven Connecticut Data Hub

Reports

Throughout most of the measures in this report, there are important differences by race/ethnicity and neighborhood that reflect differences in access to resources and other social needs. Wherever possible, data are presented with racial/ethnic breakdowns, as defined by existing federal data collection standards. However, for smaller groups or more detailed breakdowns, some values may not be available or have less reliable data. In these cases, values are marked as “N/A,” not available. Federal and statewide approaches to data collection, including small sample sizes, tend to hide disparities within certain population groups. This does not mean that a given population is …

Final Report An Assessment Of Sea Scallop Abundance And Distribution In The Nantucket Lightship Closed Area, Sally Roman, David Rudders

Reports

For the sea scallop, Placopecten magellanicus, the concepts of space and time have emerged as the basis of an effective management tool. The strategy of rotational area management has aided in the sustainability of the resource. Since 2003 with the adoption of Amendment 10 to the Fishery Management Plan (FMP), rotational area management has provided a mechanism to protect juvenile scallops from fishing mortality by closing areas based on scallop abundance and observed length distributions. Approximately half of the sea scallop industry’s current annual landings are attributed to areas under this rotational harvest strategy. While this represents a management success, …
