Toxic Organic Compounds In Surface Sediments From Elizabeth And Patapsco Rivers And Estuaries, Rudolph H. Bieri, Chris Hein, Robert J. Huggett, Philip Shou, Harold Slone, Craig Smith, Chih-Wu Su

Reports

This study is an extension of a Chespeake Bay-wide analysis of toxic organic substances into the Elizabeth and Patapsco River subestuaries. Twenty-eight surface sediment samples from the.Elizabeth River and 40 surface sediment samples from the Patapsco, were analyzed in detail for the presence of mainly aromatic and polar organic compounds. Approximately 310 distinct compounds were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in the Elizabeth River samples, and about 480 in the Patapsco. Total aromatic concentrations ranged from 440,000 to 3,100 ppb in the Elizabeth and from 2.7 x 106 to 6100 ppb in the Patapsco. Similar to observation in the.Chesapeake Bay, …

Water Quality Trends In The Lynnhaven Bay : A Report To The Hampton Roads Water Quality Agency, Bruce J. Neilson Nov 1982

Water Quality Trends In The Lynnhaven Bay : A Report To The Hampton Roads Water Quality Agency, Bruce J. Neilson

Reports

The Lynnhaven Bay system is perceived by many to have a high value because of its aesthetic qualities. It is an attractive body of water to live by and enjoy. Its general cleanliness and combination of broad bays and small coves make it ideal for sailing, boating and other recreational activities. Historically the Lynnhaven oyster·has been acclaimed as an epicurean delight. These positive qualities and proximity to more urbanized areas have attracted many to live either on its shore or within the basin. What was almost entirely rural is becoming more and more urbanized. The urbanization has been underway for …

Management Practice Evaluation For Urban Areas In The Hampton Roads Vicinity: A Report To Hampton Roads Water Quality Agency, Gary F. Anderson, Bruce J. Neilson, Donald H. Campbell

Reports

Data was collected by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science from study sites in the designated Hampton Roads 208 area, and information from other studies published in the literature were used to examine the change in pollutant loadings brought about by the presence of management practices in urban test watersheds. The focus was on nutrients, BOD, and suspended solids.

Nansemond River, Study Of Leased Oyster Grounds In The Vicinity Of The Mills E. Godwin Jr. Bridge (After Construction), Paul C. Kendall, Dexter S. Haven, James R. Whitcomb Jul 1982

Nansemond River, Study Of Leased Oyster Grounds In The Vicinity Of The Mills E. Godwin Jr. Bridge (After Construction), Paul C. Kendall, Dexter S. Haven, James R. Whitcomb

Reports

Leased grounds were studied in the vicinity of the newly constructed Mills E. Godwin Jr, Bridge across the Nansemond River during April and May 1982 to determine if any significant changes had occurred in oyster density or bottom topography since an earlier study made in 1979 (prior to construction).

Oyster distribution outside the right-of-way in 1982 was essentially the same as in 1979. However two dug channels were seen in shallow water in the right-of-way: one was downriver of the present bridge; the second was at or near the site of the old bridge (which has been removed).

Metal Inventory And Fate Of Suspended Sediment In Chesapeake Bay, Maynard M. Nichols, Galen Thompson, Bruce Nelson Jun 1982

Metal Inventory And Fate Of Suspended Sediment In Chesapeake Bay, Maynard M. Nichols, Galen Thompson, Bruce Nelson

Reports

This report aims to provide new information that meets selected objectives of the EPA-States Taxies Plan of Action: i.e. (1) to determine the state of the Bay with respect to the distribution and concentration of selected metals in suspended material and fluid mud; (2) to establish the temooral variations of sediment and metal loading: (3) to identify potential zones of metal accumulation and trace their transport routes, and (4) to provide recommendations for monitoring contaminated sediment.

Field observations provide longitudinal coverage of the Bay with transects into Baltimore Harbor and Hampton Roads. They include contrasting conditions of seasonal high-low river …

Study Of Leased Oyster Ground At The Site Of The Proposed Rt.143 Bridge Across Hampton River, Paul C. Kendall, Dexter S. Haven

Reports

A study of leased oyster planting ground in the vicinity of the proposed Route 143 Bridge across Hampton River was made by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science in March 1982. The study was made at the request of the Virginia Department of Highways and Transportation in conjunction with Project 0143-114-102, RW-201.

Evaluation Of The Utah Operational Weather Modification Program, Geoffrey E. Hill Apr 1982

Evaluation Of The Utah Operational Weather Modification Program, Geoffrey E. Hill

Reports

This study is an evaluation of a winter orographic cloud seeding project in Utah. The evaluation is based upon both intensive field measurements and historic~l records. For the field measurements, ground and airborne data were collected during February and March, 1981 in the vicinity of the Tushar Mountains. In evaluating the physical data three aspects are emphasized: the dispersal of artificial ice nuclei, the distribution of supercooled liquid water, and the growth and trajectories of precipitation. Ground based measurements were made by K and X band radars, a dual frequency microwave radiometer, a network of precipitation gauges, an ice nucleus …

The Impact Of Low Salinities On James River Oyster Populations 1979-1980, Dexter S. Haven Feb 1982

The Impact Of Low Salinities On James River Oyster Populations 1979-1980, Dexter S. Haven

Reports

During the fall, winter and spring of 1979-1980 there was an extensive and prolonged mortality of the 1979 se•t of oysters in the James River, Virginia. Yearling oysters died at lesser rates, with mortalities starting in mid-winter. Small oysters showed moderate to 100% mortalities at two locations. Market-sized oysters showed the lowest mortality. Deaths were associated with prolonged periods of low salinity.

Hydrocarbon Fuel Chemistry : Sediment Water Interaction, William G. Macintyre, C. L. Smith, P. O. Defur, C. W. Su

Reports

The objective of this program was to determine the effect of sediments on aqueous solutions of selected United States Air Force (USAF} hydrocarbon fuels. Effects of sediment type, organic carbon content, pH, temperature and salinity on interaction of dissolved hydrocarbons with sediment were studied. The results of this work can be used to estimate the role of sediment hydrocarbon interaction terms in fate models of aqueous systems, such as the Environmental Protection Agency "EXAMS" model.

Reproduction Of Oysters In Virginia, Jay D. Andrews Jan 1982

Reproduction Of Oysters In Virginia, Jay D. Andrews

Reports

The seed-oyster area is located in a low-salinity sector of the James River where seasonal riverflows and resulting salinities vary widely. Low spring salinities, usually below 10 °/oo in April or May, eliminate most predators and diseases. Prior to 1960, spatfalls were, regular and moderate in intensity each year. High quality seed oysters 2 to 3 inches in size were produced with 1000 to 2000 thick-shelled oysters per bushel for use by private-ground planters. Following the advent of M. nelson! (MSX) in Chesapeake Bay in 1959, setting declined to about one-tenth previous levels and there were spatfall failures in many …
