Airport Ceos And The Decentralized System Of Airports: A Case Study, Marjan Mazza

Publications

The job of the airport CEO is complex with responsibility for the security and safety of a large and dynamic facility and, yet the FAA does not have regulatory qualification and performance standards for the position. The purpose of this qualitative multi-case study was to explore the primary attributes that could be the leading indicators in the event national standards for the hiring of airport CEOs are pursued at major commercial airports. The guiding conceptual framework of the study was to combine competency with the concept of training and development. Airport CEOs from six airport facilities were interviewed, and an …

Today’s vehicles are no longer stand-alone transportation means, due to the advancements on vehicle-tovehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications enabled to access the Internet via recent technologies in mobile communications, including WiFi, Bluetooth, 4G, and even 5G networks. The Internet of vehicles was aimed toward sustainable developments in transportation by enhancing safety and efficiency. The sensor-enabled intelligent automation of vehicles’ mechanical operations enhances safety in on-road traveling, and cooperative traffic information sharing in vehicular networks improves traveling efficiency.

A Mean-Risk Mixed Integer Nonlinear Program For Transportation Network Protection, Jie Lu, Akshay Gupte, Yongxi Huang Feb 2018

A Mean-Risk Mixed Integer Nonlinear Program For Transportation Network Protection, Jie Lu, Akshay Gupte, Yongxi Huang

Publications

This paper focuses on transportation network protection to hedge against extreme events such as earthquakes. Traditional two-stage stochastic programming has been widely adopted to obtain solutions under a risk-neutral preference through the use of expectations in the recourse function. In reality, decision makers hold different risk preferences. We develop a mean-risk two-stage stochastic programming model that allows for greater flexibility in handling risk preferences when allocating limited resources. In particular, the first stage minimizes the retrofitting cost by making strategic retrofit decisions whereas the second stage minimizes the travel cost. The conditional value-at-risk (CVaR) is included as the risk measure …

Public-Private Partnerships In Transportation: Lessons Learned For The New Space Era, Janet K. Tinoco Jan 2018

Public-Private Partnerships In Transportation: Lessons Learned For The New Space Era, Janet K. Tinoco

Publications

Entrepreneurial firms in the space sector have accomplished unimaginable feats unheard of just 20 years ago, such as reusable rockets and cargo launches to the International Space Station (ISS). Clearly, the private sector will continue to be a significant participant in the future of the space industry, partnering with governments and nations, to accomplish more with less. Likewise, the public sector must cope with decreased funding and worthy space objectives while balancing cost, risk, and return. Partnering with private enterprise is the best solution to meeting mandated objectives in space program advancement. This paper addresses partnerships in real property assets …

Background: Physical activity (PA) is a key performance indicator for policy documents in both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Building on baseline grades set in 2014, Ireland's second Report Card on Physical Activity for Children and Youth allows for continued surveillance of indicators related to PA in children and youth. Methods: Data and information were extracted and collated for 10 indicators and graded using an international standardized grading system. Results: Overall, 7 grades stayed the same, 2 increased, and 1 decreased. Grades were assigned as follows: Overall PA, D (an increase); Sedentary Behavior (TV), C-; Physical Education, D-; …

A Chi-Square Analysis Of The Fall 2013 Transportation Survey: Students At The University At Albany, Cassidy Drasser May 2015

A Chi-Square Analysis Of The Fall 2013 Transportation Survey: Students At The University At Albany, Cassidy Drasser

Publications

There are over 6,500 students at the University at Albany who live off-campus and commute to school. In order to reduce their carbon footprint, the University at Albany must investigate what influences the students’ transportation choices and their alternative transportation literacy. Therefore, the Office of Environmental Sustainability, Geography and Urban Planning Department and the Office of Institutional Research, Planning and Effectiveness conducted a survey in the fall of 2013 for the students at the University at Albany. After examining the results, the gender and minority distributions were not representative of the student population. The significant associations that were prominent were …

Wireless Global Positioning System Fleet Tracking System At The University At Albany, Kyle Simpson, Mary Ellen Mallia Jul 2014

Wireless Global Positioning System Fleet Tracking System At The University At Albany, Kyle Simpson, Mary Ellen Mallia

Publications

This report provides an overview of the project undertaken at the University at Albany to make alternative transportation a more viable option by implementing a GPS Tracking System on the University bus fleet and broadcasting the bus locations to commuters via the internet and a “smart phone” application. According to a survey administered by the University, students and faculty identified convenience as the number one barrier to taking the bus. In line with its commitment to environmental sustainability, University at Albany wished to increase mass transit ridership by making it more convenient and predictable, thus favorably impacting commuting patterns. This …

Reduction Of Transportation Greenhouse Gas Emissions To Mitigate Climate Change Impacts, Mary Snow, Richard Snow May 2014

Reduction Of Transportation Greenhouse Gas Emissions To Mitigate Climate Change Impacts, Mary Snow, Richard Snow

Publications

Weather affects almost all modes of transportation in a modern society, and likewise, transportation has an enormous impact on the weather. Transportation greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) impact climate change, which impacts transportation in return. Reduction of transportation impacts on climate change can mitigate the reverse climate change impacts on transportation. This paper examines the relationship between transportation and climate change and establishes prospective solutions to reduce transportation greenhouse gas emission impacts on climate change and mitigate the reverse climate change impacts on transportation.

Case Study: University At Albany Develops A Guide To Examine Commuting Behavior And Patterns, Catherine T. Lawson, Mary Ellen Mallia, Chris Franklin, Benjamin Fischer, David Hogenkamp, Matt Ryan

Publications

The University at Albany conducted an examination of campus commuting patterns and behaviors over an eighteen month period. The components included a review of existing options, the development of GIS maps indicating origin points of commutes, a survey of campus perceptions of barriers to using alternative transportation and on-time tracking of mass transit offerings. The study revealed that the success of alternative transportation is hindered by limitations in bus routes and frequency in scheduling, the need for commuters to make additional trips outside their commute route and a distrust of bus reliability.

The rising cost of transportation has become a major concern to Americans at every level of the economic ladder. Indeed, recent price hikes in gasoline have affected practically all other products. An optimistic America has watched the per-gallon price of gasoline rise by 400 percent in the last decade and now helplessly looks to the future $2.00 per-gallon fuel. The facts speak for themselves. We cannot stop the rising cost of transportation; we must cope with the rising cost of transportation.
