Optical Estimation Of Auroral Ion Upflow: Theory, M. Zettergren, J. L. Semeter, P. L. Blelly, M. Diaz Dec 2007

Optical Estimation Of Auroral Ion Upflow: Theory, M. Zettergren, J. L. Semeter, P. L. Blelly, M. Diaz

Publications

This work presents a systematic analysis of optical emissions related to auroral ion upflow. Optical intensities and field‐aligned ion transport are computed for a set of monoenergetic incident electron beams using a combined fluid‐kinetic model. The kinetic portion models the energetic particle transport with a multiple stream approach and provides ionization, excitation, and heating rates to an eight‐moment fluid model of the ionosphere, which then calculates the resulting ion upflow. The analysis is used to develop a technique for estimating upward ion flux from photometric measurements at five discrete wavelengths: 427.8 nm, 557.7 nm, 630.0 nm, 732 nm, and 844.6 …

The General Relativistic Infinite Plane, Preston Jones, Gerardo Muñoz, Michael Ragsdale, Douglas Singleton Dec 2007

The General Relativistic Infinite Plane, Preston Jones, Gerardo Muñoz, Michael Ragsdale, Douglas Singleton

Publications

Uniform fields are one of the simplest and most pedagogically useful examples in introductory courses on electrostatics or Newtonian gravity. In general relativity there have been several proposals as to what constitutes a uniform field. In this article we examine two metrics that can be considered the general relativistic version of the infinite plane with finite mass per unit area. The first metric is the 4D version of the 5D “brane” world models which are the starting point for many current research papers. The second case is the cosmological domain wall metric. We examine to what extent these different metrics …

Exchange Bias In Bulk Mn Rich Ni–Mn–Sn Heusler Alloys, Mahmud Khan, Igor Dubenko, Shane Stadler, Naushad Ali Dec 2007

Exchange Bias In Bulk Mn Rich Ni–Mn–Sn Heusler Alloys, Mahmud Khan, Igor Dubenko, Shane Stadler, Naushad Ali

Publications

An experimental study on the exchange bias properties of bulk polycrystalline Ni50Mn50−xSnx Heusler alloys has been performed. Martensitic transformations have been observed in the alloys for some critical Sn concentrations. The alloys, while in their respective martensitic phases, are found to exhibit exchange bias effect. Shifts in hysteresis loops of up to 225 Oe were observed in the 50 kOe field cooled samples. The observed exchange bias behavior in Ni50Mn50−xSnx is attributed to the coexistence of antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic exchange interactions in the system.

Daily Mutual Fund Flows And Redemption Policies, Jason T. Greene, Charles W. Hodges, David A. Rakowski Dec 2007

Daily Mutual Fund Flows And Redemption Policies, Jason T. Greene, Charles W. Hodges, David A. Rakowski

Publications

We examine how redemption policies affect daily fund flows in open-end mutual funds. Since short-term trading of fund shares, as manifested in daily fund flows, can have an adverse impact on returns to the fund’s shareholders, mutual funds might find it desirable to discourage short-term trading through the use of redemption fees. However, if daily fund flows are due to fund shareholders’ legitimate liquidity demands, the redemption fee would have little effect on daily fund flows and possibly adversely affect fund shareholders by imposing a liquidity cost on them. We find that the likelihood of a fund charging a redemption …

A Hierarchical Model For Oxygen Dynamics In Streams, James E. Garvey, Matt R. Whiles, Dennis Streicher Dec 2007

A Hierarchical Model For Oxygen Dynamics In Streams, James E. Garvey, Matt R. Whiles, Dennis Streicher

Publications

Although oxygen frequently limits aquatic ecosystems, broad temporal-spatial oxygen dynamics in streams and consequences for aquatic life are poorly understood. In this perspective, we quantified dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations (mg·L–1) in six low-gradient streams in Illinois, USA, using semicontinuous data loggers at multiple sites during summer 2005 (a severe drought year) and summer 2006. We then interpreted these patterns in the context of known responses of stream organisms to DO. Daily median and minimum DO concentrations varied among sites, even within streams. Daily mean discharge (m3·s–1) explained as much as 63% of the variance in DO …

Publications

We report early follow-up observations of the error box of the short burst GRB 050813 using the telescopes at Calar Alto and Observatorio Sierra Nevada, followed by deep VLT FORS2 I-band observations obtained under very good seeing conditions 5.7 and 11.7 days after the event. Neither a fading afterglow nor a rising SN component was found, so the potential GRB host galaxy has not been identified based on a comparison of the two VLT images taken at different epochs. We discuss whether any of the galaxies present in the original 1000 XRTerror circle could be the host.In anycase, the optical …

Optimization Of Electrostatic Interactions In Protein-Protein Complexes, Kelly Brock, Kemper Talley, Kacey Coley, Petras Kundrotas, Emil Alexov

Publications

In this article, we present a statistical analysis of the electrostatic properties of 298 protein-protein complexes and 356 domain-domain structures extracted from the previously developed database of protein complexes (ProtCom, http://www.ces.clemson.edu/compbio/protcom). For each structure in the dataset we calculated the total electrostatic energy of the binding and its two components, Coulombic and reaction field energy. It was found that in a vast majority of the cases (>90%), the total electrostatic component of the binding energy was unfavorable. At the same time, the Coulombic component of the binding energy was found to favor the complex formation while …

1,3,7-Trideacetylkhivorin, Huaping Zhang, Don Vanderveer, Xi Wang, Feng Chen, Michael J. Wargovich

Publications

The title D-seco limonoid, named 1,3,7-trideacetylkhivorin (systematic name: 14,15:21,23-diepoxy-1,3,7-trihydroxy-4,4,8-trimethyl-D-homo-24-nor-17-oxochola-20,22-diene-16-one), C26H36O7, was isolated from the stem bark of African mahogany Khaya senegalensis (Meliaceae). The four fused six-membered rings adopt chair, chair, boat and half-chair conformations. The five-membered furan ring is disordered by a 180° rotation about the bond linking it to the pyran ring. The crystal structure is stabilized by strong classical O-HO hydrogen-bond interactions to form a network.

Polyphenolic Profile And Antioxidant Activities Of Oolong Tea Infusion Under Various Steeping Conditions, Xinguo Su, Jun Duan, Yueming Jiang, Xuewu Duan, Feng Chen Nov 2007

Polyphenolic Profile And Antioxidant Activities Of Oolong Tea Infusion Under Various Steeping Conditions, Xinguo Su, Jun Duan, Yueming Jiang, Xuewu Duan, Feng Chen

Publications

The phenolic profile and antioxidant activities of oolong tea extract were investigated after tea was steeped in 90 or 100 oC water for 3 or 10 min. The extraction yield increased with increasing temperature and extended steeping time. However, higher temperature and longer time (100 oC water for 10 min) led to loss of phenolics. The aqueous extract of oolong tea (AEOT) at 100 oC for 3 min exhibited the strongest antioxidant activity. The major polyphenolic components of the AEOT were identified as (-)-epigallocatechin (EGC), (-)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and (-)-epicatechin-3-gallate (ECG). The two major catechins (EGC and EGCG) in the …

On Enumeration Of Conjugacy Classes Of Coxeter Elements, Matthew Macauley, Henning S. Mortveit Nov 2007

On Enumeration Of Conjugacy Classes Of Coxeter Elements, Matthew Macauley, Henning S. Mortveit

Publications

In this paper we study the equivalence relation on the set of acyclic orientations of a graph Y that arises through source-to-sink conversions. This source-to-sink conversion encodes, e.g. conjugation of Coxeter elements of a Coxeter group. We give a direct proof of a recursion for the number of equivalence classes of this relation for an arbitrary graph Y using edge deletion and edge contraction of non-bridge edges. We conclude by showing how this result may also be obtained through an evaluation of the Tutte polynomial as T (Y, 1, 0), and we provide bijections to two other classes of acyclic …

Electromagnetic Radiation From Temporal Variations In Space-Time And Progenitors Of Gamma Ray Burst And Millisecond Pulsars, Preston Jones Nov 2007

Electromagnetic Radiation From Temporal Variations In Space-Time And Progenitors Of Gamma Ray Burst And Millisecond Pulsars, Preston Jones

Publications

A time varying space–time metric is shown to be a source of electromagnetic radiation even in the absence of charge sources. The post-Newtonian approximation is used as a realistic model of the connection between the space–time metric and a time-varying gravitational potential. Rapid temporal variations in the metric from the coalescence of relativistic stars are shown to be likely progenitors of gamma ray burst and millisecond pulsars.

The Economic Contribution Of Marine Science And Education Institutions In The Monterey Bay Crescent, Judith T. Kildow Dr, Nathaniel Miller

Publications

Ocean and coastal areas of the United States contribute significantly to our nation’s overall economy. The extent to which our economy benefits from the wide range of marine and coastal activities is not completely understood. The National Ocean Economics Program (NOEP) has attempted to track and value the ocean and coastal- related economic activities in the United States. To date six sectors are included in its information system (www.oceaneconomics.org). The economic contribution of marine research and education institutions is a sector of activity that lies outside of the normal federal government datasets, but one which seemed to have growing importance …

"Complete Liberty"? Gender, Sexuality, Race, And Social Change On The Lower Columbia River, 1805-1838, Gray H. Whaley Oct 2007

"Complete Liberty"? Gender, Sexuality, Race, And Social Change On The Lower Columbia River, 1805-1838, Gray H. Whaley

Publications

This article analyzes social change in the emerging colonial world of the lower Columbia River from 1805 to 1838, particularly regarding gender and sexuality. It teases out distinctions among formal marriages, informal “custom of the country” arrangements, the exercise of sexual “liberties” by young Chinookan women, and prostitution, revealing much of the complex sexual interactions between natives and newcomers. Such a focus illuminates critical, interpersonal aspects of fur trade society in this region as it developed into a complex colonial milieu, reflecting both indigenous and Western interests. Lower Chinookans adapted slavery and trade practices to accommodate the demands of their …

Influence Of Stress And Dietary Natural-Source Vitamin E On Nonspecific Immunocompetence, Tissue Tocopherol Composition, And Postslaughter Fillet Oxidative Stability In Sunshine Bass, Jesse Trushenski, Christopher Kohler

Publications

We evaluated the effects of stressor exposure and super-requirement levels of RRR-atocopheryl acetate (natural-source vitamin E [NSVE]) on production performance and nonspecific immunocompetency of juvenile sunshine bass (female white bass Morone chrysops X male striped bass M. saxatilis). Stressor exposure elicited physiological changes consistent with the generalized stress response, and the magnitude of responses generally mirrored stressor severity. Stressor exposure resulted in lower fillet peroxides and greater aldehydes after short-term frozen storage, whereas increasing dietary NSVE was associated with a nonsignificant reduction in aldehydes after long-term storage. Fillet a-tocopherol content increased linearly with dietary NSVE, exceeding reported tissue levels …
