Governors State University professor Dr. Jon Carlson recently returned from India and a meeting with His Holiness the Dalai Lama with some very special gifts. He presented Khatas to GSU President Elaine P. Maimon, Provost Terry Allison, and Dean of the College of Education Deborah Bordelon.

Khatas are Tibetan scarves that have been blessed by the Dalai Lama. They symbolize purity, goodwill, auspiciousness, and compassion. Once blessed by the Dalai Lama, they become cherished talismans.

Governors State University President Elaine P. Maimon last week received a strong vote of confidence from the university’s Board of Trustees.

At their regular meeting, Trustees unanimously approved a resolution expressing “continuing support and sincere appreciation and gratitude” for Dr. Maimon’s leadership. The vote followed a comprehensive assessment of the president’s performance by the Board of Trustees.

Governors State University Begins Infant And Toddler Childcare, Office Of Public Affairs

Beginning on December 17, Governors State University’s Family Development Center (FDC) opened an Illinois State licensed childcare facility for infants, toddlers, and two year olds. The little ones are cared for in specially equipped classrooms of eight children, each staffed with two teachers. The infant and toddler childcare center is open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Governors State University graduate and undergraduate students had the opportunity to teach educators recently when they presented at the 61st Annual Meeting of the Illinois Council of Teacher of Mathematics in Springfield, Illinois.

The students, all studying to be math teachers, presented math activities they designed based on the massive sculptures in the Nathan Manilow Sculpture Park. The students found that the 26 sculptures, which are located on the grounds of the university, can be used to illustrate various mathematical formulas and principles.

Dr. Rosemary Johnsen, Assistant Professor of English at Governors State University, will deliver a lecture sponsored by the Raven Foundation exploring the themes of the Lookingglass Theatre’s original adaptation of “Peter Pan (A Play).”

The lecture will take place on December 4, at 12:30 p.m., at Loyola University Museum of Art and serves as a pre-show introduction to the 2:00 matinee performance of the play.

In addition to her lecture, the Raven Foundation of Glenview, Illinois, asked Johnsen to contribute an essay, “The Persistence of Peter Pan” for the Lookingglass Theatre’s “Peter Pan” study guide.

After playing to acclaim at festivals around the world, “Chicago Heights,” an independent feature film, produced with only a $1,000 budget and a volunteer cast and crew, will screen at the Gene Siskel Film Center in Chicago from December 10 to 16.

Governors State University associate professor Daniel Nearing and assistant professor Sanghoon Lee adapted “Winesburg, Ohio” by Sherwood Anderson, shifting the story from rural Ohio to suburban Chicago Heights. They produced “Chicago Heights” using students and resources from the new Master in Fine Arts in Independent Film and Digital Imaging program at GSU.

The Departments of Physical Therapy,Communication Disorders, Addiction Studies, and Health Administration in the College of Health and Human Services (CHHS) at Governors State University (GSU) recently hosted their second annual induction ceremony for the local chapter of the Alpha Eta Society – the National Scholastic Honor Society for allied health students at GSU. The GSU chapter of Alpha Eta is known as Gamma Psi Upsilon. A total of 71 alumni, graduate, and undergraduate students were inducted.

Five master storytellers will delight and captivate the audience at “Tellebration!,” a free, international event hosted by Governors State University on Saturday, November 20, at 7 p.m., in Sherman Recital Hall on GSU’s main campus in University Park.

“Tellebration!” storytelling presentations will take place simultaneously across the United States and in a number of foreign countries, said Lynne Clayton, producer of the GSU event. GSU is one of 400 official sites around the world that will be hosting storytelling events on the same day.

Governors State University last week received the 2010 Governor’s Sustainability Award for significant achievements in protecting the environment, helping sustain the future, and improving the economy.

GSU was one of 27 Illinois companies and organizations that received the award, but was the only university recognized for its sustainability efforts. The awards were presented by the Illinois Sustainable Technology Center (ISTC) during a luncheon in Champaign. The ISTC is a unit of the Institute of Natural Resource Sustainability at the University of Illinois.
