Putin And Trilateral Economic Cooperation Between Moscow, Seoul, And Pyongyang: Motivation, Feasibility, And Korean Peace Process, Seung-Ho Joo, Yune Lee

Political Science Publications

Since 2000, President Vladimir Putin of Russia has persistently pushed for trilateral economic projects involving Moscow, Seoul, and Pyongyang, especially in the fields of energy (oil, gas, and electricity) and transportation (railroad). The Kremlin has long maintained that its proposed trilateral projects would not only be economically beneficial to all but also pave the road to inter-Korean reconciliation and peaceful unification. This article addresses three questions regarding Putin’s trilateral economic projects. What motivates Russia to push for the projects? Would they bring benefits to the three countries? Would they facilitate Korean peace process? The authors argue that Putin’s trilateral economic …

Physiological Arousal And Self-Reported Valence For Erotica Images Correlate With Sexual Policy Preferences, Amanda Friesen, Kevin B. Smith, John R. Hibbing Oct 2017

Physiological Arousal And Self-Reported Valence For Erotica Images Correlate With Sexual Policy Preferences, Amanda Friesen, Kevin B. Smith, John R. Hibbing

Political Science Publications

Individuals do not always accurately report the forces driving their policy preferences. Such inaccuracy may result from the fact that true justifications are socially undesirable or less persuasive than competing justifications or are unavailable in conscious awareness. Because of the delicate nature of these issues, people may be particularly likely to misstate the reasons for preferences on gay marriage, abortion, abstinence-only education, and premarital sex. Advocates on both sides typically justify their preferences in terms of preserving social order, maintaining moral values, or protecting civil liberties, not in terms of their own sexual preferences. Though these are the stated reasons, …

Moralizing To The Choir: The Moral Foundations Of American Clergy, Amanda Friesen, Paul A. Djupe

Political Science Publications

Objective

In order to understand the role of clergy in shaping Americans’ moral worldviews, we examine whether the structure of clergy values varies in systematic ways according to contextual factors, such as disagreement in the congregation.

Method

In early 2014 (February), clergy from a variety of Protestant denominations were contacted by email and invited to complete a survey online, which included a 20-item moral foundations (MFs) battery as well as a variety of attitudinal, behavioral, and relational measures.

Results

Clergy MFs resemble average citizens’, they look to preserve their autonomy by emphasizing individualizing foundations when they are in disagreement with …

Conscientious Women: The Dispositional Conditions Of Institutional Treatment On Civic Involvement, Amanda Friesen, Paul A. Djupe Mar 2017

Conscientious Women: The Dispositional Conditions Of Institutional Treatment On Civic Involvement, Amanda Friesen, Paul A. Djupe

Political Science Publications

Current thinking about the effect of religion on civic engagement centers on “institutional treatment”—the development of resources, social pathways to recruitment, and motivation that occurs in small groups and activities of congregations. None of this work has yet incorporated the personality traits that may shape the uptake of institutional treatment. Following a growing line of research articulating how individual predispositions condition political involvement, we argue that gendered personality differences may moderate civic skill development. With new data, we find that women do not develop skills from religious involvement at the same rate as men and that this pattern is largely …

How American Women And Men Read The Bible, Amanda Friesen Mar 2017

How American Women And Men Read The Bible, Amanda Friesen

Political Science Publications

Gender differences in religious belief and behavior are evident throughout the American Christian landscape. Though many scholars have compared women and men on numerous religious measures, very little research exists on the exploration of Bible reading—one of the most common forms of religious personal devotionalism and practice. Using the Bible in American Life module of the General Social Survey, I test a series of hypotheses to gain a better understanding of whether and how men and women read the Bible differently, which may contribute to the many gender differences in religiosity that may have consequences outside church walls. Women were …

Political Science Publications

Th is article provides a comparative analysis of citizen participatory mechanisms at the regional and local levels. Th e article analyzes these mechanisms’ overall representativeness of the general population, their operation and contribution to ‘policy learning’, and their impact on subsequent transit policies. …

Trajectories Of Large-Scale Land Acquisition Dynamics In Angola: Diversity, Histories, And Implications For The Political Economy Of Development In Africa, Aharon De Grassi, Jesse Salah Ovadia Jan 2017

Trajectories Of Large-Scale Land Acquisition Dynamics In Angola: Diversity, Histories, And Implications For The Political Economy Of Development In Africa, Aharon De Grassi, Jesse Salah Ovadia

Political Science Publications

Numerous large scale land acquisitions have occurred in Angola since partial political and economic liberalization in the late 1980s and early 1990s, and further increased after 2002 and the end of armed conflict. They have occurred in conjunction with the emergence of a range of large state-coordinated agricultural projects, often by foreign contractors, for domestic food, and involving plans for backwards and forwards linkages to agro-processing and manufacturing initiatives. Altogether such land allocations and projects involve several billion dollars and several million hectares. These activities appear to often also involve high-level officials and/or wealthy Angolans and are often interpreted as …

State-Led Industrial Development, Structural Transformation And Elite-Led Plunder: Angola (2002–2013) As A Developmental State, Jesse Salah Ovadia Jan 2017

State-Led Industrial Development, Structural Transformation And Elite-Led Plunder: Angola (2002–2013) As A Developmental State, Jesse Salah Ovadia

Political Science Publications

From 2002-2013, Angola engaged in large-scale state-led reconstruction and development alongside an elite-led appropriation and seizure of national assets. Until the oil price shock, Angola had been succeeding in promoting rapid economic growth and possibly even significant social development alongside a massive grab of wealth and power by local elites. Today, though an economic crisis has taken hold, frequent predictions of the country’s immanent collapse have yet to be fulfilled. This paper reviews the state’s development planning and expenditure with a focus on public investment and industrial development to determine to what extent Angola during this period might have been …
