The purpose of this study was to measure the factors that influence children’s moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) during school curriculum time, recess time, and outside school time in a rural area. During the Fall and Winter of 2016, 34 boys and 55 girls aged 8–14 years from rural communities in rural Northwestern Ontario participated in the Spatial Temporal Environment and Activity Monitoring project. The children’s MVPA was measured using an accelerometer, and child-level demographic, behavioral, and environmental data were gathered from surveys, passively logging global positioning units, and municipal datasets. Data on daily temperature and precipitation were gathered from the …

Background: To better characterize short-term and long-term outcomes in children with pancreatic tumors treated with pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD). Methods: Patients 21 years of age or younger who underwent PD at Pediatric Surgical Oncology Collaborative (PSORC) hospitals between 1990 and 2017 were identified. Demographic, clinical information, and outcomes (operative complications, long-term pancreatic function, recurrence, and survival) were collected. Results: Sixty-five patients from 18 institutions with a median age of 13 years (4 months-22 years) and a median (IQR) follow-up of 2.8 (4.3) years were analyzed. Solid pseudopapillary tumor of the pancreas (SPN) was the most common histology. Postoperative complications included pancreatic leak …

Social Assistance And Trajectories Of Child Mental Health Problems In Canada: Evidence From The National Longitudinal Survey Of Children And Youth, Jinette Comeau, Laura Duncan, Katholiki Georgiades, Li Wang, Michael H. Boyle Aug 2020

Social Assistance And Trajectories Of Child Mental Health Problems In Canada: Evidence From The National Longitudinal Survey Of Children And Youth, Jinette Comeau, Laura Duncan, Katholiki Georgiades, Li Wang, Michael H. Boyle

Objectives: To examine the link between stability and change in social assistance (SA) use and children’s mental health trajectories to better understand whether social policies targeted at low-income families might be an effective population-based mechanism for preventing mental health problems among children at risk. Methods: The National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth (N = 8981) is used to classify children into 5 categories based on their family’s pattern of SA use from age 4–5 to 10–11: always or never on SA, a single transition on or off SA, or fluctuations on and off SA. Latent growth modelling is used …

Background: Sarcopenia, the unintentional loss of skeletal muscle mass, is associated with poor outcomes in adult patient populations. In adults, sarcopenia is often ascertained by cross-sectional imaging of the psoas muscle area (PMA). Although children with chronic medical illnesses may be at increased risk for muscle loss because of nutritional deficiencies, physical deconditioning, endocrine anomalies, and systemic inflammation, consistent quantitative definitions for sarcopenia in children are lacking. We aimed to generate paediatric reference values for PMA at two intervertebral lumbar levels, L3–4 and L4–5. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we analysed abdominal computed tomography scans of consecutive children presenting to …

Fatigue In Young People With Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, Basmah El-Aloul, Kathy N Speechley, Yi Wei, Piotr Wilk, Craig Campbell Jan 2020

Fatigue In Young People With Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, Basmah El-Aloul, Kathy N Speechley, Yi Wei, Piotr Wilk, Craig Campbell

Paediatrics Publications

AIM: To describe fatigue in Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) from patients' and parents' perspectives and to explore risk factors for fatigue in children and adolescents with DMD.

METHOD: A multicentre, cross-sectional study design was used. Seventy-one patients (all males; median age 12y, age range 5-17y) identified via the Canadian Neuromuscular Disease Registry, and their parents completed questionnaires. Subjective fatigue was assessed using the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory Multidimensional Fatigue Scale by child self-report and parent proxy-report.

RESULTS: Patients with DMD across ages and disease stages experienced greater fatigue compared to typically developing controls from published data. Sleep disturbance symptoms …

Facilitating Respite, Communication, And Care For Children With Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities: Preliminary Evaluation Of The Caregiver Pain Information Guide., Lara M. Genik, Geneva E. Millett, C. Meghan Mcmurtry Jan 2020

Facilitating Respite, Communication, And Care For Children With Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities: Preliminary Evaluation Of The Caregiver Pain Information Guide., Lara M. Genik, Geneva E. Millett, C. Meghan Mcmurtry

Paediatrics Publications

Background: Pain is common in children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) and yet is an understudied issue. Respite workers commonly care for children with I/DD but are lacking in resources to assist in pain assessment and management for this population. Without adequate knowledge in this domain, children with I/DD are at risk of their pain being underrecognized and undermanaged. A resource for caregivers was developed to address this issue, facilitating communication between parents and respite workers and better addressing the complex pain-related needs of children with I/DD. The objective of this study was to solicit initial feedback on the …

Exploring Children's Perceptions Of Barriers And Facilitators To Physical Activity In Rural Northwestern Ontario, Canada, Brenton L.G. Button, Suzanne Tillmann, Jason Gilliland Jan 2020

Exploring Children's Perceptions Of Barriers And Facilitators To Physical Activity In Rural Northwestern Ontario, Canada, Brenton L.G. Button, Suzanne Tillmann, Jason Gilliland

Introduction: Low levels of physical activity among children are a significant public health concern in several industrialized nations. The current research body has failed to gather adequate information on various geographic regions. Understanding barriers and facilitators in different rural regions is imperative for creating successful physical activity interventions for children in rural areas. The purpose of this study is to explore rural children's perspectives on physical activity and to discuss barriers or facilitators to physical activity participation in rural Northwestern Ontario, Canada. Methods: Children (n=84) in Grades 4-8 (ages 8-14 years) in rural Northwestern Ontario participated in focus groups to …
