Synthesis And Characterization Of Acetylenic Derivatives Of The Actinide Extractant (Aryl) N,N Di (Alkyl)Carbamoylmethylphosphine Oxide (Cmpo), Mario Ivan Baeza

We have used the reaction between the sodium salt of (diaryl)-N,N-di-(isobutyl)carbamoylmethylphosphine oxides {[Aryl)2P=O][iBu2NC=O]CH}-Na+ and chloromethylacetylenes to produce the first acetylenic derivatives of the carbamoylmethylphosphine oxide (CMPO) actinide extractants. The new compounds - CMPO-CH2C2H (1) {aryl = phenyl}, (2) {aryl = tBu-phenyl}; CMPO-CH2C2Me (3) {aryl = phenyl}; and CMPO-CH2C2CH2Cl (4) {aryl = phenyl}, (5) {aryl = tBu-phenyl} - have been characterized by spectroscopy (1H, 13C, 32P NMR) and also by single crystal X-ray diffraction. These new extractants lead the way to new derivatives aimed at using the materials as both optical and electrochemical actinide and other metal sensors.

Colleges and universities continue to be held to accountability measures typically related to student graduation rates. Intercollegiate athletic programs are not immune to such accountability measures. For instance, in recent years the National Collegiate Athletic Association adopted the Academic Progress Rate, which holds institutions accountable for the graduation, retention, and eligibility status of its student-athletes. It is the moral obligation of intercollegiate administrators to ensure student-athletes are receiving a quality education culminating in graduation. In this study correlation of Miocene volcanic and sedimentary rocks in southern Death Valley is used to constrain the total amount of slip on the southern Death Valley fault. The tertiary volcanic section near Ibex Pass is correlated to rocks ~35 km to the northwest, in the Wingate Wash region (Luckow et al., 2005). Geochronology by Luckow et al. (2005) in Wingate Wash and the Owlshead Mountains has the region divided into two basic periods: an early interval (~14-13.4Ma), and a later phase (~13-12.5Ma). The effect of stimulus type on task-irrelevant evaluative categorization was examined in two separate studies by using the P3 component from event-related brain potentials. The first study presented idiosyncratic stimuli consisting of individuals that were rated by participants as either positive or negative within sequences of pictorial and verbal stimuli. The second study presented sequences of novel and familiar stimuli consisting of previously normed unattractive and neutral individuals. It was hypothesized that pictures would elicit task-irrelevant evaluative categorization processes and so would novel stimuli (relative to words and familiar stimuli, respectively). Do the number of members, the level of democracy, and the level of institutionalization contribute to the creation and use of a juridical organ in IGOs? This study utilizes 495 IGOs in order to answer this question and examine which of these three elements, or all of them, are relevant to the creation and use of any type of juridical mechanism in an IGO. For each of these characteristics five dependent variables were tested. This study empirically examines the relationship between top management team (TMT) heterogeneity and firm performance for a sample of multinational enterprises (MNEs) headquartered in 31 countries from across the globe. Utilizing the theoretical perspectives of upper echelons (Hambrick & Mason, 1984) and information processing (Daft, Bettenhausen, & Tyler, 1993; Galbraith, 1973), I hypothesize that global strategic posture, a measure of the intensity of a firm's involvement in the multinational business environment, moderates the relationships between TMT heterogeneity and firm performance. The growing awareness of the problem of false confessions has lead social science researchers to investigate the factors that influence true vs. false confessions. Previous research suggested that minimization and maximization techniques may be interpreted by a suspect as the equivalent of an offer of leniency and a threat of harsher punishment, respectively. The current studies seek to further this literature by distinguishing between minimization and maximization techniques that may or may not influence a suspect's perceptions of the consequences associated with confessing. The purpose of this research was to examine leadership capacity perceptions in high schools and their relationship to student achievement. The study explored perceptions of leadership capacity of principals, assistant principals and teachers on high school campuses in a border county. Correlation statistics were employed to investigate the existence of relational patterns between Lambert's (2003) Leadership Capacity Survey and student academic achievement. Results from the math, English-language arts and "all tests taken" portions of the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) tests were analyzed and compared with survey results using Pearson r correlations.

Cervical cancer affects Hispanic women disproportionately in comparison to their non-Hispanic white counterparts. In 2004, the incidence rate was 12.2 per 100,000 persons among Hispanic women compared to 7.5 per 100,000 among non-Hispanic white women (U.S. Cancer Statistics Working Group, 2007). Although this form of cancer is easily diagnosed through recommended screening tests, Hispanic women are often less likely to get screened (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2000). Recent studies have shown that the proton conductivity of MH2PO4 (M=Cs, Rb) solid-acids exhibits a sharp, several-order-of-magnitude increase upon heating above a certain temperature threshold [Boysen et al., Chem. Mater. 15, 727(2003), Boysen et al., Chem. Mater. 16, 693(2004)]. This so-called superprotonic behavior allows the above-mentioned compounds to function as fuel-cell electrolytes at intermediate temperatures [Boysen et al., Science 303, 68(2004)], a remarkable application that has attracted much interest. Yet, the crystal structures and microscopic mechanisms responsible for this heating-induced proton conductivity enhancement are not fully understood.

Previous studies have demonstrated that the behavioral effects of nicotine withdrawal are lower in adolescent versus adult rats. However, the neurochemical mechanisms that mediate these developmental differences are presently unclear. Much work has shown that nicotine reward is mediated via enhanced dopamine neurotransmission in the mesolimbic pathway which originates in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) and terminates in several forebrain structures including the nucleus accumbens (NAcc). More recently, studies have shown that nicotine withdrawal produces a decrease in NAcc dopamine transmission, an effect that is believed to serve as a neurochemical marker of withdrawal in adult rodents. In this paper, the idea that Shakespeare's Caesar is just as Shavian as Shaw's representation of Julius Caesar is explored. In addition, an examination of the characteristics of the Life Force that prevail in Caesar and Cleopatra is presented. The objective of this thesis was to assess the repeatability of four-point bending method for estimating fatigue cracking of hot mix asphalt. This experimental research examined the influence of mix proportions, specifically asphalt and air void contents, on fatigue behavior of asphalt beam specimens in the laboratory tested with four-point bending method of loading. Following the relevant specifications, the strain-controlled mode of loading was selected. Fatigue failure is expected to occur at the cycle which the flexural stiffness of asphalt specimen reduced to 50% of initial amount. Up to a 1,000,000 cycles of loading were applied to each specimen.
