In recent years the designs of High Performance Computing (HPC) clusters have become more complex. This is due to the emergence of new processing elements, in particular Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) and other many-core processors that can be combined with multi-core processors to enhance application performance. The design of a cluster includes processing elements that meet the needs of the applications that will run on the system. Unfortunately, it has become increasingly difficult to compare the performance of novel many-core processing elements due to the differences in their architectures. This work describes an attempt to develop a methodology for comparing …

Predicting Recessions Using The Yield Spread: The Mexican Northern Border Case, Laura Mariel Saenz Jan 2015

Predicting Recessions Using The Yield Spread: The Mexican Northern Border Case, Laura Mariel Saenz

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Business cycle analysis is a difficult endeavor. Policymakers are justifiably concerned over recessionary prospects for their respective economies. Being able to predict an incoming recession allows implementing measures to ameliorate the effects of downturns. The yield spread has been extensively used to analyze business cycles in high income economies. The probit model, the most widely utilized model for this type of analysis, enables estimation of the probability (between 0 and 1) that a recession will occur. This study evaluates the predictive power of the Mexico yield spread, the United States yield spread and the real exchange index to anticipate the …

The Effects Of Stock Distributions On Returns, Volatility, And Price, Jason Heavilin

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

This Dissertation investigates three issues regarding the effects of stock distributions on returns, volatility, and prices in an attempt to answer the questions why firms execute stock distributions and why the market appears to favor them. These questions have occupied academicians for at least 40 years (i.e., Fama et al (1969), Ohlson and Penman (1985), Rankine and Stice (1997), Angel (1997), and Crawford et al (2005) among many others).

Chapter 1 studies the notion that the stock market reacts more positive to stock dividends than to stock splits (Rankine and Stice, 1997). However, I find that the stock market does …

The Role Of P62/Imp2 In Breast Cancer Progression, Yang Li Jan 2015

The Role Of P62/Imp2 In Breast Cancer Progression, Yang Li

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Breast cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in women. In most patients with breast cancer, it is not the primary tumor that leads to death, but rather metastatic tumors. Once breast cancer spreads to other organs in the body, the disease becomes almost incurable. It is estimated that about 20% to 50% of patients diagnosed with primary breast cancer will develop metastatic disease. Considering this, it is important to understand the molecular and cellular mechanisms behind metastatic breast cancer and to identify new proteins that regulate the metastatic process. These proteins may be used as targets …

The Window To The Bilingual Mind: Eye Movements Reveal Psycholinguistic Grain Unit Sizes Of Bilingual Spoken Word Recognition, Yu-Cheng Lin

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Although there are common phonological units across different languages, previous studies have shown that individual differences of language proficiency affect sound unit preferences in monolingual and bilingual speakers. The cross-language lexical activation of phonological representations in bilingual minds can provide a great opportunity for testing hypotheses about how this key factor modulates the cross-linguistic phonological transfer across languages. In this study, I used the eye-tracking technique and quantitative methods (i.e., growth curve analysis and multilevel regression) to examine how individual differences in language proficiency affect cross-language phonological unit size transfer in Chinese-English bilinguals. Participants heard a spoken word and were …

The purpose of this work is to develop a synchronization scheme for bistatic radar that uses a 3-D chaotic system to generate and process wideband AM and FM signals, which allows for the extraction of high range-resolution information from targets. For AM bistatic radar, the setup includes a drive oscillator at the transmitter and a response oscillator at the receiver. The challenge is synchronizing the response oscillator to the drive oscillator with a scaled version of the transmitted signal sr(t, x) = αs t(t, x), where x is a chaotic state variable and α is a scaling factor. Here, α …

Rare Pride Campaigns: Evaluating Participatory Communication In Conservation Efforts Throughout Indonesia, Lauren Elizabeth Perez Jan 2015

Rare Pride Campaigns: Evaluating Participatory Communication In Conservation Efforts Throughout Indonesia, Lauren Elizabeth Perez

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Communication scholars who study international development and social change have found that if facilitators of social change hope to find positive, lasting solutions to complex social and environmental issues, they must incorporate more participatory approaches. However, even the practitioners with the most noble intentions oftentimes fall short of facilitating truly participatory practices because their strategies are the product of linear processes for evaluating the change context. In this study, I apply Lennie and Tacchi's (2014) approach to evaluating communication for development in a case study of Pride Campaigns implemented by managers throughout Indonesia who partnered with the conservation non-governmental organization …

A Stochastic Approach For Pavement Condition Projections And Budget Needs For The Mtc Pavement Management System, Rafael Arturo Ramirez Flores

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Pavement management decision-making is the most important task for officials in transportation agencies, who develop maintenance and rehabilitation programs. Information about historical pavement network performance is needed for decision-making; pavement management systems (PMS) provide means to organize road network data to improve the pavement network condition. PMS have prediction performance models to forecast the future condition of the pavement networks with information required for decision-making; these models can be deterministic or probabilistic. Pavement performance deterministic models are commonly used in PMS, but they do not consider the uncertainty in forecasting pavement performance. Pavement performance depends on many random factors like …

A Tectonic Analysis On The Central Region Of The Himalaya Collision Zone Using Double Difference Tomography, Chanel Perez

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The Himalaya mountain range remains the only place on Earth undergoing continuous effects from the continental-continental collision between India and Asia. Because of this, the Himalayas have been subjected to extensive deformation and transpression, and contain five major shear zones. Extensive seismic analysis of the region, however, is lacking due to sparse seismograph coverage and complexity of the crustal structure. I examined seismic event data from two temporary seismic networks deployed in the central Himalaya, the HIMNT deployment from 2001-2003, and the Bhutan deployment from 2002-2003. Using this data I develop a 3-D earth model for the region using double-difference …

Because participants were instructed to maintain a mental and verbal count of the target stimuli, a …

Neighbor Discovery In Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Esau Enrique Ruiz-Gaistardo Jan 2015

Neighbor Discovery In Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Esau Enrique Ruiz-Gaistardo

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Neighbor Discovery (ND) is the process that initializes a reliable communication between one-hop neighbors in mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs). This process consists of scheduled exchanges of control messages, called â??Hello Messagesâ?? (HMs) between one-hop neighbors. HMs build bidirectional links that are used to announce the topology information. Each node uses ND and the topology information to populate its routing tables and to communicate with every other node in the network. In MANETs, ND process is a permanent process to discover one-hop neighbors. It is based on two parameters: 1) ND message interval (the period of time in between sending …
