African American Women's Experiences Of Race-Based Traumatic Stress, Amina Y. Simmons Aug 2019

African American Women's Experiences Of Race-Based Traumatic Stress, Amina Y. Simmons

Open Access Dissertations

Assessments of racism are linked to increased risk of anxiety (Soto, Dawson- Andoh, & BeLue, 2011), depression (Lee & Turney, 2012), and increased symptoms of PTSD (Polanco-Roman, Danies, & Anglin, 2016), leading scholars to infer racism may be a type of traumatic stress (Carter, 2007; Helms, Nicolas, & Green, 2010). African American men and women report similar frequency and levels of racism-related stress (Jackson, Shestov, & Saadatmand, 2017; Kwate & Goodman, 2015) however, the impacts appear significant for Black women (Chyu and Upchurch, 2011; Jackson, Shestov, & Saadatmand, 2017). This exploratory study sought greater understanding of Black women’s experiences with …

Impacts Of Demographics, Symptom Presentation, And Clinical Factors On Tf-Cbt Service Utilization, Lucia M. Walsh Aug 2019

Impacts Of Demographics, Symptom Presentation, And Clinical Factors On Tf-Cbt Service Utilization, Lucia M. Walsh

Open Access Dissertations

Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) is a common trauma, but up to half of youth who demonstrate associated symptoms do not obtain treatment in a timely manner. Demographic variables have been examined to better understand service utilization patterns in CSA youth, but more complex factors (e.g., symptom profiles) remain relatively ignored. This study sought to understand the relationship between symptoms, commonly examined demographics, and service utilization in a large sample of CSA youth. Youth were ethnically and linguistically diverse, predominantly low-income, and referred for evaluation and treatment at a Child Advocacy Center. Latent profile analysis was used to create profiles of …

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Trauma, And Stress: A Network Approach, Julia Yang Carbonella Aug 2018

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Trauma, And Stress: A Network Approach, Julia Yang Carbonella

Open Access Dissertations

Experience of traumatic life events (TLEs) has consistently been identified as a risk factor that can trigger and exacerbate obsessive compulsive symptoms (OCS). At the clinical level of severity, OCD and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are also highly comorbid at rates greater than in the general population. However, much remains unclear about the differential interrelations between symptoms of OCD and PTSD, as well as the influence of a traumatic history on the connectedness of hallmark features of OCD. The overarching study applied network analysis – a recently developed tool that can help shed light on symptom structure and relations – …

Giving Voice To Underserved Foreign-Born Latino Youth: Trauma, Stress, And Health In The Primary Care Setting, Ashley Nicole Marchante-Hoffman Jun 2018

Giving Voice To Underserved Foreign-Born Latino Youth: Trauma, Stress, And Health In The Primary Care Setting, Ashley Nicole Marchante-Hoffman

Open Access Dissertations

Exposure to potentially traumatic events (PTEs) is common in the United States and may be more frequent among foreign-born Latino youth. Research has shown that PTEs negatively affect mental health outcomes, such as depression and anxiety. However, less is known about physical health outcomes during childhood and adolescence. Furthermore, foreign-born Latino youth, who are often a high-risk group, have been largely neglected in the trauma literature. Thus, the purpose of this study was to: (1) examine rates of pre-, during, and post-migration PTEs in foreign-born Latino youth and (2) assess the relationship between PTEs and markers of physical health problems …

Posttraumatic Growth Among Latina Victims Of Interpersonal Violence In Psychological Treatment, Amelia Swanson Jul 2015

Posttraumatic Growth Among Latina Victims Of Interpersonal Violence In Psychological Treatment, Amelia Swanson

Open Access Dissertations

Posttraumatic growth (PTG) is an area of research that describes the positive psychological changes that often occur after a traumatic event (Tedeschi & Calhoun, 2004). To date, PTG has been documented in many countries for individuals that have experienced a range of traumatic experiences (Tedeschi & Calhoun, 2004; Weiss & Berger, 2010a). However, there is no research on PTG changes as a result of participation in psychological treatment with Latinas in the US. This study used data obtained at a local community mental health clinic to assess PTG levels before and after a trauma treatment among 77 Latinas victims of …

Violence And History In South Asian Partition Literature, Devi Prasad Sharma Gautam Jul 2014

Violence And History In South Asian Partition Literature, Devi Prasad Sharma Gautam

Open Access Dissertations

In this dissertation I examine literary texts of Saadat Hasan Manto, Khushwant Singh, Chaman Nahal, Bhisham Sahni, Bapsi Sidhwa, and Amitav Ghosh in order to explore the historical sense of South Asian Partition writing that exhibits less and less the pain of diaspora, and opens up more and more to a cosmopolitan mode of living. I argue that in a first phase of response to Partition, writers concentrated on the depiction of overwhelming violence; in the next phase, they gave space to reconstruction as well as loss; and in the third phase, represented here by Ghosh, they have concentrated on …

Brief Psychological Intervention For Acute Posttraumatic Stress: Individual And Trauma Factors Affecting Recovery In Low-Ses Minorities., Lindsay M. Bira Jul 2014

Brief Psychological Intervention For Acute Posttraumatic Stress: Individual And Trauma Factors Affecting Recovery In Low-Ses Minorities., Lindsay M. Bira

Open Access Dissertations

Low-SES minorities in urban areas experience higher rates of trauma and greater need for treatment than the general population. Individual and trauma factors may determine who benefits most from treatment. Brief intervention and group format may be particularly helpful to fully utilize minimal resources and maximize treatment gain. This study is part of a larger NIH-funded study. We worked in an underserved area with recently traumatized individuals to compare Psychological First Aid (PFA: group format, control), Stress Management Therapy (SMT: group format, trauma-writing component)and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR: individual format) to determine the impact of the interventions and …

Love In A Time Of Trauma: Imagining Queer Female Sexualities In Post-Apartheid South Africa, Stephanie M. Selvick Jun 2013

Love In A Time Of Trauma: Imagining Queer Female Sexualities In Post-Apartheid South Africa, Stephanie M. Selvick

Open Access Dissertations

My dissertation analyzes competing discourses of sexuality in contemporary South Africa, and contributes to a much-needed nascent critical conversation engaging postcolonial studies, African studies, and sexuality studies. South Africa’s 1996 constitution is celebrated as the most progressive in the world in terms of gender and sexuality, but this legal achievement is belied by the on-going, much-publicized rape crisis -- including the “corrective” rape of lesbians. This crisis has occurred in the context of an AIDS epidemic and government denial of the increase of both rape and AIDS. I argue that authors and artists respond to this crisis by representing stigmatized …

Emotional Expression And Depth Processing In Trauma Writing: Impact On Hiv/Aids-Targeted Quality Of Life, Rachel A. Ruffin Jul 2011

Emotional Expression And Depth Processing In Trauma Writing: Impact On Hiv/Aids-Targeted Quality Of Life, Rachel A. Ruffin

Open Access Dissertations

Expressive writing has been linked to positive psychological and health outcomes in general and medical populations, but research examining this intervention in HIV is limited. Higher levels of emotional expression (EE) and depth processing (DP) during writing have been linked to better health status in HIV. Expressive writing has been shown to improve health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in other populations, but has not been examined in HIV. HRQoL is often compromised in HIV+ individuals and therefore improvements in this area are an appropriate goal of psychosocial interventions. This longitudinal study used HLM analyses to examine the relationship between levels …

An Examination Of Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal Axis Reactivity As A Partial Mediator Of The Relation Between Trauma And Self-Injurious Behavior, Eileen Katherine Bent Sep 2010

An Examination Of Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal Axis Reactivity As A Partial Mediator Of The Relation Between Trauma And Self-Injurious Behavior, Eileen Katherine Bent

Open Access Dissertations

Past work has linked self-injurious behavior (SIB) to a history of traumatic experiences and to problems regulating affect. While this affect dysregulation is conceptualized as occurring at a biological (as well as a behavioral) level, relatively little is known about the biological mechanisms involved. The current study explored whether reactivity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis to an interpersonal stressor mediated the relation between trauma and SIB in a sample of 178 18-21 year-old heterosexual dating couples. As predicted, both trauma experience and symptoms positively predicted SIB. While the mediating model was not supported, SIB was associated with an HPA axis …
