The Fake News Phenomenon: Impact Of Heuristic Cues On Perceived Credibility And Sharing On Social Media, Khudejah Iqbal Ali

Open Access Dissertations

The growing global health threat of vaccine hesitancy is believed to be fueled by anti-vaccine movements around the world. Overall, the strong presence of anti-vaccination groups on the Internet, particularly social media, are important for bringing attention and attracting people to the cause. Such platforms are an ideal medium for the dissemination of anti-vaccination ideas, which often entail the spread of false or “fake” news and information questioning vaccine efficacy and safety. As this epidemic of online fake news is causing major disruptions in vaccine programs around the world, the current study employed the Heuristic Systematic model (HSM) to elucidate …

The Dark Side Of Social Media: The Case Of The Mexican Drug War, Nilda M. Garcia Dec 2017

The Dark Side Of Social Media: The Case Of The Mexican Drug War, Nilda M. Garcia

Open Access Dissertations

The rapid increase in the use of social media during the “war on drugs” in Mexico, especially in the first decades of the 21st century, has stimulated a growing research agenda in academia. To date, this scholarship has focused primarily on investigating the opportunities social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube offer to civilians as organizing mechanisms, to fill the informational vacuum left by the tightly selfcensured mainstream media outlets, and as a tool for survival. Yet, in Mexico, the use of these platforms has taken a darker, more sinister turn. Research exploring the use of social media …

Examining The Impact Of Electronic Word-Of-Mouth On Consumer Responses Toward Company: An Alignment-Social Influence Model, Zifei Chen Jun 2017

Examining The Impact Of Electronic Word-Of-Mouth On Consumer Responses Toward Company: An Alignment-Social Influence Model, Zifei Chen

Open Access Dissertations

To address the growing demand to understand the impact of consumer advocacy and stakeholder behavior in public relations research and practices, this dissertation examined the impact of electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM) on consumer responses. It fills the extant eWOM research gap by addressing consumers’ prior informational and attitudinal base before exposure to eWOM, and anticipated interaction (i.e., lurking and posting behavior) powered by the dynamic, interactive nature of social media. A consolidated Alignment-Social Influence (ASI) model was proposed drawing on interdisciplinary insights from public relations, marketing, consumer behavior, and psychology. Two central research questions were answered through an empirical test of …

Visual Analytics Of Location-Based Social Networks For Decision Support, Junghoon Chae Dec 2016

Visual Analytics Of Location-Based Social Networks For Decision Support, Junghoon Chae

Open Access Dissertations

Recent advances in technology have enabled people to add location information to social networks called Location-Based Social Networks (LBSNs) where people share their communication and whereabouts not only in their daily lives, but also during abnormal situations, such as crisis events. However, since the volume of the data exceeds the boundaries of human analytical capabilities, it is almost impossible to perform a straightforward qualitative analysis of the data. The emerging field of visual analytics has been introduced to tackle such challenges by integrating the approaches from statistical data analysis and human computer interaction into highly interactive visual environments. Based on …

Data Mining Twitter For Cancer, Diabetes, And Asthma Insights, Kimberly Chulis Aug 2016

Data Mining Twitter For Cancer, Diabetes, And Asthma Insights, Kimberly Chulis

Open Access Dissertations

Twitter may be a data resource to support healthcare research. Literature is still limited related to the potential of Twitter data as it relates to healthcare. The purpose of this study was to contrast the processes by which a large collection of unstructured disease-related tweets could be converted into structured data to be further analyzed. This was done with the objective of gaining insights into the content and behavioral patterns associated with disease-specific communications on Twitter. Twelve months of Twitter data related to cancer, diabetes, and asthma were collected to form a baseline dataset containing over 34 million tweets. As …

Facebook Engagement On College Students' Interpersonal And Intrapersonal Functioning, Scott S. Deatherage Aug 2016

Facebook Engagement On College Students' Interpersonal And Intrapersonal Functioning, Scott S. Deatherage

Open Access Dissertations

In recent years college students have incorporated social-networking sites, and more specifically Facebook, into their daily lives. Facebook has received empirical attention; attention focused on what students are doing on Facebook, who its users are, and, more recently, why students access Facebook. However, researchers who have assessed motivations for accessing Facebook have emphasized how motivations are associated with certain activities, and have not simultaneously and directly examined how activities and motivations are associated with both maladaptive and adaptive factors of students’ interpersonal and intrapersonal functioning. The purpose of the present study was to examine how Facebook engagement is associated with …

Understanding Computer-Mediated Health Communication: Meta-Analytical Reviews Of Social-Media-Based Interventions, Online Support Group, And Interactive Health, Qinghua Yang

Open Access Dissertations

Computer-mediated communication (CMC) has been increasingly applied in health communication to provide interventions and education. A key question confronting health communication research is the effects of new technology on health communication. Despite the advantages of computer-mediated health communication (CMHC), the overall results of computer-mediated health interventions are mixed. To provide insights to CMHC scholars and generate cumulative knowledge, the current dissertation project consists of three meta-analytical reviews under the umbrella of CMHC. Specifically, three studies analyzed the general effectiveness of social-mediabased health intervention, online support groups, and online interactive health interventions. Moreover, a series of moderator analyses were conducted to …

How Does The Fortune 500 Use Twitter To Engage Stakeholders? An Examination Of Interactivity, Message Valence, And Company Type, Michael North

Open Access Dissertations

This study examines how Fortune 500 companies use Twitter on a daily basis. Chapters include an introduction explaining the importance of Twitter to companies by discussing some of the most damaging 140-character mishaps and some impressive crisis management strategies. A literature review is presented beginning with a discussion of computer-mediate communication (CMC), interactivity, word-of-mouth (WOM), message valence, and ending with a section differentiating between business-to-consumer (B2C) and business-to-business (B2B) companies. Lastly, the methodology, operationalizations, and research design are presented to examine companies’ interactivity with users, message valence, how B2Bs differ from B2Cs, and how long users can expect to wait …

Does Power Make Us Mean? An Investigation Of Empowerment And Revenge Behaviors In The Cyberspace, Zongchao Li May 2015

Does Power Make Us Mean? An Investigation Of Empowerment And Revenge Behaviors In The Cyberspace, Zongchao Li

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation investigated consumer response mechanism in a service failure context. A social-media-based Service Failure Response Model was introduced that incorporated emotive antecedents, behavioral outcomes, a mediation process, and moderating factors. The model integrated the framework of psychological empowerment, and explored how social media usage empowered users and whether this power transferred into unique behavioral patterns. It was argued that perception of power increased an action orientation in the power holder, which transferred into a revenge behavior when users complained about the failure on social media to publicly shame the company. The study proposed 16 hypotheses and two research questions …

This study used an online questionnaire to survey 276 first-time, non-transfer undergraduate freshmen students at the University of Miami to determine the perceived influence of electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM) on their college search and choice compared to that of traditional word-of-mouth (WOM). In addition, eWOM’s influence was examined during the search and choice phases of the three-phased college choice process and when consumed across various form of social media.
