Externalizing Problems And Hispanic/Latinx Adolescents: A Bioecological Approach, Evan Thomas Stanforth Nov 2019

Externalizing Problems And Hispanic/Latinx Adolescents: A Bioecological Approach, Evan Thomas Stanforth

Open Access Dissertations

Externalizing problems often develop during adolescence and cause harm to the individuals with these problems and to others in society. Hispanic/Latinx adolescents develop externalizing problems at relatively higher rates and in ways that involve systemic influences. The present study aimed to enhance clarity in this area by examining externalizing problems as a dimension of psychopathology and applying constructs of Bronfenbrenner’s bioecological theory (2005). This was attempted by examining: a) externalizing problems as a continuous spectrum, b1) relations the problems have with proximal processes of adolescent-caregiver relations, b2) and exploring differences across contexts specified as three immigration-based groups (1st generation immigrant, …

The Influence Of Intersectionality On Bullying, Teen Dating Violence, And Suicide Risk Among Bisexual Adolescents, Ariel Uniqua Smith Jul 2019

The Influence Of Intersectionality On Bullying, Teen Dating Violence, And Suicide Risk Among Bisexual Adolescents, Ariel Uniqua Smith

Open Access Dissertations

Suicide is a significant health problem for sexual minority youth (SMY) in general, and for bisexual youth, who currently have the highest risk for suicide compared to lesbian/gay and heterosexual adolescents in the U.S. Bisexual youth experience “bisexual-specific” stigma and discrimination due to their sexual orientation, and both stigma and discrimination have been linked to increased suicidality and negative mental health outcomes among bisexual individuals. This cross-sectional, descriptive study is guided by the Intersectional Minority Stress theoretical model and uses a secondary analysis of pooled 2015 and 2017 national YRBSS data to examine three specific aims. All analyses are conducted …

The Impact Of Socio-Ecological Risk Factor Clustering On Mental, Emotional, And Behavioral Problems In Hispanic Adolescents, Lila Asfour Cathcart Nov 2016

The Impact Of Socio-Ecological Risk Factor Clustering On Mental, Emotional, And Behavioral Problems In Hispanic Adolescents, Lila Asfour Cathcart

Open Access Dissertations

Hispanic youth are often at greater risk for developing mental, emotional, and behavioral (MEB) problems, such as substance use, sexual risk behaviors, and internalizing and externalizing symptoms, compared to non-Hispanic white youth. Socio-ecological risk and protective factors, including family, school, peer, and acculturation factors, have been shown to be associated individually with a variety of MEB problems. This study examines the clustering of these risk and protective factors and evaluates whether there are specific subgroups of Hispanic adolescents, who are at greater risk for a variety of MEB problems. Data come from two randomized controlled trials, and were collected at …

Social Metaperception In High Functioning Adolescents With Autism, Lauren V. Usher Apr 2016

Social Metaperception In High Functioning Adolescents With Autism, Lauren V. Usher

Open Access Dissertations

Children and adolescents with high functioning autism (HFA) display social deficits despite their average IQ levels. Social metaperception, or one’s ability to perceive what a social partner thinks of oneself during a social interaction, is hypothesized to support social competence. In this study, the novel Perceptions and Metaperceptions Questionnaire was designed to quantify and compare social metaperception abilities in adolescents with and without HFA. For all adolescents, accuracy of social metaperceptions (how well they matched with peer’s ratings) was unrelated to theory of mind abilities. All adolescents’ perceptions of their peers were associated with their metaperceptions. Interestingly, HFA adolescents tended …

Barriers To Treatment Adherence In Adolescents With Cystic Fibrosis: A Mixed-Methods Analysis, Katherine Ann Mclean Dec 2015

Barriers To Treatment Adherence In Adolescents With Cystic Fibrosis: A Mixed-Methods Analysis, Katherine Ann Mclean

Open Access Dissertations

Poor treatment adherence is a significant challenge for patients, parents, and healthcare providers. Treatment adherence is a serious concern for adolescents with cystic fibrosis (CF), a life-limiting genetic disorder affecting multiple organ systems. Although some barriers to adherence have been documented in CF, little is known about how these barriers interact at an individual level. The purpose of this study was to conduct a mixed-methods analysis of barriers to adherence reported by adolescents and young adults with CF and their parents. This study utilized qualitative interviews and quantitative measures of adherence and psychosocial functioning to identify key barriers in relation …

Prospective Associations Between Adolescents' Peer Victimization And Physical Health Problems, Whitney M. Herge May 2014

Prospective Associations Between Adolescents' Peer Victimization And Physical Health Problems, Whitney M. Herge

Open Access Dissertations

Objective. This study evaluated an empirical model of peer victimization (PV) in adolescents via latent class analysis (LCA) and latent profile analysis (LPA). The study also evaluated the relationship between PV types (i.e., overt, relational, reputational, cyber) and physical health problems (including somatic and sleep problems). Adolescent anxiety was assessed as a possible mediator of the relationship between PV and physical health problems. Method. 1067 adolescents aged 13 to 19 years (M age = 15.80 years; 57% female; 80% Hispanic) were recruited from two high schools in Miami-Dade County and were assessed at 3 time points, each about 1½ months …

The Effects Of Health Insurance Of Adolescents On Their Future Well-Being, Lin Zhou Jun 2013

The Effects Of Health Insurance Of Adolescents On Their Future Well-Being, Lin Zhou

Open Access Dissertations

The number of uninsured children in the United States has declined since the late 1990s. According to the National Health Interview Survey, the percentage of children who were uninsured at the time of the survey decreased from 13.9% in 1997 to 7.0% in 2011. Nevertheless, 5.3 million children lacked health insurance coverage in 2011. Among uninsured children, adolescents tend to be uninsured at higher rates than younger children. The effects of health insurance coverage on children have been widely studied in economics and health care policy literature. Findings have indicated positive correlations between health insurance coverage and children’s health care …

The Development And Impact Of An Online Social Networking Community For Adolescents With Cystic Fibrosis, Sandy Liliana Romero Apr 2013

The Development And Impact Of An Online Social Networking Community For Adolescents With Cystic Fibrosis, Sandy Liliana Romero

Open Access Dissertations

This is the first qualitative study to examine the social support functions of a social networking website for adolescents with Cystic Fibrosis (CF) over an academic year. Patients with CF are segregated and not allowed to meet face-to-face; this networking site was evaluated as an alternative for providing peer support. Age and gender differences in website usage were examined in participants enrolled in the CFfone study. Thematic analyses were used to examine the provision of four types of social support: companionship, emotional, informational, and instrumental, in relation to topics raised on the website. Results suggested that adolescents used the website …

The New Frontier Of Peer Victimization: Prospective Associations Between Adolescents' On-Line Peer Victimization And Internalizing Symptoms, Ryan Richard Landoll Jul 2012

The New Frontier Of Peer Victimization: Prospective Associations Between Adolescents' On-Line Peer Victimization And Internalizing Symptoms, Ryan Richard Landoll

Open Access Dissertations

Peer victimization in adolescence has been consistently associated with increases in internalizing symptoms, such as depression and social anxiety. Recently, both empirical and public attention has focused on cyber victimization, or negative peer experiences that occur in an on-line context. Adolescent Internet use has reached nearly universal rates (recent estimates report over 93% of adolescents have access to the Internet, with the majority accessing the Internet daily), and the rise of social networking and media tools has created a diverse and complicated environment for adolescents to interact within in cyberspace. Research has made great strides in identifying the potential negative …

Expository And Narrative Discourse In Adolescents With Reading And Language Impairments: Assessment And Intervention, Beverly Iuliano

Open Access Dissertations

The purpose of this current study was to first examine through assessments and the use of school-based disability criteria, the quantitative and qualitative patterns in phonological processing, phonological working memory, oral retellings, and oral and written narratives in middle school-aged children with reading disabilities (RD; N=10) and those with language impairments (LI; N=5) in order to provide data to further explain the complex profiles of these two clinical populations. Secondly, a single-subject multiple baseline across subjects design study examined the effectiveness of an intervention program targeting expository and narrative discourse in adolescents with language and reading deficits (N=4). Expository and …

Social Aggression In Children And Adolescents: A Meta-Analytic Review, Cathy Longa Aug 2011

Social Aggression In Children And Adolescents: A Meta-Analytic Review, Cathy Longa

Open Access Dissertations

Social aggression has been widely studied; however, findings have been inconsistent leading to confusion within the current literature. Previous research has linked social aggression to negative outcomes; including poor peer relations, internalizing symptoms, and low levels of empathy; as well as positive attributes, including prosocial behaviors, high social status, and social intelligence. This meta-analysis examined the relationship between social aggression and various correlates, both positive and negative, as well as how age and gender moderate these relationships. With 896 correlations derived from 108 studies (of a total of 107 published articles), the results using the random-effects model for computing overall …

Results From A Pilot Translational Health And Wellness Based Summer Program In Minority Adolescents, Elizabeth Skidmore Edwards

Open Access Dissertations

The Healthy Start Summer Program (HSSP) is a seven-week summer program that strives to provide health and wellness education in a manner that is applicable to everyday living. The primary goal of the HSSP is to improve physical fitness levels and the psychosocial variables associated with exercise in a minority adolescent population, while providing the tools necessary for students to maintain these changes for four months after the program. Participants and control subjects were evaluated at the beginning and end of their respective summer programs, then followed up four months post-program to evaluate the maintenance of these changes. The students …

Measurement Of Disease Specific Social Support In Adolescents With Cystic Fibrosis, David H. Barker Jun 2010

Measurement Of Disease Specific Social Support In Adolescents With Cystic Fibrosis, David H. Barker

Open Access Dissertations

This study documented the creation and initial validation of the Perceived Adolescent Social Support: Cystic Fibrosis (PASS-CF) inventory. The inventory was developed from semi-structured interviews of adolescents with cystic fibrosis (CF) and measured both supportive and non-supportive behaviors provided to adolescents by their family and friends. This study reports the findings from these interviews, results of the pilot testing of the measure, exploratory analyses of the utility of individual items, and the relationships between supportive and non-supportive behaviors and important clinical outcomes, such as treatment adherence, health-related quality of life (HRQoL), and other health outcomes. In particular, the study compared …

Mediators Of The Association Between Risk For Mania And Close Relationship Quality In Adolescents, Rebecca S. Siegel Jun 2010

Mediators Of The Association Between Risk For Mania And Close Relationship Quality In Adolescents, Rebecca S. Siegel

Open Access Dissertations

Bipolar disorder is an extremely devastating illness, and increasingly robust evidence indicates that it emerges during adolescence. Also during adolescence, peer relationships, particularly close friendships and romantic relationships, become a central mechanism for social maturation and emotional development. The consequences of mania on the development of peer relationships have received little attention. Thus, the purpose of the current study was to examine the association between mania and close peer relationship quality in a community sample of adolescents. Two types of close peer relationships, close friendships and romantic relationships, were evaluated. In addition, the current study examined two potential mediators of …

Peer Victimization And Psychosocial Outcomes In Adolescents: Role Of Social Support And Disclosure, Lisa D. Bailey Apr 2009

Peer Victimization And Psychosocial Outcomes In Adolescents: Role Of Social Support And Disclosure, Lisa D. Bailey

Open Access Dissertations

During adolescence, peer relationships become increasingly important in various aspects of development, such as self-esteem and emotional adjustment. Unfortunately, a number of adolescents experience peer victimization, placing them at increased risk of emotional and behavioral problems. Research has consistently demonstrated the link between peer victimization and poor outcomes. However, exploration of the mechanisms underlying this link, including potential buffers of negative outcomes, is needed. The current study examined social support as a moderator of the relationship between peer victimization and maladjustment in order to assess whether social support from adults and peers protects adolescents from developing emotional and/or behavioral problems. …
