The GAP Project is a K-12 academic success program delivered to student cohorts beginning in the seventh grade. The program uses a co-curricular, blended learning model. Students at the local colleges support the program as volunteers and interns that serving as facilitators and curriculum developers. The program seeks to generate a pipeline of student cohorts from local K-12 schools with increased college-going culture.

This engaging, interactive, self-reflective session focuses on equity at the classroom level. It challenges teachers to look within themselves relative to how they relate to and engage with their at-risk students of color and other underserved students. It challenges teachers to confront whatever biases they may bring to these students that may be either blatant, subtle, undetected or unacknowledged. It argues that high-performance is an impossibility in classroom environments where equity fails to exist.

Francis Scott Key Middle School in Montgomery County Maryland learned that building the cultural proficiency of teachers had to move beyond strategies. Francis Scott Key’s Student Voice Project helped both teachers and students transform their thinking about instruction, communication, and school improvement.

In this engaging hands-on presentation, Keith L. Brown, challenges the paradigm as it relates to the widely known and accepted idea of the “Hidden Curriculum,” which in essence refers to the unwritten, unofficial and often unintended lessons, values and perspectives that students of color in particular and many others in general learn in school.
