Cultural Influences And Negotiation: Chinese Conflict Resolution Preferences And Negotiation Behavior, Xiao-Ling Sheng
Cultural Influences And Negotiation: Chinese Conflict Resolution Preferences And Negotiation Behavior, Xiao-Ling Sheng
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
As international trade between China and the United States has increased markedly in recent years, negotiation behavior between Chinese and Americans has become a timely issue. Most research conducted in this area discusses the fundamental cultural differences between East and West, as well as the difficulties Westerners have in negotiating with the Chinese. Little was written on the actual negotiation behavior itself. This paper is focused on the negotiation behavior between Chinese and American business people. Following a review of relevant research, the author found that both Confucian philosophy and Taoistic philosophy continue to provide the foundations of Chinese cultural …
Revolution Of Reforms: The Kingdom Of Bavaria In The Napoleonic Era, 1799-1815, Scott Anderson
Revolution Of Reforms: The Kingdom Of Bavaria In The Napoleonic Era, 1799-1815, Scott Anderson
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
For many years, scholarship covering the Napoleonic satellite kingdoms has centered on the overriding presence of Napoleon Bonaparte without looking a great deal at the kingdoms that supported him. Since the recent publication of Stuart Woolf's Napoleon's Integration of Europe the focus of study on these satellite kingdoms will change. Bavaria's history in particular needs to be examined, especially since a clear study will reveal much of Bavaria's modernization during these years was already underway before Napoleon assimilated it into his empire. However, much of that progressive policy would not have been enacted without Napoleon's protection. This project therefore will …
The Effects Of Social Security On Private Saving, Zhenghong Lu
The Effects Of Social Security On Private Saving, Zhenghong Lu
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The purpose of this paper is to re-estimate the impact of Social Security on aggregate private saving behavior by using new time series data for the period 1947 through 1993. The analysis is based on the life-cycle hypothesis developed by Modigliani and Ando. Feldstein's extended life-cycle model, incorporating Social Security Wealth (SSW) into the traditional life-cycle model, provides the building block for this paper. A Generalized Least Squares (GLS) procedure is used to perform the time series analysis in order to avoid autocorrelation, which is usually associated with the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) procedure. Compared with OLS estimations, the results …
Birth And After Birth And Painting Churches: Tina Howe's Examination Of Love And Savagery In The American Family, Sarah Ennis-Chambers
Birth And After Birth And Painting Churches: Tina Howe's Examination Of Love And Savagery In The American Family, Sarah Ennis-Chambers
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Playwright Tina Howe has been quoted as saying that "family life has been over-romanticized; the savagery has not been seen enough in the theatre and in movies . . ." (Moore 101). In two of her plays, Birth and After Birth (1973) and Painting Churches (1983), that savagery appears in the form of name-calling, jealousy, apathy, disregard, and physical and mental abuse. A juxtaposition of the similarities in Birth and After Birth and Painting Churches will explain the "savagery" Howe is examining. The earlier play is written in the surrealistic style of lonesco and Beckett, playwrights who have been a …
Temporal Changes In The Levels Of Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid In The Brain Of The Cockroach, Leucophaea Maderae, Jonathan Newton
Temporal Changes In The Levels Of Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid In The Brain Of The Cockroach, Leucophaea Maderae, Jonathan Newton
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Circadian rhythms have been shown to exist in all studied species and play an important role in their survival. The cockroach is an excellent model organism in which to study circadian systems because of the wealth of background information regarding both its anatomy and circadian system. Clock activity measured electrophysiologically in the cockroach system is 180 degrees out of phase with locomotor activity, with the maximum neural output occurring in the morning, twelve hours prior to the onset of locomotor activity. This inverse relationship of locomotor and neural activity suggests that the clock output may be inhibitory. In vertebrates, the …
Site Directed Mutagenesis Of A Putative Protease Cleavage Site Within The 105 Kilodation Protein Of Southern Bean Mosaic Virus, Jingyu Shi
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
There are four open reading frames (ORF) in three positive-sense translational phases of Southern Bean Mosaic Virus (SBMV). ORF2 codes for a 105 KDa polyprotein which is proposed to be autocatalytically cleaved into smaller functional proteins. Amino acid sequence homology between the SBMV and poliovirus, foot and mouth disease virus, and cowpea mosaic virus reveal that SBMV has a similar genomic organization to picornaviruses with a conserved order: Vpg (Viral protein, genome-linked )-protease-replicase. Two Gln-Ser (QS) amino acid pairs within the 105 KDa polyprotein, C75= 930-936, C60= 1305-1310, are proposed to be the cleavage sites based on 1) similar structural …

From a thorough review of the literature, this project identifies the utility and usefulness of student ratings as one element in the evaluation of instruction. The literature review addressed the following questions: (a) Do we need student ratings of instructors? (b) Can student rating data be used to improve instruction? (c) can we be sure that the data and the means by which they …
Antibody Response To Trypanosoma Cruzi During The Course Of Infection In Mice Held At Elevated Environmental Temperature, Lianyong Gao
Antibody Response To Trypanosoma Cruzi During The Course Of Infection In Mice Held At Elevated Environmental Temperature, Lianyong Gao
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
It has been demonstrated that changes in environmental temperature can influence the resistance of mice to Trypanosoma cruzi (the causative agent of Chagas' disease in humans) infection. This increased resistance is not only reflected by decreased parasitemias and increased longevity but also by enhanced parasite-specific and nonspecific immune responsiveness in infected mice. The antibody response to heterologous antigen has been demonstrated to be greatly enhanced in infected mice held at elevated temperature. However, the parasite-specific antibody response was reported to be lower in infected mice maintained at 36°C than at room temperature (RT) during early stage of infection, although it …
The Dark Ride, Brandon Kwaitek
The Dark Ride, Brandon Kwaitek
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
An intersection of vernacular architecture studies and American studies, "The Dark Ride" defines the standard amusement park attraction both generally within the contexts of horrific iconography and the history of amusement devices and structures, and also specifically within the contexts of five amusement park environments. As a "ride-thru Halloween," the dark ride maintains a popular tradition of deriding and mocking the symbols of hell and death. As a variety of theater, the dark ride shares its technological and structural origins with primitive cinema (whose own century-long development intertwines with that of the dark ride) and the scenic attractions of late …

A Palette Of Unconventional Symbolism: Color Imagery In Three Margaret Atwood Novels, Shannon Martin
A Palette Of Unconventional Symbolism: Color Imagery In Three Margaret Atwood Novels, Shannon Martin
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
In this thesis, the writer examines the color imagery in three Margaret Atwood novels: Surfacing, Cat's Eye, and The Handmaid's Tale. Atwood uses color in unconventional ways by forcing colors to symbolize the opposite of their common meanings, by allowing colors to represent simultaneously two opposing ideas, and by disregarding traditional color meanings by creating her own unique associations. Atwood's color imagery supports her thematic concerns in that through her themes--as with her use of color--she challenges the reader's expectations by throwing into question many conventional ideas about progress, religion, and the sex-gender system.
The Relationship Between Vision And Athletic Performance, Steven Richard Wininger
The Relationship Between Vision And Athletic Performance, Steven Richard Wininger
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
In today's competitive world of athletics it is not uncommon to discover a few athletes actively involved in some form of vision enhancement motivated by the promise that the exercises will improve their athletic performance. A review of past and present literature in the area of sports vision revealed that these athletes are performing exercises based upon a very weak scientific foundation. Most of the research investigating the relationship between vision and athletic performance has been plagued by flawed methodology, as well as extremely low numbers of subjects. The purpose of this study was to test for any relationship between …
Will Seek Funding Help Bring Equity In Educational Output To Kentucky's School Districts?, William Winfrey
Will Seek Funding Help Bring Equity In Educational Output To Kentucky's School Districts?, William Winfrey
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The Constitution of the United States gave the individual states the responsibility of providing an adequate minimum education to their citizens. With this responsibility came the additional responsibility of financing the educational process. I will examine the historical thoughts on funding, emphasizing Kentucky, past and present. An ordinary least squares regression analysis will be used to predict the success of the Support Educational Excellence in Kentucky formula. Success is defined as bringing equity of testbased outputs to all school districts. The model and variables are then examined and conclusions drawn concerning the new funding formula.
The Effects Of Race And Evidence On Jury Decision-Making In Sexual Harassment Cases, Riley Ross
The Effects Of Race And Evidence On Jury Decision-Making In Sexual Harassment Cases, Riley Ross
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Although sexual harassment has received a considerable amount of publicity since the Clarence Thomas confirmation hearings, current literature lacks an abundance of studies examining the outcome of sexual harassment cases. The researcher sought to examine the effect of an extralegal (legally irrelevant) factor and the amount of evidence on jury decision making. Specifically, the race of the defendant served as the extralegal factor, while the amount of evidence presented was determined in relation to how many variables (0, 2, or 4 sources of evidence) were included in a particular sexual harassment scenario. (The four variables used were: the presence of …
Serial Pattern Learning By Event Observation: Effects Of Varying Amounts Of Pattern Experience, Roger Stubblefield
Serial Pattern Learning By Event Observation: Effects Of Varying Amounts Of Pattern Experience, Roger Stubblefield
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The present study was designed to replicate the findings by Howard, Mutter & Howard (1992) that (1) overt behavioral responding is not prerequisite to serial pattern learning and (2) that observation produces a qualitatively different form of representation than an overt motor response. We also sought to extend these findings by determining how much exposure to the pattern is necessary to replicate these effects and by examining the role of stimulus-to-response mapping by adding an additional response group (unmapped-response). A version of the serial learning task used by Howard et al. (1992) was used. The task consisted of two phases. …
Roadside Memorials In Five South Central Kentucky Counties, Thomas Zimmerman
Roadside Memorials In Five South Central Kentucky Counties, Thomas Zimmerman
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Roadside memorials in Allen, Barren, Butler, Edmonson, and Warren Counties in south central Kentucky mark the sites of automobile fatalities. These informal memorials are construced by family or friends of the deceased. Thirty-one memorials are found throughout these five counties. The majority of these memorials take on one of three forms: crosses, crosses with flowers, and standing styrofoam-based flower arrangements. Crosses, particularly white wooden crosses, are the most common element in these memorials. Unlike most death-related material culture studies, this research is built heavily upon interviews and conversations with those who construct and maintain the memorials. Much of the analysis …
The Postmodern Improvisor, Paul Caraher
The Postmodern Improvisor, Paul Caraher
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This thesis represents a revitalization of the thesis form because it has organically blossomed from an integrated consciousness. Instead of the pre-existing thesis form for a Master of Arts Degree in English bending, limiting, and shaping the content, I have shaped the form according to my own synthetic ambition, resulting in a fusion of elements from both a researched and a creative thesis. This strategy is justified since the very subject of the thesis stresses the improviser's ongoing urge to create as the spontaneous moment/impulse requires while simultaneously creating an organic frame or unique inner logic. Above all, this project …
Uniqueness Of Solutions Of Differential Equations, Gerald Head
Uniqueness Of Solutions Of Differential Equations, Gerald Head
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Uniqueness of solutions for ordinary differential equations is studied. The classical theorems which guarantee uniqueness are surveyed, including discussion and examples. Other results concerning uniqueness are considered in the final chapter, including the relationship between convergence of successive approximations and uniqueness, non-uniqueness and continuous dependence on initial conditions.
Gröbner Bases And Syzygy Modules, Yonggan Zhao
Gröbner Bases And Syzygy Modules, Yonggan Zhao
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The theory of Gröbner bases has become a useful tool in computational commutative algebra. In this paper, we outline some basic results, as they are found in [1], including the concepts of terms ordering, multivariable polynomial division, Gröbner bases, Buchberger's algorithm, and syzygy modules. Specially, we present several equivalent definitions for Gröbner bases and prove how to compute a Gröbner basis for an ideal I of A = k[x1, x2, • • • , xn] generated by {fl, f2, • • • , f8} through Buchberger's algorithm. As an application of Gröbner bases, we present a standard method (see [1]) …
Undergraduates' Attitudes Toward The Causes Of Poverty And Homelessness: Individualistic Or Structural, Bentley Ponder
Undergraduates' Attitudes Toward The Causes Of Poverty And Homelessness: Individualistic Or Structural, Bentley Ponder
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The objective of this thesis was to test whether undergraduate students support individualistic, structural or mixed explanations in explaining the causes of poverty and homelessness. The study was undertaken with the assumption that undergraduates would be more likely to use individualistic explanations, rather than structural, as previous poverty perceptional studies had found. A short questionnaire was administered in March and April 1994 to students in a mid-size Southern University. The final sample consisted of 299 students. Cross-tabular analysis, bivariate correlations, and multiple regression were used to analyze the data. Surprisingly, results indicated that students were more likely to support structural …
The Effect Of Dietary Supplemented Vitamin E And Selenium On Experimental Chagas' Disease, Brenda Bennett
The Effect Of Dietary Supplemented Vitamin E And Selenium On Experimental Chagas' Disease, Brenda Bennett
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Dietary supplementation with increased levels of vitamin E can enhance the immune system of C3HeB/FeJ mice to enable many of them to survive an otherwise lethal dose of Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas' disease. To study the role of diet on the course of experimental Chagas' disease, C3HeB/FeJ mice were fed pelleted, synthetic food containing no vitamin E and selenium, 800 IU/kg vitamin E, 2 ppm selenium, or food containing 800 IU/kg vitamin E plus 2 ppm selenium. Mice on synthetic food were compared to control mice fed a commonly used Purina rodent chow # 5001. After diet …
Client Satisfaction And Kentucky Adult Day Care Services, Karen Beavers
Client Satisfaction And Kentucky Adult Day Care Services, Karen Beavers
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Adult day care is a new and rapidly growing alternative to long term care for the burgeoning population of frail and disabled elderly. A review of the literature regarding adult day care services revealed a limited number of studies addressing client satisfaction. The current study of 68 participants of nine Kentucky adult day health and social model adult day care centers assessed client satisfaction with services and explored variables related to satisfaction. It was hypothesized that clients who preferred to be at the adult day care center rather than in another location would report higher levels of satisfaction with services …

This study was conducted to determine the extent to which the transdisciplinary teaming approach is being utilized in early intervention programs serving infants and toddlers birth through three years in the state of Kentucky. Information was gathered through a survey mailed to intervention agencies in Kentucky. Of the 65 agencies to whom surveys were sent, 30 were considered usable and analyzed. The largest percentage of surveys were completed by respondents working in a coordinator's position with an educational level of at least a bachelor's degree. Results of the study indicated that programs are not fully utilizing the transdisciplinary teaming model …
The Relationship Between Risk For Drug Abuse And Meaning In Life, Paul Turner
The Relationship Between Risk For Drug Abuse And Meaning In Life, Paul Turner
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Drug abuse continues to be one of the most significant problems in the United States today. Attempts to understand drug abuse have produced numerous multidimensional prevention and treatment models. These models have resulted in the identification of psychological, social and biological risk factors related to drug abuse. In this study, the risk for drug abuse was assessed in 311 college students. A questionnaire was developed to measure risk. The questionnaire assessed risk for abuse predicted by the following factors: academic performance, coping and psychological health, religiosity, family and peer drug use, and the individual's past and current drug use. Based …
An Object Oriented Implemtation Of Fractal Image Compression, Darrell Burkhead
An Object Oriented Implemtation Of Fractal Image Compression, Darrell Burkhead
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The technique of Fractal Image Compression, although new, has been described in several ways. Thus far, all descriptions of this compression algorithm read by the author have been in procedural form. The purpose of this paper is to present the Fractal Image Compression algorithm in an object-oriented form and to point out the advantages of this organization. The main advantages of taking an object-oriented approach to this problem are flexibility and maintainability. Different aspects of this algorithm are handled by different objects, thereby allowing for easy customization and testing of each part. Another advantage of this approach is that the …
The Peer Status Of Gifted Children Across Educational Settings, Angela Cunningham
The Peer Status Of Gifted Children Across Educational Settings, Angela Cunningham
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Although previous studies have examined the peer status of gifted students in upper elementary grades, very little is known about the social status and peer acceptance of gifted children in the lower elementary grades (k-3). In the present study, the researcher compared the peer status of teacher nominated gifted kindergarten children to that of their non-gifted classmates on measures of peer acceptance and social status. Also compared was the peer status of gifted children in the lower elementary grades (1-3) within the regular classroom and an enrichment classroom on measures of peer acceptance and social status. Results indicate that gifted …
Things That Go Bump In The Night: An Examination Of Magical Thinking In Young Children, Elizabeth Easton
Things That Go Bump In The Night: An Examination Of Magical Thinking In Young Children, Elizabeth Easton
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Past research has shown that children as young as age 3 years are able to distinguish the difference between mental entities and real objects (Estes, Wellman, & Woolley, 1989). Yet, many children still display persistent fears of imaginary creatures, which they claim are not real. In the present study, a replication-extension of P. Harris, E. Brown, C. Marriott, S. Whittall, and S. Harmer (1991), the researcher examined children's perceptions of imaginary creatures through a brief interview. Children were asked to pretend there existed either a monster or a rabbit in one of two large boxes. Children were then left alone …

Reliability And Validity Of The Universal Nonverbal Intelligence Test For Children With Hearing Impairments, Erin Richardson
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This researcher investigated the reliability and validity of the Universal Nonverbal Intelligence Test (UNIT) for a hearing-impaired population. The subjects consisted of 15 hearing-impaired children between the ages of five and eight who are are enrolled in special education programs for the hearing-impaired. Three week test-retest reliability coefficients were moderate to high for all subtests (.65 to .89) and high for all scales and the total score (.88 to .96). Intracorrelations support the structure of the UNIT in that subtests demonstrated high correlations with the scale they were purported to represent. Concurrent validity was assessed with the Naglieri Draw-A-Person (DAP) …
An Interactive Graphical User Interface Generator In The Client-Server Computational Model, Chavva Sudarshan
An Interactive Graphical User Interface Generator In The Client-Server Computational Model, Chavva Sudarshan
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Providing a user friendly and sophisticated user interface is a time-consuming and difficult task. On the other hand, the success of a software system is directly related to the quality of the user interface that it provides. In this thesis, a technique for the development of an automatic user interface is described and implemented; that is, we provide a tool that can be used to develop user interfaces on a platform known as the X-Window System. The hallmark of this tool is its ability to aid in developing reasonably sophisticated Graphical User Interfaces (GUI) interactively in relatively short time. The …
