Original Intent And The Reagan Court: A New Approach To The Madisonian Dilemma?, Deborah Nelson Snow Dec 1989

Original Intent And The Reagan Court: A New Approach To The Madisonian Dilemma?, Deborah Nelson Snow

Masters Theses

During the Reagan years, a demand was heard for a change in the way in which the Supreme Court decides cases. Answering the call for a "jurisprudence of original intention," scholars, politicians, judges, and justices debated the use of this constitutional theory. In a review of cases decided under the religion clauses of the First Amendment in the years between 1960 and 1988, the opinions of Reagan and non-Reagan appointees to the Supreme Court are analyzed to determine the use of references to original intent by the justices. In particular, the problem raised by Bork and labeled "the Madisonian dilemma" …

Continuous Passive Motion After Knee Arthroscopy, Lisa Bauman Dec 1989

Continuous Passive Motion After Knee Arthroscopy, Lisa Bauman

Masters Theses

The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of continuous passive motion (CPM) after arthroscopy. A CPM machine was used one hour following knee surgery. Statistical analysis was performed to determine differences in knee range of motion (ROM), strength and circumference, at time intervals preoperatively, one, seven, and twenty-eight days following surgery. The analysis of variance revealed no significant difference between the CPM and control groups for any parameter. A significant interaction effect between treatment and time was demonstrated one day after surgery for extension, joint line circumference, and midthigh circumference; and 28 days after surgery for the …

Relativistic And Non-Relativistic Nuclear Charge Form Factors, Tao Wang Dec 1989

Relativistic And Non-Relativistic Nuclear Charge Form Factors, Tao Wang

Masters Theses

This thesis presents an examination that the two nuclear charge form factors, relativistic and non-relativistic, are equivalent approximately in an appreciable range. The relativistic one is contributed by both vector charge density and tensor charge density. And the non-relativistic charge form factor is contributed by the nuclear densities from experimental electron scattering cross section, these densities are fundamental to much of nuclear structure physics.

The Dirac equation is used to calculate the vector charge density and tensor density, because the charge density from the analysis of the experimental data may be compared with proton charge densities obtained from various models …

A Reanalysis Of The Osteological And Cultural Remains From Ausmus Burial Cave, Claiborne County, Tennessee (3ce20), Carole Elizabeth Tucker Dec 1989

A Reanalysis Of The Osteological And Cultural Remains From Ausmus Burial Cave, Claiborne County, Tennessee (3ce20), Carole Elizabeth Tucker

Masters Theses

Few excavations or analyses of remains from burial caves have been published. Those that are reported are frequently cited without considering context of the original excavations and analyses. This consideration is important, because previously collected data would be interpreted differently using modern approaches.

This study is a reanalysis of Ausmus Burial Cave (3CE20), Claiborne County, Tennessee. The site was excavated in the 1930's, and the authors' methodology, conclusion, and conjectures reflect this time. Their hypothesis was that the skeletons represented intruders in the area, they were killed in battle, and their bodies were dropped unceremoniously in the pit cave.

This …

Analysis Of Desiccated Human Paleofeces From Big Bone Cave (40vb103), Van Buren County, Tennessee, Charles Thomas Faulkner

Masters Theses

Eight desiccated human feces recovered from Big Bone Cave (40VB103) were analysed for dietary contents, plant pollen, and evidence of endoparasitic infection. Radiocarbon dated materials from the cave indicated that it was a locus of human activity 2220 +/- 135 years ago. The dietary contents were primarily composed of three domesticated plant species: Iva annua, Chenopodium berlandieri ssp. jonesianum, and Helianthus annuus. Palynological evidence indicated that the primary focus of cave utilization occured during the spring months of the year. Endoparasitic species infecting the population using the cave were: Enterobius vermicularis, Ascaris lumbricoides, Giardia intestinalis, and an Ancylostomoid species tenatively identified …

Association Of Nematodes And Dogwood Cankers, Louann H. Self Dec 1989

Association Of Nematodes And Dogwood Cankers, Louann H. Self

Masters Theses

Dogwood canker is a serious production problem of unknown cause. From May 1985 through April 1989, cankers from 290 flowering dogwood trees in fifteen separate nurseries were sampled for nematodes. Seventy—three percent (213) of the cankers were found to contain nematodes. Panagrolaimus rigidus and Aphelenchoides spp. were reared in the laboratory on antibiotic media with Glomerella cingulata as a food source, and panagrplajimus riaidus was reared on water agar with bacteria as a food source. Repeated attempts to culture Aphelenchoides sp. on dogwood callus tissue were unsuccessful. When dogwood trees were inoculated with one or a mixture of Aphelenchoides spp. …

An Empirical Examination Of Hispanic-Americans In A University Setting And The Influences On Their Attitudes Towards Assimilation, Ramon Rodriguez

Masters Theses

Recent literature on Hispanic-Americans has determined that Hispanics are the fastest-growing minority in the United States. Both the high rates of immigration and a high birth rate mean it is only a matter of time before Hispanics will form an extensively large population. Hispanics, however, generally remain unassimilated. This study focuses on the influences on the attitudes towards assimilation of Hispanic-Americans in a university setting.

Survey methods were utilized to gather data from a sample of 100 individuals at Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, Michigan. A survey return rate of 57% was obtained from Hispanic students questioned. The data showed that …

The Role Of Socialization In The Process Of Political Life: An Analysis Of Gender Roles In Elementary School Textbooks On Taiwan, Chien-Hong Lee Dec 1989

The Role Of Socialization In The Process Of Political Life: An Analysis Of Gender Roles In Elementary School Textbooks On Taiwan, Chien-Hong Lee

Masters Theses

This thesis contains both theoretical and applied research. In the theoretical part, political socialization is the main theme to be studied; and an incorporated model is designed to examine how political socialization can be viewed in the process of political life. In the applied part, three sets of elementary school textbooks have been examined and we have found that those textbooks contain clear sex-typed images of adult behavior; and male characters are emphasized more than female characters, which might contribute to the understanding why women are rarely seen in any positions of power in any realm on Taiwan.

No significant difference was found between males and females on the combined analogy tasks. A significant difference was found for modality, indicating that the three sets of analogies were different in difficulty. The grade-by-modality interaction also was found to be significant, …

An Investigation Of Pitch Perturbation And Vocal Intensity Characteristics Of Stutterers And Nonstutterers, Carmen M. Bamberg Dec 1989

An Investigation Of Pitch Perturbation And Vocal Intensity Characteristics Of Stutterers And Nonstutterers, Carmen M. Bamberg

Masters Theses

Pitch and amplitude perturbation values were compared for nine adult stutterers and nine adult nonstutterers. Each subject produced ten sustained phonations of the vowels /a/ and /i/. An automatic pitch-synchronous autocorrelation fundamental frequency tracker was used to extract period and amplitude measures.

Findings revealed that: (a) stutterers had significantly more vocal shimmer than nonstutterers (p = .01), (b) F-ratios for percent jitter between groups approached (p = .07) but did not reach significance, and (c) the vowel /a/ was produced with higher levels of jitter and shimmer than the vowel /i/. Results support the notion that instability of the …

The Effects Of Added Purpose On Fine Motor Performance In Learning Disabled Children, Sarah Lynn Austin Dec 1989

The Effects Of Added Purpose On Fine Motor Performance In Learning Disabled Children, Sarah Lynn Austin

Masters Theses

The idea that occupations which offer added levels of purpose elicit a high quality of performance is widely accepted within occupational therapy. In this experiment involving fine motor performance, fifty-three learning disabled children were randomly assigned to two groups. It was hypothesized that children cutting out a circle, presented as a wheel which would complete a paper truck, would cut more accurately than those who cut out the same circle without the suggestion of it being used as a wheel. Accuracy was assessed by measuring the area of the children's cutting errors. The experimental design included the use of a …

Calculation Of Electron Scattering For 4He In A Continuum Shell Model, Ming Yu Dec 1989

Calculation Of Electron Scattering For 4He In A Continuum Shell Model, Ming Yu

Masters Theses

Calculations for the electroexcitation of the 4He, O+ state have been performed within the context of recoil corrected continuum shell model. Approximations previously employed for inelastic scattering with the recoil corrected continuum shell model are eliminated in the work. The O+ state exhausts only 10% of the energy weighted sum rule and previous shell model calculations for the excitation of this state produce about ten times too much strength. This difficulty is alleviated by the use translationally invariant wave functions and the application of continuum boundary conditions for this particle unbound state. The structure of the O+ state is …

Fourteen randomly assigned subjects in sub-groups of four …

Leisure Satisfaction Of Alcoholics And Cocaine Addicts, Tamera F. Stanback Dec 1989

Leisure Satisfaction Of Alcoholics And Cocaine Addicts, Tamera F. Stanback

Masters Theses

A role for occupational therapists is to help substance abuse clients achieve a healthy balance across occupational performance areas, including leisure. The literature suggests that alcoholics have deficits in leisure, but cocaine addicts have not yet been studied systematically in terms of leisure. This study compared twenty alcoholics from two Midwestern in-patient treatments centers to fourteen unmatched cocaine addicts at the same centers in terms of their leisure satisfaction. Then, nine male subjects from each group were matched in terms of age and family status, and t-test comparisons were made once again. The Leisure Satisfaction Scale was used as a …

Site-Directed Mutagenesis Of The Putative Processing Site Of Recombinant Human Immunodeficiency Virus Reverse Transcriptase, Susan M. Poppe Dec 1989

Site-Directed Mutagenesis Of The Putative Processing Site Of Recombinant Human Immunodeficiency Virus Reverse Transcriptase, Susan M. Poppe

Masters Theses

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is the etiological agent of the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). This retrovirus, encodes a RNA dependent DNA polymerase, reverse transcriptase (RT), which is essential to virus replication. Biochemical analysis indicated that RT is composed of 2 polypeptides of 66,000 and 51,000 daltons (p66 and p51) which combine to form a heterodimer. This heterodimer is thought to arise from the post-translational processing where p66 is made and either autocatalytic or proteolytic cleavage events result in a heterogeneous p66/p51. Site-directed mutagenesis was used at the proposed processing site to probe HIV-RT processing.

Three prokaryotic expression vectors …

Design And Testing Of Devices To Prevent Horizontal Tail Stall Of The Ball-Bartoe Jetwing Research Aircraft, Mark A. Mcbride Dec 1989

Design And Testing Of Devices To Prevent Horizontal Tail Stall Of The Ball-Bartoe Jetwing Research Aircraft, Mark A. Mcbride

Masters Theses

Since its inception, the Ball-Bartoe Jetwing Research Aircraft has been plagued with the problems of horizontal tail stall and static longitudinal instability. The tail stall problem is primarily due to the large downwash at the tail due to the Jetwing's Upper Surface Blowing concept of propulsive lift, and due to the thin, symmetric NACA 0008 airfoil section used for the aircraft 's horizontal tail. These characteristics also contribute to the instability of the Jetwing, as do the aircraft's center of gravity and low tail volume coefficient.

Several possible aircraft modifications were examined to determine if they alleviated the tail stall …

The Efficacy Of Phenolic Compounds And Lactoferrin Against Listeria Monocytogenes In A Model Milk System, Kimberli Dale Payne

Masters Theses

Listeria monocytogenes has been recognized as a human and animal pathogen for over 60 years. Found throughout the environment, this gram-positive bacilli has been isolated from a wide variety of materials, such as soil, water, vegetation, and also sewage (Botzler et al., 1974; Watkins and Sleath, 1981). Even though listeriosis only affects a small portion of the population, the illness still has a high mortality rate, especially among newborns, elderly, and those persons who are immunosuppressed. Symptoms of listeriosis include septicemia, meningitis, meningo-encephalitis, endocarditis, an infectious mononucleosis-like syndrome, and abortions (Gray and Killinger, 1966).

The first confirmed food-borne listeriosis outbreak …

Discerning Empirical Relationships Between The Natural Environment And Prehistoric Site Location: An Example From The Watts Bar Reservoir, East Tennessee, Kenneth Paul Cannon

Masters Theses

The Watts Bar Reservoir study area is an artificially defined region of 13,815 hectares, demarcated by the resevoir boundary of the Tennessee Valley Authority. Following completion of the Watts Bar Dam in 1942, the reservoir impounded 95 river miles of the main Tennessee River, in addition to portions of the Clinch, Emory and Piney rivers, as well as several smaller tributaries. Since the mid-nineteenth century archaelolgical investigations have been conducted in the region. However, the sporadic nature of these research endeavors has created a somewhat fragmented picture of the regions prehistory.

Following Smith's (1978b) model of the linear bandinog of …

"What Injures Royalty" Surnames, Inbreeding, And Genetic Structure In Sevier County, Tennessee: 1856-1905, Joseph C. Lewelling Dec 1989

"What Injures Royalty" Surnames, Inbreeding, And Genetic Structure In Sevier County, Tennessee: 1856-1905, Joseph C. Lewelling

Masters Theses

Inbreeding in Southern Appalachia has been a topic of discourse for both local color writers and academicians since the late 19th century, but only a few researchers have aspired to measure inbreeding or describe the genetic structure of Appalachian populations. This study attempts to assess the genetic structure in one small section of Appalachia--Sevier County, Tennessee.

Because surnames, like alleles, are inherited from a parent, their distribution on a population can give clues about the genetic structure of that population--including the degree of inbreeding. Census and marriage records from 1856-1905 were examined using several methods of surname analysis, and estimates …
