An Analytical Study Of Twentieth-Century Cadential Techniques, Rhenda Ronfeldt Pease Dec 1978

An Analytical Study Of Twentieth-Century Cadential Techniques, Rhenda Ronfeldt Pease

Masters Theses

The purpose of this paper is to devise a codification of twentieth-century cadential techniques used by some of the major representative composers. It is because Debussy had such a profound impact upon twentieth-century music -·because of his innovations and influences upon this century's composition - that he is included in this paper. His music will serve as the beginning step away from traditional cadence procedures. Twentieth century compositions which are non-tonal and basically tonal will be studied for their non-traditional cadential procedures. Traditional procedures refer to those classical clichés which one expects to hear at cadence points, such as: IV-V-I; …

A Multivariate Analysis Of Palatal Measurements In Four Populations, David M. Glassman

Masters Theses

This study presents a multivariate analysis based on sets of twenty-six palatal measurements from males and females of three racial groups. The analysis examines the occurrence and degree of inter- and intrapopulational relationships. Morphological interpretations are provided whenever possible for the multivariate functions and factors identified. Additionally, discriminant functions from which individuals may be classified into their proper racial and sexual group are calculated and their degree of accuracy discussed.

The data for this investigation were obtained from two skeletal collections. Representatives of Negro and White populations were provided from the Terry Collection housed at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural …

The Ducks Nest Site: A Small Mississippian Site In Warren County, Tennessee, Gerald Wesley Kline Dec 1978

The Ducks Nest Site: A Small Mississippian Site In Warren County, Tennessee, Gerald Wesley Kline

Masters Theses

Archaeological investigations conducted at the Ducks Nest site (40WR4), situated on a ridge in the Barren Fork drainage in the Eastern Highland Rim of Middle Tennessee, resulted in the excavation of a small Mississippian component consisting of two superimposed wall trench structures and six features. These cultural remains and the artifacts and ecofacts recovered in association are described and discussed. It is concluded that the Ducks Nest site was occupied on a year round basis over a limited number of years during the first half of the twelfth century A.D. by a small social group that was trophically self-sufficient.

The Mississippian Component At The Eoff I Site, Normandy Reservoir, Coffee County, Tennessee, Lloyd Norris Chapman Dec 1978

The Mississippian Component At The Eoff I Site, Normandy Reservoir, Coffee County, Tennessee, Lloyd Norris Chapman

Masters Theses

Analysis of the Mississippian component features from the Eoff I site in the Normandy Reservoir, upper Duck River, Coffee County, Tennessee, has indicated that the component represents an Early ,Mississippian Banks phase occupation dating from between A.D. 1068 and A.D. 1170. The spatial distribution of features at the site along with the artifactual content of these features suggests that a major cluster of features was placed in consistent arrangement with each of two semisubterranean structures. A storage zone is possibly indicated by a cluster of features with morphological characteristics usually associated with storage facilities and also by the significantly larger …

A Study Of Crop Income Fluctuations For Farm Plans Developed To Meet Specified Soil Erosion Loss Levels On Four West Tennessee Farms, John M. Zinn

Masters Theses

Four West Tennessee upland row crop farms were selected as representative of those in the area. Soil losses were estimated for the farmers' current soil management system using the Universal Soil Loss Predicting Equation. The returns to land and management generated by the farmers' current soil management system were estimated using yield data and crop budgets published in University of Tennessee Agricultural Experiment Station Bulletins. A set of fifteen cropping systems and four soil management practices were used to develop soil management plans to hold soil losses at approximately 5 ton/acre/year, 10 ton/acre/year and greater than or equal to 20 …

Migration, Distribution And Breeding Of American Woodcock, Thomas H. Roberts Dec 1978

Migration, Distribution And Breeding Of American Woodcock, Thomas H. Roberts

Masters Theses

Woodcock are widely distributed over Tennessee, but are most common during fall and spring in the Great Valley, Central Basin, and throughout western Tennessee. Harvest records indicate that peak fall migration occurs in mid-November. In 1977 and 1978, spring migration began during mid-February, and ended during mid-March. Peak migration occurred in late February or early March, but this chronology may not be representative of normal years. Testes lengths averaged 9.2 mm, indicating that male woodcock are in breeding condition by mid-February. Follicle development suggested that 44 percent of the females collected in February 1977 and 52 percent of the females …

Social Interaction In Juvenile Channel Catfish, Lynda Lee Roys Dec 1978

Social Interaction In Juvenile Channel Catfish, Lynda Lee Roys

Masters Theses

Social interactions between 11 pairs of channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) were observed and discrete behavioral units were described and analyzed. Dominant fish engaged regularly in aggressive activities and never in submissive activities, whereas subordinate fish were observed in submissive activities on a regular basis and rarely in those that were aggressive. Activity levels were significantly higher in dominant fish. There was no significant difference in activity levels between pairs equal and unequal in size. A factor analysis indicated three motivational systems underlying the social behavior in juveniles and two behaviors, which appeared as displacement activities, were functioning in agonistic encounters. …

Masters Theses

Introduction

Orientation

In A History of American Archaeology Willey and Sabloff (1974) outline the development of archaeological method and theory in the Western Hemisphere. The authors defined 5 periods through which they traced advances in archaeology from the time Europe first discovered the New World. Each other these periods is characterized by certain attitudes and orientations toward archaeological data. Old ideas changed as new information, new tools of discovery, and new ways of interpretation and explanation transformed archaeology into what it is today.

Archaeologists are now in the Explanatory Period (Willey and Sabloff 1974:178). This period's theoretical orientation can be …

The clergymen of a community are apt to be the first professionals of that community to be consulted when the need for help is felt.

The Influence Of Food On Induction Of Males In Daphnia Pulex, Paul Henry Schreuder Dec 1978

The Influence Of Food On Induction Of Males In Daphnia Pulex, Paul Henry Schreuder

Masters Theses

Introduction

Daphnia pulex Leydig (Crustacea, Cladocera) is a common component of the zooplankton of freshwater lakes and ponds. Its importance in the aquatic trophic structure as food for small fish has long been recognized.

Typical populations of daphnia consist almost exclusively of females. Under favorable conditions this situation is perpetuated by parthenogenetic reproduction. Eggs produced in this manner are referred to as parthenogenetic or summer eggs. When stressed by falling temperatures, drought, overpopulation, or starvation, populations shift to sexual.reproduction. Parthenogenetic eggs are produced which develop into males. Other eggs known as ephippial or winter eggs are also produced, which after …
