A Founder Held 'Hostage' : The Image Of Thomas Jefferson In The Civil Rights Movement, 1954-1968, Robert Glenn Parkinson

Masters Theses

This thesis examines the use of Thomas Jefferson's image throughout the South's struggle over civil rights. Looking at the fourteen years that followed the Supreme Court's Brown decision, I have investigated how Southern white supporters of segregation and black civil rights activists manipulated and invoked the image of Jefferson to support their specific agendas. It is my argument that the roots of the late 1960s change in how historians interpreted Jefferson are based in the popular debate over his image that raged because of the civil rights movement.

The segregationists' campaign to "capture" the heroic image of Jefferson - memorialized …

Laser Lap Welding Of 80y90t Steel With Plasma Arc Augmentation, Glendon Tyree Dec 1998

Laser Lap Welding Of 80y90t Steel With Plasma Arc Augmentation, Glendon Tyree

Masters Theses

An experiment is carried out on 80Y 90T steel, a high strength low alloy steel, that is used in lightweight autobody components. Using a CO2 laser, it is shown that Plasma Assisted Laser Welding (PALW) can provide increased fusion zone width, when compared to conventional CO2 welding, even in the presence of poor part fit-up. The negative effects of material gap, on PALW and laser only welds, are explained and the methods are compared. The use of plasma arc augmentation to increase the tolerance to gap of a laser welding system is shown. The influence of the plasma …

Problems involved in writing for instrument and tape will be discussed, including different methods …

Political Culture And Propaganda : A Comparison Of The Films Kolberg And Bataan, Sandra Ransier Smith Dec 1998

Political Culture And Propaganda : A Comparison Of The Films Kolberg And Bataan, Sandra Ransier Smith

Masters Theses

Film propaganda in Hitler's Germany has a notorious reputation, though it remains one of the least understood genres in film history. We can partially demystify the sinister aura surrounding Nazi propaganda by comparing it with films from other countries. This thesis compares the Nazi film Kolberg with the Hollywood film Bataan, and finds that both have two overarching aims in common: 1) to depict for the audience who they are as a people, and 2) to convince the audience to support/fight in the war. Chapter One examines the term "propaganda" and also places the film industries of Germany and America …

Dissipation Of Nicosulfuron And Rimsulfuron In Surface Soil, Cheryl Anne Ashburn Dec 1998

Dissipation Of Nicosulfuron And Rimsulfuron In Surface Soil, Cheryl Anne Ashburn

Masters Theses

Many factors influencing herbicide dissipation have been studied; however, the effect of the presence of one herbicide on another herbicide's dissipation rate has not been extensively investigated. Field studies were established in 1997 and 1998 on a Sequatchie silt loam in Knoxville, TN. Treatments applied to tilled, bare ground included nicosulfuron (0.046 kg ai ha-1), rimsulfuron (0.046 kg ai ha-1), nicosulfuron (0.046 kg ai ha-1) + rimsulfuron (0.046 kg ai ha-1), and an untreated control. Samples (0-8 cm) were collected from 0 to 31 days after treatment (DAT) in 1997 and 1998. …

Study Of Second-Order Floating-Point Low Roundoff Noise Iir Filter Implementation In Fpga, Bo Su Dec 1998

Study Of Second-Order Floating-Point Low Roundoff Noise Iir Filter Implementation In Fpga, Bo Su

Masters Theses

In this study, the implementation of second-order floating-point IIR filters by FPGAs was investigated. A small word length floating-point representation was chosen to keep the roundoff noise below the input quantization error while also keeping the logic resources required as low as possible. The state-space and direct form structures were compared; the state-space structure was chosen because of its low roundoff noise at the filter output.

A bit-parallel floating-point multiplier used especially for filter design was developed on the base of a megafunction of Altera Company. A bit-serial floating-point multiplier was designed to reduce the logic cells. The logic resources …

Phylogenic Reconstruction In Eupatorium (Asteraceae: Eupatorieae) Using Its Dna Sequences, Gregory John Schmidt Dec 1998

Phylogenic Reconstruction In Eupatorium (Asteraceae: Eupatorieae) Using Its Dna Sequences, Gregory John Schmidt

Masters Theses

Eupatorium has received various levels of delimitation and there is still no consensus on its circumscription. It has been considered to be a heterogeneous genus of nearly 1000 species and encompassing half of the mainly Neotropical tribe Eupatorieae. In contrast, a recent circumscription (King and Robinson, 1987) restricts the genus to 42 species which follow an "Arcto-Tertiary" geographical distributional pattern (mostly E. North America, Europe, and E. Asia) that differs from with the Neotropical distribution for the rest of the tribe. Although there is little argument that the species of Eupatorium (sensu King and Robinson, 1987) fall into four …

The Effect Of T-2 Mycotoxin On Adult Bobwhite Quail : (Colineus Virginianus), David Brian Kersten Dec 1998

The Effect Of T-2 Mycotoxin On Adult Bobwhite Quail : (Colineus Virginianus), David Brian Kersten

Masters Theses

Four experiments were conducted to assess mortality rate, hematopoietic, and histological changes associated with exposure to T-2 mycotoxin. In Experiment 1, adult bobwhite quail were orally dosed with T-2 toxin to determine the acute lethal dose that resulted in 50% mortality of the affected population. The acute one time lethal dosage of T-2 toxin that resulted in 50% mortality was determined to be 14.7 milligrams of T-2 toxin per kilogram of body weight (BW).

A second experiment was performed to compare the effects of intermittent vs. chronic exposure to T-2 toxin on peripheral blood leukocyte populations. Intermittent exposure to T-2 …

Methane Emissions Of Beef Cattle Grazing Tall Fescue Pastures, Mitchell Adam Zuckerman Dec 1998

Methane Emissions Of Beef Cattle Grazing Tall Fescue Pastures, Mitchell Adam Zuckerman

Masters Theses

Methane (CH4;) produced by fermentation in cattle rumens is of interest because it represents an energetic inefficiency of fermentation and because of the role CH4; is suspected of playing in global warming scenarios. Tall fescue {Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) is an important forage in the eastern United States. The toxic syndrome associated with infection by the endophytic fungus Neotyphodium coenophialum (Morgan-Jones & Gams) Glenn, Bacon & Hanlin comb. nov. (E+), can be mitigated with management strategies which improve the forage quality of E+ tall fescue pastures. The sulfur hexafluoride (SF6;) tracer technique was used to …

Influence Of Vertical Mulching And Irrigation On The Water Status And Growth Of Urban Red Maple (Acer Rubrum), Joel Franklin Keebler Dec 1998

Influence Of Vertical Mulching And Irrigation On The Water Status And Growth Of Urban Red Maple (Acer Rubrum), Joel Franklin Keebler

Masters Theses

Mulching has long been recognized as a treatment to improve the health and vigor of cultivated plants. In recent years, vertical mulching has been much discussed although, to date, there has been little research. Vertical mulching involves the removal of soil and its replacement with an organic amendment. In urban forestry, vertical mulching might be used to ameliorate difficult cultural conditions (especially soil compaction). I tested vertical mulching (radial trenching) on red maple (Acer rubrum) and compared it against surface mulching and no mulch. The study trees represented two cultivars ('Franksred' and 'October Glory'), and were established and growing near …

Classification Of Human Chromosomes In Context Using Constrained Markov Networks And Bayesian Probability, Corey D. Ramey Dec 1998

Classification Of Human Chromosomes In Context Using Constrained Markov Networks And Bayesian Probability, Corey D. Ramey

Masters Theses

This thesis presents a system for the classification for human chromosomes in cell context, using constrained Markov networks and Bayesian probability. The system presupposes that the networks already exist, the chromosomes have been classified in isolation, a normal cell is analyzed such that there are no missing or extra chromosomes, and the sex chromosomes are excluded. Statistical methods, alignment probabilities from constrained Markov networks, and information when considering the chromosomes as isolated objects are used to classify chromosomes in cell-context.

For classification in cell-context, classification accuracy is 100% until the confusion matrix is changed. Since the channel model is the …
