The purpose of this experiment was to test the effects on per-formance, economy of gain and carcass quality of slaughter heifers when grown and fattened on a urea-limestone treated corn-silage ration in which the daily crude protein intake per head was 1=7 to 1,8, 1.9 to 2.0 and 2.1 to 2.2 lbs, and to test for any difference between cotton seed meal and urea as an additional supplemental source. In addition to corn silage ad libitum each animal received 6.0 lbs of concentrate per day during a 140-day roughage phase to provide three different levels of protein. Ration 1 consisted …

This research project was designed to determine the effects of long periods of storage at two temperatures on the composition and quality of canned bell peppers (Capsicum annuum L.)-

One lot each of canned red and canned green bell peppers were obtained at the beginning of the 1970 packing season. Two similar lots were obtained at the beginning of the 1971 packing season. Each of these lots were divided into two storage groups. One group was stored at 75°F, and the other group was stored at 100°.

Data were collected from all seventh, eighth, and ninth grade boys and girls in Bledsoe County, Tennessee who were present on the day the inter-views were conducted in each school. A total of 289 interview schedules were used in the analysis. Data were secured by group inter-views from 237 Home Demonstration Club members, representing 24 clubs, who were present at their regularly scheduled club meetings. The Soil Bank plantations in nine east Tennessee counties were investigated to determine current status, survival and growth, and landowner attitudes. The attitudes included reasons for participating in the Program and benefits considered worthwhile. An economic evaluation was also made of some of the forestry alternatives currently open to land owners .

A 62 percent mail return revealed that only 11 percent of the tree plantation acreage had been cut. Of the acreage cut, land use changed to 30 percent pasture, 19 percent crops, and 40 percent not in use. Farming was the principal occupation of 41 percent of the …

Feed intake and production data on 226 first lactation Jerseys fed either an all forage or a forage plus grain ration were analyzed to determine the variation in gross efficiency during portions of the lactation, and to evaluate the association among several measures of economic efficiency.

Gross feed efficiency (FCM/TENE) was highest for cows on the all forage ration, but showed a steady decline throughout the lactation for cows on both rations. Maximum gross efficiency was attained during the first lactation period (1-70 days), and the most rapid decline in gross efficiency occurred from the first to the second period …

Great Northern, Navy, Light Red Kidney, and Pinto varieties of beans were used to study the effect of moisture modification on hydration, texture, and "butterflying" of dried beans for processing. Pinto and Light Red Kidney varieties were used to study the effect of hydration in solutions of amylase, cellulase, and pectinase enzymes on water absorption and texture of dried beans. Moisture absorption by dried beans during conditioning and soaking was directly related to intial moisture content. By exposure to saturated humidity for 48 hours, the impermeability of low moisture beans was reversed. Firmness of soaked beans was found to be …

The purpose of this study was to determine net returns that could be earned by labor and management on part-time farms in West Tennessee. Alternative part-time farm situations used in the study were chosen as representative of the Brown Soil and Delta Areas of Tennessee. Myoglobin Content And Color Of Raw Pork Loin Roasts As Affected By Freezing At Two Rates, Jane Shellabarger Nocito

Longissimus dorsi and psoas major muscles from fresh and frozen paired pork loin roasts were evaluated for myoglobin content and color reflectance. One of each paired roast was analyzed fresh and the other analyzed after freezing and thawing. Myoglobin in the thaw drip from frozen roasts was measured, also. Two freezing rates were tested: fast freezing in an air blast freezer at -27° to -29°C and slow freezing in a home freezer at -18°C. Roasts were stored for 28 days before thawing.

Myoglobin in the longissimus dorsi was significantly (P < 0.001) lower than in psoas major muscle. Less myoglobin (P < 0.05) was found in fresh than frozen thawed roasts; but there was no difference (P > 0.05) in myoglobin content associated with freezing rate. Apparently, myoglobin …

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effect of feeding male, weanling rats diets which were deficient in both vitamin A and iron on hematologic parameters.

The hematologic parameters which were measured were hemoglobin concentration, hematocrit values, red blood cell counts and cellular morphology of the blood smears as well as the level of iron stored in the liver.

In the first experiment, it was found that rats with iron and vitamin A deficiency, not only had higher hemoglobin and hematocrit values as well as higher red blood cell counts. They also had higher levels of iron in …

This study was conducted in Knox County, Tennessee for the purpose of determining selected characteristics of beef producers and their farms. The study was based on a survey-type interview and reflects information for developing a county plan of action. The producers were interviewed and then classified in low, medium and high groups, depending on the number of pounds of beef sold per cow in 1970. The objectives of this study were to determine: (1) the effects of weather upon toxicity of grains treated with zinc phosphide, (2) the acceptance by prairie voles of weathered bait, (3) the LD50 of zinc phosphide on selected rodent species, and (4) the potential hazard of secondary poisoning to predators fed prey poisoned with zinc phosphide.

Tests conducted at the University of Tennessee were designed to compare the control results of the corn earworm by three different pathogens and a standard chemical insecticide. Also, some methods of application were tested. The pathogens tested were a bacterium, Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner, a nuclear polyhedrosis virus specific for Heliothis zea, and the nematode, DD-136.

The treatments were applied under field conditions directly to the ears of corn.

The results indicated that general effectiveness is based on how accessible the pathogens are to the earworm larvae. Best control was accomplished by a treatment using a virus-nematode combination. That treatment …

Competitive protein binding (CPB) assay for progesterone and radioimmunoassay (RIA) for estrogen were used to evaluate the effects of various blood handling techniques from the time of collection to assay on the stability of progesterone and estrogen concentrations in blood. Eight 40 ml samples were collected consecutively in polycarbonate centrifuge tubes from the jugular veins of eight cows and subjected to various treatments. Six loblolly pine stands in East Tennessee were surveyed for fungi possibly mycorrhizal with loblolly pine. Fifty-three species of fungi Were collected and identified including Boletus brevipes, Boletus luteus, Cenococcum graniforme, Laccaria laccata, and Pisolithius tinctorius which have previously been shown to be mycorrhizal with loblolly pine. Pure cultures of twelve of the collected species were obtained and tested in synthetic culture with loblolly pine. Agaricus placomyces, Amanita rubescens, Amanita yerna, and Boletus bicolor entered into mycorrhizal relationships with loblolly pine.

An investigation of Cambarus dubius and Cambarus carolinus was made in Tennessee to evaluate morphological Variation found in populations of these species and to determine aspects of life history and ecology. Taxonomic position and history of C. carolinus and C. dubius was reviewed and discussed. Three clines or possible subspecies in C. dubius were indicated in Tennessee based on both qualitative and quantitative evidence including: width and length of areola, shape and size of chelae, rostrum, central projection, mesial process, and color.

Unequal populations of the various conformers in such molecules are normally accepted as the cause of nonequivalence, but nuclei which are stereochemically nonequivalent are not necessarily magnetically nonequivalent. This nonequivalence has been demonstrated for molecules of the type ABDC8CHR1R2, where R + H, F, and Me. The objective of this study was to delineate dietary patterns of bobwhite quail on the Ames Plantation with respect to seasonal variation in food selection and feeding preferences of different age and sex groups. Preliminary field studies began in July, 1966, while quail collections began in December, 1966.

Each process was conducted in both still and rotating retorts. Process A was designed to approximate a conventional process using an initial temperature (IT) of 150°F, a retort temperature (RT) of 248°F, and a holding time (BB) of 20 minutes.
