The way we communicate has a direct impact on our impressions of the world this thesis argues that the various forms of abstraction represented by language and the focus on objectivity in development of explicit knowledge have created the impression that the world of inanimate things is a static one. Through both text and furniture objects, this thesis proposes a metaphoric re-languaging of the way we understand our objects, from nouns to verbs as a means to enhance our interactions with them and through them with ourselves and others.

Young men are dying in the custody of law enforcement in the United States in rates that are unappropriated to the population. Many of these men are often unarmed. This thesis proposes the creation of an Enrichment Center where a young man, between the ages of eight years to twenty years old, will gain help with homework, guidance through daily life challenges and personal mentorship as they head into the workforce.

Clay is a binary material. It is soft and malleable and yet becomes as hard as rock when subjected to immense heat. Its responsiveness to manipulation makes it well suited to recording touch in landscapes of surface. Its versatility makes it the ideal material for expressing other types of antipodal concepts: dark and light, banal and profound, temporary and durable. The sculptural objects in this body of work represent many of these contrasts through an investigation of various historical concepts within a broad definition of landscape art. This thesis aims to solve inland urban flooding in residential communities of southwestern Washington D.C. by refining the current urban surface there.

By learning from the natural mountainous surface of the area, this study proposes a plan to add a new layer of urban surface above the original highly developed ground, in order to collect, recycle clean rainwater, and reduce the stress on the urban sewer system. The conclusion of the design strategies rebuilds a sustainable urban infrastructure system for the decaying urban residential area, with influence from the disciplines of both landscape and architecture.
