A Tunnel Diode Parametric Down Converter, Leland Lovell Long Jan 1962

A Tunnel Diode Parametric Down Converter, Leland Lovell Long

Masters Theses

"The problem, as presented, is to derive analytical expressions for the conversion gain, bandwidth, and noise figure of a self excited tunnel diode converter and to verify, if possible, the validity of these express- ions by building such a converter. These analytical results are presented and discussed. The converter circuit is shown along with the resulting intermediate frequency output. Gain and bandwidth measurements are also given. It is concluded that the self excited converter could very definitely be of value as a low noise pre-amplifying device in the ultra-high frequency and microwave frequency ranges"--Abstract, page ii.

Circular Arch Analysis, Aylmer Pao-Sheng Cheng Jan 1962

Circular Arch Analysis, Aylmer Pao-Sheng Cheng

Masters Theses

"This work presents an analysis of a two-hinged circular arch by both the elastic theory and the deflection theory. The basic assumption made in this analysis was that the moment of inertia of the arch rib and the normal force vary as the secant of the angle with respect to the crown. The increase of maximum moment as found by the deflection theory was in the range of 30%"--Abstract, page 2.

A Survey Of The Influence Of Selected Sulfides On The Thermal Decomposition Rate Of Zinc Sulfate, L. G. Twidwell Jan 1962

A Survey Of The Influence Of Selected Sulfides On The Thermal Decomposition Rate Of Zinc Sulfate, L. G. Twidwell

Masters Theses

"The influence which ZnS, CdS, Cu2S, PbS, and FeS has on the thermal decomposition rate of ZnSO4 was studied by measuring the SO2 gas evolved per unit of time for various ZnSO4-MeS mixtures at 600°C, and analyzing the solid phases by means of X-ray diffraction patterns.

The SO2 gas evolved upon heating the pellets was analyzed as a function of time by absorbing the gas in a solution of distilled water, H2O2, and NaOH, and measuring the time required for the SO2 to neutralize the NaOH. The gas …

Geology Of The Esterbrook Area, Converse And Albany Counties, Wyoming, Michael Nolan Greeley Jan 1962

Geology Of The Esterbrook Area, Converse And Albany Counties, Wyoming, Michael Nolan Greeley

Masters Theses

"The Esterbrook area lies within the Laramie Range in Converse and Albany Counties, Wyoming. Exposures include Precambrian metamorphic and igneous rocks, the Tertiary White River formation, and Quaternary alluvium.

Hornblende schist and mica-quartz schist comprise the Precambrian metamorphic rocks. Foliation planes of these rocks trend northeast and dip steeply to the southeast. Metamorphic rocks of younger age probably lie to the southeast.

A distinctive, Precambrian silicic pluton of biotite-leucogranite with marginal zones of muscovite-leucogranite and alaskite passively intrudes the metamorphic rocks, generally parallel to the foliation trends. Numerous granite pegmatites show a zonal distribution around the pluton and appear to …

Thermal Conductometer For Liquids, Yuan-Kai Chang Jan 1962

Thermal Conductometer For Liquids, Yuan-Kai Chang

Masters Theses

"The published data pertaining to the thermal conductivity of liquids are of such a character that it is very difficult to determine from them the correct value, or the temperature coefficient for any liquid.

Most of the published values of thermal conductivity for liquids are evaluated at one particular temperature. It is the purpose of this investigation to design, construct and calibrate a thermal conductometer for liquids over a temperature range of 30°F to 200°F.

Since water and glycerol were the only liquids found by this investigator with published data on their conductivities as a function of temperature, they were …

Investigation And Development Of Ground Water Of Chalone Creek, (Pinnacles National Monument, California), Donald Lee Brown

Masters Theses

"The Pinnacles National Monument is located in San Benito and Monterey Counties about 130 highway miles south of San Francisco, California. Because of unusual patterns in volcanic rocks, the Monument was set aside as a recreation area on January 16, 1908, by President Theodore Roosevelt. It encompasses an area of approximately 12,818 acres.

Water quality and supply problems were experienced at the Monument in the few years prior to 1961. In 1961, a collection trench system was installed to alleviate the water supply condition. A horizontal trench system, 215 feet long and four feet below the dry season water table, …

Experimental Evaluation Of Thermal Strains And Stresses, T. F. Lehnhoff Jan 1962

Experimental Evaluation Of Thermal Strains And Stresses, T. F. Lehnhoff

Masters Theses

"This investigation is the study of a method for the experimental measurement of thermal strains. Using four electric strain gages (two of one type and two of another) the method will yield the normal and shear strains as well as the temperature change in any biaxial stress field. The gage types must be chosen for the range of temperature in which it is desired to measure the thermal stresses. The method described eliminates the need for extra resistors, thermocouples, unrestrained dummy gages at the same temperature as the active gages, special alloy gages for each type of metal and special …

A Study Of Segregation In Cast Aluminum-Uranium Alloys, B. L. Bramfitt Jan 1962

A Study Of Segregation In Cast Aluminum-Uranium Alloys, B. L. Bramfitt

Masters Theses

"This investigation involves a photomicrographic study of the segregation resulting from the eutectic solidification characteristics of aluminum-uranium alloys, ranging from 5 to 30 weight percent uranium. The segregation can occur in either of two manners; the first, due to the gravitational forces acting upon the growing particles which nucleate in the melt and the second, due to the mode and rate of heat transfer through the material. It was found that segregation occurred only as the result of the latter factor due to the small volume of the ingot and the rapid rate of heat transfer. The segregation was measured …

A Study Of The Chemical Kinetics, Activation Energy And Difference Effect On Beryllium Dissolving In Mineral Acids, Daniel Santhamurthi Gnanamuthu Jan 1962

A Study Of The Chemical Kinetics, Activation Energy And Difference Effect On Beryllium Dissolving In Mineral Acids, Daniel Santhamurthi Gnanamuthu

Masters Theses

"The rate of dissolution of polycrystalline beryllium was studied in hydrofluoric, hydrochloric and sulfuric acids. Two samples of beryllium containing different amounts of beryllium oxide were used. The experiments were performed at temperatures ranging from 20 to 50°C, and at various acid concentrations. The kinetics of these heterogeneous processes conformed to a reaction order of approximately one in all the cases. Since the conditions of the surface were complex during dissolution, these might complicate the reaction. This might be due to the oxide layer, which is present as impurity.

The difference effect was determined at various acid concentrations at 25°C …

Variation Of Sensitized Fluorescence With Penetration Depth Of Incident 2537a Radiation, George Grayson Robinson Jan 1962

Variation Of Sensitized Fluorescence With Penetration Depth Of Incident 2537a Radiation, George Grayson Robinson

Masters Theses

"An investigation of the sensitized fluorescence of a thallium and mercury mixture using a variable depth cell and photomultiplier type of detection is discussed. Data are given to indicate the variation of the intensity of the 3519A thallium line as a function of thallium temperature, as a function of mercury temperature, and as a function of cell depth. Explanations of results require the use of generally accepted ideas concerning energy transfer, emission, and absorption."

Gathering Haunch Design Data By Photoelasticity, Richard B. Heagler Jan 1962

Gathering Haunch Design Data By Photoelasticity, Richard B. Heagler

Masters Theses

"The haunching of beams and columns and the haunching of rigid frames is performed by design engineers for the purpose of relieving stress concentrations that might occur at discontinuities in structures. The haunch performs this relieving of stress concentration by increasing the rigidity of the structure at regions of high stress. Usually this design step is one of trial and error; that is, the engineer will select a haunch or method of haunching and then check to see if the result is sufficient for his purpose. This can be a time consuming process and can lead to uneconomical design.

Study Of The Copper-Uranium Deposits At Vilcabamba, Department Of Cuzco, Peru, Oscar Aguilar

Masters Theses

"Uranium has been known in the Vilcabamba district of Cuzco, Peru since 1954. Copper ores of high silver content were worked by the Spaniards during the seventeenth and the early eighteenth centuries, At the beginning of the twentieth century these ores were worked intermittently; during the last fifty years no mining operation has been going on.

The oldest rocks in the thesis area consist of Ordovician phyllites. The presence of Devonian in the area is questionable, but has been recognized 5 km. away from the thesis area. A conglomerate of limited lateral extent of Mississippian age overlies the Devonian (?) …

The Dissolution Of Magnesium In Strong Acids, Baldev K. Bhatia Jan 1962

The Dissolution Of Magnesium In Strong Acids, Baldev K. Bhatia

Masters Theses

"The rapidly growing demand for magnesium and magnesium-base alloys in the manufacture of aircraft has led to a great amount of research into the corrosion characteristics of these materials. The result of such research has been the development of suitable magnesium alloys and protective coatings to retard corrosion.

The standard electrode potential of magnesium lies between -2.35 volts and -2.54 volts at 25⁰C (hydrogen scale). Thus, magnesium lies next to aluminium in the electrochemical series of elements. The atmospheric corrosion of magnesium has been studied under conditions of indoor and outdoor exposure. Under these conditions the initial attack is formation …

Porous Cooling Of A Pile, Tarsem Singh Purewal Jan 1962

Porous Cooling Of A Pile, Tarsem Singh Purewal

Masters Theses

"In this investigation the problem of a limiting case of steady state one dimensional solid-fluid Newtonian heat transfer is examined in which an incompressible non-heat generating coolant fluid is flowing through a heat generating porous plate.

The effect of grain size on the Newtonian heat transfer in the porous plate with various kinds of internal heat generations is determined analytically. The temperature difference between the solid and the coolant fluid through the porous plate is determined. All the previous studies assume that in the porous plate, coolant fluid temperature and solid temperatures are approximately equal. This analysis eliminates this simplifying …

The Removal Of Sub-Structure From Alpha Uranium, Albert E. Bolon Jan 1962

The Removal Of Sub-Structure From Alpha Uranium, Albert E. Bolon

Masters Theses

"The possibility of obtaining larger, perfect single crystals of alpha uranium by a modified strain-anneal method has been investigated. A -196°C tensile deformation was performed on pseudo single crystal rods which had been prepared by the phase transformation method. The specimens were subsequently annealed at 650°C.

It was found that by utilizing pseudo single crystals with a prescribed crystallographic orientation with respect to the tensile axis that recrystallized crystals of comparable size and perfection to those prepared by the grain coarsening method could be produced. Grain coarsening is the presently accepted process for preparing perfect single crystals of alpha uranium. …

Investigation Of Flow Rates Through A Rockfill Dam With An Internal Spillway, Jerry R. Bayless Jan 1962

Investigation Of Flow Rates Through A Rockfill Dam With An Internal Spillway, Jerry R. Bayless

Masters Theses

"Tests were performed on a model of a rockfill dam with an internal spillway for the purpose of developing a method of predicting the flow rate through the dam. The flow rate depends upon the head but is affected by the rock size and the height of the impervious core; there- fore, these factors were varied in the study. A relation for flow rate in terms of head was found for each combination of rock size and core height used and was compared to the general weir equation to find the coefficient of contraction; thus the effect of changing core …
