Oil Field Corrosion, Edwin Harry Barsachs Jan 1951

Oil Field Corrosion, Edwin Harry Barsachs

Masters Theses

"The corrosion of metals in the petroleum industry has become an important engineering problem. The rapid increase during recent years in costs of steel has caused the industry to intensify its efforts to minimize corrosion losses in pipe lines and well casings. An industry-wide research program has resulted in the development of improved methods of controlling corrosion of such equipment.

The purpose of this paper is to assemble and correlate the information concerning the different causes, the detection, and the mitigation of corrosion of metals used in the oil fields of the world. The causes that are presented in this …

The Specific Radioactivity And Ratio Of Hafnium To Zirconium In Ores From Different Continents And The Preliminary Design Of A Process For Producing Hafnium, Arliss V. Martin Jan 1951

The Specific Radioactivity And Ratio Of Hafnium To Zirconium In Ores From Different Continents And The Preliminary Design Of A Process For Producing Hafnium, Arliss V. Martin

Masters Theses

"An investigation of the weight ratio of hafnium to zirconium in ores from widely separated regions of the world was undertaken to extend knowledge on this ratio obtained by modern means and to compare with the results of previous investigators. This type of information is of interest in geochemical considerations and the value of some similar information in the literature has been vitiated by the relatively recent finding that past methods of analysis are not satisfactory. The specific radioactivity of the original ores was determined in an attempt to check the proposition originated by Hevesy and apparently generally held by …

A Method Of Mining The Kumtepe Lignite Deposit Of Turkey, Hilmi Dokuzoglu Jan 1951

A Method Of Mining The Kumtepe Lignite Deposit Of Turkey, Hilmi Dokuzoglu

Masters Theses

"The Agacle lignite deposit, as a potential source of fuel, near Istanbul, Turkey has been used in this study to apply the principles of strip mining operations. The details of the deposit upon which this thesis is predicated will be presented later in this paper.

The fuel requirement of the city of Istanbul with a population of nearly a million is considerably greater then can easily be met. Some of the fuel needs are accommodated by electrical energy by producer gas, by bituminous coal brought from Zonguldak (about 200 miles from the city), by charcoal, and by fuel wood. During …

Integrated Scattering Of Microwaves By Small Metal Spheres, A. L. Merts Jan 1951

Integrated Scattering Of Microwaves By Small Metal Spheres, A. L. Merts

Masters Theses

"When electromagnetic radiation falls upon a material body of any kind, the associated electric field induces periodic oscillations of the electrons of the material synchronous with the incident radiation. The material serves as a secondary source and emits energy in the form of scattered radiation with a frequency equal to that of the incident electromagnetic wave. The polarization and intensity of the scattered radiation are determined by the size, shape, electric constants, and interactions among the scattering elements.

The scattering of electromagnetic waves is an old problem in physics. Such names as Rayleigh, Debye, and Mie have become associated with …

Well Interference In The South Silica Field, Langdon B. Taylor Jan 1951

Well Interference In The South Silica Field, Langdon B. Taylor

Masters Theses

"During World War II the Federal Government restricted oil-field drilling in the United States in order to conserve steel. The wartime regulations required 40-acre spacing in most areas. At the close of the war, the Federal drilling restrictions were lifted, and control of oil-well spacing reverted to the several state regulatory bodies. Each of these state agencies was then confronted with this problem: should 40-acre spacing be continued or should pre-war 10- and 20-acre spacing patterns be re-established?

The regulatory authority in Kansas, the State Corporation Commission, ordered an investigation in January, 1946, for the purpose of developing information upon …

Economic Analysis Of Secondary Distribution Networks, Charles F. Cromer Jan 1951

Economic Analysis Of Secondary Distribution Networks, Charles F. Cromer

Masters Theses

"In the early history of commercial electricity in heavy load density areas, the d.c. Edison Network was developed extensively. As far as reliability is concerned it is exceeded by no system. At the present time it has been developed to the extent of automatic and non-automatic converters, motor-generator sets, booster sets and storage battery reserve capacity.

This type of network is fed from several substations in the area at utilization voltage.

As load densities have increased, the large amounts of copper required, the cost of substation sites and large rotating conversion equipment have made the expansion of the d.c. Network …

Airflow Through Metallic Screening, Norman Bernard Wolk Jan 1951

Airflow Through Metallic Screening, Norman Bernard Wolk

Masters Theses

"The selection of the problem for which this paper offers a solution was made from a list of thesis subjects submitted to Dr. Aaron J. Miles by the United States Air Forces. This suggestion called for the development of a method whereby air flow through woven materials such as metallic screening and woven cloth could be predicted in terms of the pressure drop across the material. The range of the pressure differentials to be investigated was from zero to twenty inches of water.

After some preliminary work it became obvious that an investigation of the air flow through all types …

Bauxite Versus Diaspore Clay In High Alumina (70%) Refractory Brick, Bhikhubhai Mahadeo Sedalia Jan 1951

Bauxite Versus Diaspore Clay In High Alumina (70%) Refractory Brick, Bhikhubhai Mahadeo Sedalia

Masters Theses

"The last twenty five years have seen a remarkable change in the character and types of refractories for furnace construction. Not much more than a few years ago, the production of refractories consisted almost solely of fireclay and silica shapes. A few high alumina bricks were made from Missouri diaspore clays or from bauxite and fire clays. At a later date, although little used, high alumina refractories were available which were made from alumina of a higher degree of purity, by the fusion process. Today refractories covering the entire range of composition from about 98% SiO2 to 99 1/2% …

The Reactions Of The Sodium-, Potassium-, And The Lithium Tungsten Bronzes In The Solid State, Keki Khodadad Irani Jan 1951

The Reactions Of The Sodium-, Potassium-, And The Lithium Tungsten Bronzes In The Solid State, Keki Khodadad Irani

Masters Theses

"The first part of this dissertation has the intention of determining whether MoO3 forms solid solutions with Na-W bronze corresponding to the formula NaWO3(1-x) (MoO3)x and whether the so-called “sodium-molybdenum bronze” exists.

The next part is concerned with the solubility of K-W bronze in Li-W bronze at high temperatures, in a vacuum, and the last part or this work has the intention of studying the solubility of K-W bronze in Na-W bronze at different temperatures.

The interest in this work is of a purely scientific nature rather than of academic interest"--Introduction, page 1.

Square Wave Modulation, Richard Henry Duncan Jan 1951

Square Wave Modulation, Richard Henry Duncan

Masters Theses

"Modulation of a radio frequency carrier can be defined as the variation of some wave parameter such as amplitude, frequency, or phase, in accordance with intelligence to be transmitted. An unmodulated carrier is simply a continuous sine wave and contains no information other than the fact that the transmitter has been turned on. The spectrum of an unmodulated signal consists of a single frequency. Any type of modulation is characterized by the appearance of additional frequencies, known as sidebands. One of the fundamental problems in radio engineering is to reduce the number of sidebands to a minimum and still adequately …

A Study Of Volatility And Desulfurization Of Titanium Disulfide, Sheng-Tai Shih Jan 1951

A Study Of Volatility And Desulfurization Of Titanium Disulfide, Sheng-Tai Shih

Masters Theses

"The application of high vacuum for the promotion of metallurgical reactions is a comparatively new development. During the war the need for high vacuum in producing magnesium by the Pidgeon Process and in certain phases of uranium purification led to the perfection of both equipment and technique for high vacuum operations. These developments helped open the way for the entirely new field of vacuum metallurgy.

The reduction of metal oxides in vacuum has been studied by Dr. Kroll and Dr. Schlechten. They have been able to reduce many metals from their oxides under reduced pressures using carbon as a reducing …

Stress Analysis Of Thin Bedded Mine Roofs Subjected To Evenly Distributed Lateral Load And Supported By Barrier Pillars, Sahap Sakip Aybat Jan 1951

Stress Analysis Of Thin Bedded Mine Roofs Subjected To Evenly Distributed Lateral Load And Supported By Barrier Pillars, Sahap Sakip Aybat

Masters Theses

“Theoretical stress analysis in mine structures begins with the assumption that the structural elements are homogeneous, isotropic and perfectly elastic. It is this writers belief that stresses in a mine roof supported by barrier pillars may be compared to those stresses which may be found in a thin plate supported and restrained in the manner similar to such a mine roof. Therefore the stress and moment equations developed for plates are herein applied to mine roofs of limited thickness.

A thin roof bed which is stressed with evenly distributed lateral load and supported with barrier pillars will be regarded as …

Relationship Of The Overall Transfer Coefficient To The Factor In Ammonia Absorption, Ivan Lee Gray Jan 1951

Relationship Of The Overall Transfer Coefficient To The Factor In Ammonia Absorption, Ivan Lee Gray

Masters Theses

"Gas absorption has an important role in chemical and allied industries. It is used to separate one of a group of constituents from a gas stream. Poisonous or obnoxious gases may be removed from the gaseous waste products of chemical plants by absorbing them in suitable solvents.

Many investigations have been carried out and references too numerous to list have appeared in the literature on the general subject of absorption.

In all of this work one of the usual methods of reporting results has been to express the capacity of a piece of absorption equipment as an overall capacity coefficient …

Photoelastic Investigation Of Filleted Corners In Square Apertures In Flat Plates Subjected To Tension, Raymond Huston Bever Jan 1951

Photoelastic Investigation Of Filleted Corners In Square Apertures In Flat Plates Subjected To Tension, Raymond Huston Bever

Masters Theses

"During recent years many advances have been made in solving engineering problems by mathematical means. While this method of solving problems is invaluable to the engineer, there are times when a rigorous mathematical solution cannot be readily obtained, and the engineer must resort to other methods, some of which are approximate.

This paper attempts to show the application of photoelastic investigation to such a problem. The results of this problem are quantitative, but they show without any doubt that this method of investigation has considerably influenced the modern design of machine parts and helped in many cases to improve construction …

A Study Of An Industrial Waste Produced In The Manufacture Of Titanox, Kurt H. Frank Jan 1951

A Study Of An Industrial Waste Produced In The Manufacture Of Titanox, Kurt H. Frank

Masters Theses

"The problem involved in this thesis is definitely of an industrial nature in that it deals specifically with waste from a plant that is primarily concerned with the manufacture of pigment.

….the plant does have a method of recovering the soluble titanium by returning the overflow from the Dorr thickener to the digestion tanks to dilute (cut) the digestions. However, in the underflow (sewer) there is a tremendous amount of sludge that is sent directly into the nearest stream because of failure to realize something economical to do with it. This sludge contains roughly 30 per cent solids of the …

Recovering Oil From An Unconsolidated Sand By Means Of Combustion, David K. Anderson Jan 1951

Recovering Oil From An Unconsolidated Sand By Means Of Combustion, David K. Anderson

Masters Theses

"For many years, there has been talk expressing great concern about the oil reserves in the United States. Every four or five years, articles are published stating that we are running out of oil and our proved reserves, to date, are only adequate, at our present rate of consumption, for about 20 years. While this is true, it does not leave us with the complete picture. The industry in the past 20 years has never had more than a 20 year reserve. It must be said, however, that it is becoming more difficult with each passing year to find oil …

The Effect Of Temper Carbon Nodule Number On The Physical Properties Of A Malleable Iron, William J. Ruprecht Jan 1951

The Effect Of Temper Carbon Nodule Number On The Physical Properties Of A Malleable Iron, William J. Ruprecht

Masters Theses

"It is known that the number of temper carbon nodules per unit volume of malleable iron has an effect on both the rate of anneal and on the resulting physical properties, but neither have been clearly worked out quantitatively. The purpose of this investigation is to ascertain the effect of temper carbon nodule number on certain of the physical properties of a commercial malleable iron.

Quantitative determinations of the effect of temper carbon nodule number would be essential from a theoretical viewpoint in working out the mechanism of graphtization, and would be useful in commercial practice in showing the most …

The Depression Of Quartz In Sulphide Flotation, William Mcminn Billinghurst Jan 1951

The Depression Of Quartz In Sulphide Flotation, William Mcminn Billinghurst

Masters Theses

"The flotation of sulphide minerals from siliceous and calcareous gangue minerals always gives a concentrate that is contaminated to a greater or lesser degree with the gangue minerals, even though the collectors used do not show any appreciable collecting properties for the gangue minerals when they are treated alone. In an effort to reduce the amount of undesirable gangue mineral floated with the concentrate it is the practice to add arbitrary amounts of various reagents such as quebracho, alkali hydroxides, carbonates, silicates, sulphides, phosphates, fluorides, and sulphuric acid which have been found to be advantageous. The mechanism of depression is …

The Relationship Between The Centrifuge Moisture Equivalent And The Vacuum Moisture Equivalent In Soils, Samuel Payton Halcomb Jan 1951

The Relationship Between The Centrifuge Moisture Equivalent And The Vacuum Moisture Equivalent In Soils, Samuel Payton Halcomb

Masters Theses

"Soil is a material that has been formed through the influence of many different natural agencies. The engineer is not so much interested in how the soil was formed, but he does want to know the characteristics of the soil with respect to its use as a structural material. Therefore, the engineer is primarily interested in the physical properties of soils.

Much progress has been made during the past twenty five years in the study of Soil Mechanics, but even today there is a tendency among engineers to think of soil as just a mixture of clay, sand, silt and …

Mineral Composition In Relation To Particle Size For A Missouri Plastic Fire Clay, John Edward May Jan 1951

Mineral Composition In Relation To Particle Size For A Missouri Plastic Fire Clay, John Edward May

Masters Theses

"From the rather modest beginning of the refractory industry in Missouri prior to the Civil War, the industry has grown to challenge those of other states as the third largest producer of refractory clays and products in the United States. As Roberts (1950) points out, the development of the metallurgical and glass industries increased the demand for high grade refractory materials. A prominent factor in the development of the fire clays of Missouri was the discovery that flint clay could be mixed with the plastic or semi-plastic refractory clays to yield an excellent product. Perhaps the most important reason many …

A Stratigraphic Study Of Fusulinid Foraminifera In The Cherokee Group (Pennsylvanian) Of Western Missouri And Kansas, Ralph Orlansky Jan 1951

A Stratigraphic Study Of Fusulinid Foraminifera In The Cherokee Group (Pennsylvanian) Of Western Missouri And Kansas, Ralph Orlansky

Masters Theses

"Limestones or shaly limestones, from four stratigraphic levels in the Cherokee group (Desmoinesian series) of Missouri and Kansas, contain eight species and two varieties of fusulinid foraminifera, of which four species and two varieties are new, and one ophthalmidiid foraminiferal species (Hemigordius cf. regularis Plummer). The next to highest limestone (cap rock of the Fleming coal) is correlated with the Seahorne limestone of western Illinois, the Stonefort limestone of southern Illinois, and the Munterville limestone of Iowa. Hemigordius regularis, a limestone facies foraminifer apparently marks a correlatable interval in the Ardmore limestone. Descriptions of the fusulinids and the …

Investigation Of The Fundamental Properties Of Rubber-Asphalt Mixtures, Yali Cevat Hasan Jan 1951

Investigation Of The Fundamental Properties Of Rubber-Asphalt Mixtures, Yali Cevat Hasan

Masters Theses

"The writer of this thesis believes that the most important thing next to the original construction cost of a road, is the maintenance cost. It is apparent that the maintenance cost for any given road is directly proportional to the percentage of worn out sections in that road. It is believed that climatic conditions are the very first cause of road failures and that traffic on the road often has a secondary degree of importance in the causing of road surface failures….

It is obvious that extreme heat as well as extreme cold will ruin a road. A heavy traffic …

The Effect Of Inlet Air Temperature On The Efficiency Of A Spark Ignition Engine, John B. Toomey Jr. Jan 1951

The Effect Of Inlet Air Temperature On The Efficiency Of A Spark Ignition Engine, John B. Toomey Jr.

Masters Theses

"The object of this thesis is to determine the effect of inlet air temperature on the efficiency of an internal combustion engine. In most text books the subject is dismissed with mentioning the negative effect of warm air on the maximum output of the engine. This fact is recognized but since most engines are run at maximum output only a small percentage of the time, it would be possible to control the air temperature as the situation demanded. With the assumption that cold air could be used when full power is desired, it was decided to determine the effect of …

An Economy Study Of Vierendeel Trusses, Donald Lee Dean Jan 1951

An Economy Study Of Vierendeel Trusses, Donald Lee Dean

Masters Theses

"Since the introduction of the pin connected steel truss in the United States in 1847 as a truss that could be actually designed, there has been very few basic changes in the truss as a structure. True, web members have been sloped or braced in many different ways to best adapt the truss for the structural materials being used, and over the protests of many , pin connections have almost wholly given way to riveted or arc welded connections, however, the basic idea of using all members as two force members has prevailed. Concern over the existence of bending stresses …

A Correlation Function For Liquid Argon, Walter Graham Jan 1951

A Correlation Function For Liquid Argon, Walter Graham

Masters Theses

"X-ray scattering patterns have given considerable information concerning atomic distributions in matter, both crystalline and amorphous. Work on the diffraction of x-rays by crystals was begun in 1912 by Friedrich, Knipping, and Laue, and much valuable information concerning the arrangement of atoms in crystals has been supplied by this method. Diffraction of x-rays by gases was studied as early as 1911, and work in this field has given information concerning the arrangement of atoms in molecules and electron distribution in atoms. Work on the diffraction of x-rays by liquids was begun by Friedrich who obtained diffraction patterns of Canada Balsam, …

Problems In Theatre Lighting And Pre-Selective Elctronic Lighting Control, Hasan Orhan Aker Jan 1951

Problems In Theatre Lighting And Pre-Selective Elctronic Lighting Control, Hasan Orhan Aker

Masters Theses

"Until the recent years, because of the lack in technical know-how of play producers and on the other hand the limited knowledge of the engineers about stage technique, all the advantages provided by efficient stage lighting could not be exploited. Especially, the different problems encountered from the point of view of lighting control, could not be solved for a long time.

It has been proven from theatres built lately, that the stage lighting designs made without a thorough study of the various stage conditions and requirements lead to a tremendous increase in cost and also inefficient operation of the whole …
