Exploring The Influence Of Urban Watershed Characteristics And Antecedent Climate On In-Stream Pollutant Dynamics, Laurel Elizabeth Christian

Masters Theses

Understanding pollutant fate and transport in urban watersheds is a challenging endeavor, as heterogeneity of land use, precipitation patterns, and pollutant loadings add complexity to the system. As a result, many currently utilized water quality models exhibit poor performance. One main challenge in urban system modeling is the lack of quality data sets for model development, calibration, and testing, resulting in the need for high quality data collection. Although recent studies have begun to investigate pollutant transport in urban watersheds to aid these models, these studies have focused primarily on the end-of-pipe as the point of interest (i.e. prior to …

Live Load Distribution Factors For Horizontally Curved Concrete Box Girder Bridges, Mohammed Zaki Nov 2016

Live Load Distribution Factors For Horizontally Curved Concrete Box Girder Bridges, Mohammed Zaki

Masters Theses

Live load distribution factors are used to determine the live-load moment for bridge girder design when a two dimensional analysis is conducted. A simple, analysis of bridge superstructures are considered to determine live-load factors that can be used to analyze different types of bridges. The distribution of the live load factors distributes the effect of loads transversely across the width of the bridge superstructure by proportioning the design lanes to individual girders through the distribution factors.

This research study consists of the determination of live load distribution factors (LLDFs) in both interior and exterior girders for horizontally curved concrete box …

Particle Mediated Enhanced Mass Transfer Of Diethylhexyl Phthalate: A Pilot Scale System Design, Melissa Buechlein Jan 2016

Particle Mediated Enhanced Mass Transfer Of Diethylhexyl Phthalate: A Pilot Scale System Design, Melissa Buechlein

Masters Theses

"Phthalates are a class of SVOCs that are widely used as plasticizers and recently epidemiological and toxicological research has found a link between phthalate exposure and increased occurrences of adverse health effects. SVOCs can potentially partition into household dust and airborne particles. Models and micro chamber studies have identified that airborne particles effectively increase SVOC deposition to or emissions from surfaces; SVOCs partition to aerosols in the bulk air, the aerosols then migrate to the surfaces due to eddy and Brownian motion, and then the SVOCs is released inside the SVOC concentration boundary layer adjacent to the surface. Concentration boundary …

"The urbanization of watersheds has caused debilitating effects to downstream aquatic ecosystems in catchments and streams. The implementation of green infrastructure (GI), such as permeable pavements and bioretention facilities, has been shown to alleviate these effects by both reducing runoff and mitigating pollutants; however, the implements are often not designed with a specific goal of water improvement. This study targets understanding a small, impaired urban watershed, and the benefits green infrastructure may have to provide environmental, social, and economic improvement to the watershed.

Portions of Rolla including much of the S&T campus drain into the impaired urban waterbody Frisco Lake, …

Influence Of Mix Design Parameters On Dynamic Segregation Of Self-Consolidating Concrete And Consequences On Performance Of Precast Beams, Aida Margarita Ley Hernandez Jan 2016

Influence Of Mix Design Parameters On Dynamic Segregation Of Self-Consolidating Concrete And Consequences On Performance Of Precast Beams, Aida Margarita Ley Hernandez

Masters Theses

"Self-Consolidating Concrete (SCC) is more vulnerable to stability problems as a consequence of its high flowing ability compared to conventional vibrated concrete. Dynamic segregation refers to the tendency of the concrete constituents to separate from the suspended matrix, usually in horizontal direction while being cast into the formwork or due to an impact. Similarly to static segregation, dynamic segregation can affect the homogeneity of SCC. Therefore, it is highly essential to ensure a proper dynamic stability in order to enhance the uniformity of in-situ properties of pre-stressed beams.

In this research project, the effects of SCC mix design parameters are …

Masters Theses

"The remarkable features of ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) have been reported. Its application in bridge construction has been an active research area in recent years, attributed to its higher compressive strength, higher ductility and reduced permeability when compared with conventional concrete and even high-strength concrete. Those characteristics are known to increase bridge durability and, consequently, decrease life-cycle maintenance costs.

With that in mind, this study investigated the performance of UHPC stay-in-place (SIP) bridge deck panels subjected to high loads in both flexure and shear. The test matrix consisted of twelve (12) half-scale panels that were 4 feet long and 2 …

Shear Behavior Of Reinforced Fly Ash-Based Geopolymer Concrete, Noor S. Yacob Jan 2016

Shear Behavior Of Reinforced Fly Ash-Based Geopolymer Concrete, Noor S. Yacob

Masters Theses

"The geopolymerisation of aluminosilicate materials such as fly ash has been a radical change in construction material's chemistry and composition, compared to the portland cement-based concrete calcium silicate-hydrate chemistry. The adoption of fly ash in concrete industry is a good use of by-product ashes to reduce emissions of the greenhouse gas implicitly. However, in this research, the replacement of portland cement by fly ash is 100%, which makes it a zero-cement concrete with no proprietary chemical additives.

Geopolymer concrete (GC) is a revolutionary synthetic material that combines sustainability and high engineering properties, and it is relatively cost-effective compared to portland …

Evaluation Of Ultra-High Performance Concrete (Uhpc) In Joints Of Bridge Girders, Saipavan Rallabhandhi

Masters Theses

"Joints are often considered as the weak link in a structure and often deterioration of the structure initiates from the joints. Joints transfer the stresses from super-structure to sub-structure and in this process are subjected to large transfer stresses. Not much attention is given to the design of joints as they are positioned in low moment regions and typically a 4 to 6 ksi (28 to 41 MPa) concrete is used to fill the joints. One of the solution to this problem is Ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC). In the recent past significant research has been done to use UHPC in …
