There have been many studies that examine the negative impact of dams on freshwater mussel populations. However, recent studies suggest that some dams may create more suitable growing conditions immediately below some dams. This study’s main objectives were to 1) document where faster growth of mussels is found in relation to the Charleston Dam, 2) determine if sites with faster growth have higher recruitment and 3) investigate which water quality variable(s) could be correlated with faster growth. Brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) are a cold water ectotherm whose native distribution includes most of eastern Canada, the upper Midwestern United States, and the eastern and mid- Atlantic United States as far south as Georgia. The native range of brook trout in the United States has been reduced as a result of interspecific interactions with introduced species, and anthropogenic land use changes that drive water temperature changes in many of their native watersheds. Anthropogenic land-use changes tend to increase thermal regimes of aquatic systems, affecting brook trout physiology and limiting them to colder, headwater reaches. The threat of …

"The effect of metabolic rate (MR) on organisms' health maintenance is a long-standing puzzle and empirical data on this issue is contradictory. A theoretical model was developed for understanding animal's energy budget under the food condition of Ad libitum (AL) and food restriction. This model offers a framework for understanding the role of MR and health maintenance mechanism from the perspective of energy tradeoff between food assimilation, growth, metabolism and maintenance.
