The Archaeology Of Rockshelters On Fountain Creek, Maury County, Tennessee, Robert F. Entorf Dec 1985

The Archaeology Of Rockshelters On Fountain Creek, Maury County, Tennessee, Robert F. Entorf

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study is to describe and compare 11 archaeological assemblages recovered from six rockshelters located along Fountain Creek, a major tributary of the Duck River in Middle Tennessee. A theoretical model of forager and hunter-gatherer subsistence-settlement organization provide a framework for the evaluation of the rockshelter assemblages. The analytical and comparative procedures indicate that (1) there are significant differences in the content of contemporaneous assemblages, and (2) there is a significant increase in assemblage variability and breadth of activities represented at the rockshelters through time. It is suggested that this patterning may reflect a gradual change in …

Archaeological Testing Of The John King Site (9cam182) And The Cedar Bluff Site (9cam186), Jeanne A. Ward Dec 1985

Archaeological Testing Of The John King Site (9cam182) And The Cedar Bluff Site (9cam186), Jeanne A. Ward

Masters Theses

During the winter of 1983, archaeological testing took place at the John King and Cedar Bluff sites on the Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base, Camden County, Georgia. One by two meter units were placed evenly across the area which the site survey had identified as containing representative artifacts from the Late Archaic through early historic settlement. This thesis details the results of this investigation.

Research objectives for the Cedar Bluff Site included an investigation of shifting prehistoric cultural boundaries through time and an investigation of spatial differentiation of settlement throughout the Late Archaic occupation and other cultural phases at this …

Mississippian Architecture: Temporal, Technological, And Spatial Patterning Of Structures At The Toqua Site (40m R6), Richard R. Polhemus Dec 1985

Mississippian Architecture: Temporal, Technological, And Spatial Patterning Of Structures At The Toqua Site (40m R6), Richard R. Polhemus

Masters Theses

The description and analysis of 130 Native American structures from the Toqua site (40MR6) provide an architectural typology for determining age, form, and function of Mississippian and historic Cherokee structural remains in East Tennessee. The Toqua structure, ranging in age from circa A.D. 1200 to circa A.D. 1780, are examined for temporal, technological, and spatial patterning and are compared with 469 structures from 58 Mississippian archaeological sites in the interior Southeastern United States.

Superimposed structures and radiocarbon determinations provided a temporal sequence of structure types. Closely controlled excavations, botanical analysis of construction materials, and technological studies of building materials provided …

Turner Syndrome Dermatoglyphics: A Principal Components Analysis, Maxine J. Miller Dec 1985

Turner Syndrome Dermatoglyphics: A Principal Components Analysis, Maxine J. Miller

Masters Theses

This thesis investigates the general hypothesis that developmental stress resulting from monosomy of the X chromosome will result in changes in the dermal ridge system of the fingers and palms. The specific hypotheses proposed are that when contrasting Turner syndrome females to controls of both sexes the results will be that Turners will exhibit increased total variance in ridge counts, increased directional asymmetry, changes in growth gradients, and deviations in lateralization.

Using principal components analysis for the fingers and palms, Turners were found to exhibit increased total variance, an increased directional asymmetry on the fingers and a deviation from the …

The Prehistory Of The Birch Run Road Site, Saginaw County, Michigan, Caven P. Clark Aug 1985

The Prehistory Of The Birch Run Road Site, Saginaw County, Michigan, Caven P. Clark

Masters Theses

The Birch Run Road site (20SA393), located in the archaeologic ally complex Saginaw Valley, was partially impacted by the extension of Birch Run Road across the Flint River. In many respects typical of Saginaw Valley sites as a whole, the Birch Run Road site produced artifacts attributable to the Early Archaic, Late Archaic, Late Woodland and historic periods. The prehistoric occupations are evaluated with special attention to the context and form of lithic raw materials, and use of projectile points in determining temporal placement. The Late Woodland component, ca. A.D. 800-1100, represents the most intensive occupation of the site. Physical …

The Nature Of The British Fairies Of Medieval And Folk Literature An Annotated Bibliography 1900-1983, Constance Reik Aug 1985

The Nature Of The British Fairies Of Medieval And Folk Literature An Annotated Bibliography 1900-1983, Constance Reik

Masters Theses

This thesis fills the need for a bibliography of works on the British fairies.

It is essentially an annotated bibliography with an introduction which will help illuminate the fairies of the ancient and medieval literature (through Shakespeare) and the folk literature of Britain. The annotations are extensive are both descriptive and evaluative.

The bibliography includes publications written in English, from 1900 to 1983, which describe and discuss the characteristics and origins of the British fairies. It is divided into seven chapters: Literary Fairies, British Fairies, English Fairies, Welsh and Manx Fairies, Scottish Fairies, Irish Fairies, and Origins of Fairies.

The …

The Role Of Rockshelter Sites In Prehistoric Settlement Systems: An Example From Middle Tennessee, Charles L. Hall Aug 1985

The Role Of Rockshelter Sites In Prehistoric Settlement Systems: An Example From Middle Tennessee, Charles L. Hall

Masters Theses

It is commonly assumed by researchers that rockshelter sites functioned as limited activity sites in prehistoric settlement systems. A test of this assumption is presented which involves a rockshelter site in Middle Tennessee (Tom's Rockshelter, 40MU430). A dynamic model of settlement diversification grounded in population growth is used to derive the expectation that the character of rockshelter occupations in general became increasingly specialized through time. It is argued that an implication of this increasing specialization would be a decrease in the diversity of the material assemblages characterizing progressively later rockshelter occupations. The record of prehistoric utilization at Tom's Rockshelter is …

The Allometry Of The Palate Of Archaic Homo Sapiens And Modern Homo Sapiens, Steven R. Leigh Jun 1985

The Allometry Of The Palate Of Archaic Homo Sapiens And Modern Homo Sapiens, Steven R. Leigh

Masters Theses

This research examines several aspects of allometry in the palate of archaic Homo sapiens and modern Homo sapiens. The allometry of the modern human palate is described. Comparisons between quantitative methods and comparisons between different types of samples are undertaken. Additionally, the allometry of the archaic Homo sapiens palate is described and analyzed. Finally, allometric comparisons between these groups are made.

The samples employed in this study consist of 132 Amerindian (Arikara) crania and 21 archaic Homo sapiens (primarily Neandertal) crania. Quantitative methods used for analyzing these groups include least-squares regression, reduced major axis regression, and principal components analysis. …

Patterns Of Variation In The Permanent Maxillary Anterior Tooth Roots: A Different Approach To The Problem Of Anterior Dental Reduction During The Transition From Archaic To Modern Homo Sapiens, Steven P. Paquette Jun 1985

Patterns Of Variation In The Permanent Maxillary Anterior Tooth Roots: A Different Approach To The Problem Of Anterior Dental Reduction During The Transition From Archaic To Modern Homo Sapiens, Steven P. Paquette

Masters Theses

The following investigation centers upon an attempt to examine the problem of anterior dental reduction during the bio-cultural transition from archaic (Neandertals) to fully modern human forms. By focusing on the nature of dental root variability in the permanent maxillary anterior teeth (I1-C-), an endeavor is made to explore the absolute and relative tooth size differences characterizing the comparative samples. The samples selected for study were a collection of individual anterior teeth from an Upper Pleistocene cave deposit (Krapina, Yugoslavia) and a Plains Indian Arikara population (Larson site, South Dakota).

The research objectives of this analysis …

Cholesteatoma In A Pre-Columbian American Aborigine From The Gyftakis Site, St. Ignace, Michigan, Robert William Hull Apr 1985

Cholesteatoma In A Pre-Columbian American Aborigine From The Gyftakis Site, St. Ignace, Michigan, Robert William Hull

Masters Theses

A 25 to 30 year old American aborigine male dating from A.D. 170 + 80 years exhibits bilateral osteolytic lesions of the temporal bones. A differential diagnosis was set up to determine the cause of the pathology. It was determined that the individual had probably been subject to chronic suppurative otitis media complicated by mastoiditis, cholesteatoma, and probable lateral sinus thrombosis of the right temporal bone. Otitis media then developed within the left temporal bone causing some bone destruction, although not to the extent seen in the right temporal. It is likely that a small cholesteatoma had developed or would …
